Today we finish up our Transformers primer, heading into the 1986 movie next. Highlights: we discuss new-Transformer acting prowess, place GoBots and RoboTech (including one special crossover) in context, wonder about Daniel’s mother, point out that Transformers do age, get into Arcee and Elita One specifics (and lack of Madonna cones), talk Transformer sex (yes, it happens) and (technical) Disney bestiality, and catch up on Mass Effect news (a new trailer and iPhone app).
Way to wrap up the primer, Sean, Chuck and Audra. While I’ve always thought the Transformers canon was too contaminated by being too heavily influenced by the toy marketing and the the target demographic (kids) to be taken seriously as science fiction, I did enjoy both podcasts. You successfully cleaved off the bad and explained the good as far as I’m concerned.
Happy Anniversary Sean!! Congrats! Hope you and your wife have a great one!
That part makes me a happy panda. Can’t wait to hear what you guys & gal have to say about it.
As for the 1986 Transformers, will you be reviewing the original theatrical release (the one with a few curse words ) or the more parent friendly version??? :p:D
And Happy Anniversary Sean.
We’re watching the original theatrical version – with the one curse word – though I suppose most would get the gist from a censored version.
heheheheheheh…you said, “gist”
Great podcast, really enjoyed it and laughed out loud several times. Brilliant.
I kid, I kid!!!
I’ll have to go snag a copy. I last saw it when I was 12 (back in 86’) I thought there were a couple (I remember Spike’s s-bomb but I thought there were a couple more). I remember I saw it in the theater about 7 times during its run and on the 7th the ‘bad words’ had been edited out along with a couple other scenes. My friend and I were like “what the hell”.
Hey just an FYI for anyone to catch up on some TF tv shows

The Jetfire (or as I know him, Skyfire) is partially explained here:

By the way, the Transformers wiki is pretty awesome, and does not take itself too seriously.
great, great work as usual, guys
but
i got a bit irrated by the dismissal of the Megan Fox character as useless…I think she is serve a purpose as both her own character (the tow truck scene) and as motivation (and yes…reward)for Sam to act.
after all…why does he want a car?..to get girls. The car is nothing in itself. it is a means to an end.
and Megan’s character is smart…sexy…tough…she is mechanically inclined…she’s actually rather proactive in this movie , unlike Sam who needs others to move him along and save him . and after she grows up a bit throught the movie…she learns to see past appearence and find a great guy in Sam.
i am sorry to say i believe her appearence is what i think most people have against her. Because she begins the movie as eye-candy, she gets dismissed as such. But folks…movies…visual art…so eye-candy is par for the course.
so…sorry about the rant…but useless…i am sorry…but nope
Guys, Shirley Manson is not English and she wasn’t playing Irish in T:TSCC, she’s Scottish.
heh its podcast 169
Thanks for all the great information on the Transformers. I remember watching the cartoon back in the '80 with my nephew when I babysat while my sis and b-in-law worked Saturday mornings. Of course after watching we had to play Transformers or He-Man…I always had to be the bad guy Megatron or Skeletor.
Belated Happy Anniversary to Sean and Shannon!
Chuck you’re brilliant. Yes, WallE is definitely a (G-rated) Woody Allen homage. The awkward nerdy schleb who is obviously outclassed in every way by the object of his affections, yet wins her out in the end.
Okay, back to listening…
where’s the tinkerbell discussion?
chill, dude. I know my friend Sean. He did whisper to Audra that she was Scottish. :D:cool: You’d just have to tune up the volume at that part.
In the Straight to the Gutter Thread… here is the specific post
The entire time i was watching UP i was thinking how much Sean would love Dug.
Here’s the MLP video Audra mentioned.
I was looking for the dinobots video that was mentioned, but hell, just look in the previous show thread. Instead, here’s the creator of that video providing the voice for Optimus in an awesome G4 promo.
Totally agree–she didn’t mess up the robot movie at alll, she added to it…in my opinion
And that is why I, as a girl, did not like her character very much. She’s a prize instead of (IMO) a fully realized character. I like strong, smart, tough female characters and she did not do a thing for me. She’s a plot point and a reward for the male lead instead of a fully-fledged character. “Useless” is much too strong of a word for my opinion about her… “Embodiment of my annoyance with the Hollywood system” is more accurate. I’m hoping that the second movie improves on this, but the gratuitous butt-shot in the trailer didn’t help my opinion any.
I demand gratuitous butt-shots of Tyrese Gibson in return! Fair is fair.
Also, girl giant fighting robots = a huge step in equality. Even if she is pink.
EDIT: Okay, after a little thinking I am being kinda harsh on her character in the movie. I blame it on still being annoyed that the character made the top ten list of female sci-fi characters and Aeryn Sun from Farscape was nowhere. I like the character while I’m watching the movie, it’s just afterwards when I think about it that I get rubbed the wrong way, does that make sense?
