We love The Guild! This week (and next) we enjoy a re-watch before the S3 premiere. Highlights: we express our love for the rise of web video (and the creative opportunities it opens for the talented and motivated), review the personal and professional brilliance of the Guild’s creator, actors, and crew, note that Michelle Boyd is a real life (and believable) Christmas Jones, enjoy the show’s realistic (yet positive) portrayal of MMO gamers, wonder why everyone plays a woman online, hear about Sean’s 9-1/2′ tall ogre Thimbalina, talk Lara Croft clipping issues (think boobs poking through solid rock), dream about creating a real world alt to tell off your boss, discuss player creation in various MMOs, speculate on exchange rates between various MMO cash, and generally geek out on social gaming in general!
It’s ok, too much MMO and not enough Felicia Day for my tastes.
Want more Ferris Family Theatre!!
Carry on.
Downloaded and waiting for two hours of free time to listen to it!
Ok. I finished 4 episodes of The Guild and I’m wondering how is it a “(yet positive) portrayal of MMO gamers”?
If this is positive, I’d hate to see a negative portrayal. I’m not saying my life is any better than theirs (in many ways, it’s not), but still.
Maybe I’m just weird, but these people remind me of my friends. Sure, they’re a bit exaggerated, but hey – that’s entertainment. I see a bit of Vork in myself when I’m firing up the spreadsheet to determine if level four missioning outweighs mining in ISK/hr, a bit of Clara when I IM a friend from a party to see if he wants to hop on line later, and so on. If you haven’t made it to season two, you’re missing some serious payoff.
I too once was a MMO addict (Dark Age of Camelot) so I really ‘get’ and love the guild
met some pretty cool people on there who even now 3 and a half years since I stopped playing still talk to maybe once a week, sometimes more sometimes less
Thank you for introducing many of us to “The Guild”! I’ve never gotten into MMPOG (sp?), but I burned much midnight oil playing a game called “Traveler” during undergrad…when I wasn’t in the practice room (sigh).
Felicia Day can be seen playing a very different character in the “epilogue episodes” of Dollhouse.
So, what is Joss Whedon’s level of involvement in the project?
I’m definitely relating to Clara this weekend cuz I got a whole weekend of “me time”. Better half and the kids are away on a girls weekend (with my wife’s girlfriends and their girl kids).
So I’ve been playing a game since 3 pm today, but it wasn’t online and it wasn’t with a stranger. Was at my friend’s house (friend since 2nd grade) playing an actual board game.
His German Panzer and Tiger tanks failed to defeat my Russian T-34s in the epic WWII battle of Kursk (largest tank battle in the history of history.) I didn’t win either—we each achieved a tactical victory, so I guess you’d call that a tie.
I thought it lost that title to the first gulf war no? Maybe DS was the biggest since Kursk.
I think Kursk was bigger than any tank battle in Dessert Storm in terms of number of tanks.
Those Russian cranked out those T-34s like Keelber elves makin’ cookies.
EDIT: (According to Wiki Answers:)
Q: What was the biggest tank battle?
A: The battle of Prokhorovka, which took place during the battle of kursk (which was in fact a series of battles around the kursk area.)
At the beginning of the podcast, I believe “adjectives” is the word Chuck was looking for.
Final Fantasy games have female fighters. If you’ve ever seen Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (Complete), you know how much ass Tifa can kick.
Seeing Clara, I have to ask where the heck is Child Protective Services?!!
Bladezz’s (how do you say that btw?) sister is his RL sister. Or, at least they have the same RL last name which would be a big coincidence.
Another thing about Bladezz is I thought the actor was older than the character he played. Like Xander from Buffy.
Thanks for the pointer to “Do you wanna date my avatar?”
Codex (the character, not the actress) reminds me of Willow from Buffy. They’re both timid, unconfident, and mousy. Makes me wonder whether Codex is a hot chick and a broomstick away from destroying the world. (:
Tinkerballa reminds me of Anna Wu from Chuck. Not because they are both hot, young Asian chicks (maybe a little), but more their attitudes and outlook on life.
Now, I have to find the evolution of Tomb Raider. I never played any of them.
P.S. I still disagree that this series portray MMO gamers in a positive light, but I enjoyed watching it.

In the last video there (BTW, thanks for gathering them here), Felicia mentions she’s developing a couple more web series. VERY exciting news! I can’t wait to see what she comes up with!
An interesting discussion on all things MMO and gaming. You have proven your geek cred. Really interesting Guild tidbits too. As I know everyone will go look for it, I present Laura Croft evolution
I’ll be in mamamaeyeyeye bbbbdroolbbunk
You’re welcome. There are a bunch more on YouTube, but those are ones that I watched in a short amount of time after seeing the music video.
Btw, I’m surprised the music video has over 2,130,701 views within 6 days. Must be a lot of people who are closet MMOGs or the song has more appeal than I give it credit for.
Thank you. The evolution suggests to me that her “assets” went from over-inflated to deflated then back to re-inflated. Yes, I feel silly for looking that hard at pixels. And no, I’m not going to make a “I can tell it’s photoshopped by the pixels” reference. d:
Audra- if you like the idea of Tomb Raider, minus the extreme boobage, you should definitly check out the Prince of Persia series of games. Same sort of gameplay, but in ancient Persia. Also has a lot of fantasy elements.
I haven’t listened to the cast yet, but I watched season 1 of The Guild this morning and feel like such a moron for not having seen it sooner. Laughed my head off. I especially like the mom who ignores her kids. Her character really spoke to me. Reminds me of when I’m on the forum and I won’t deal with anyone live in the house.
