Yeah, mine was The Abyss when I was young. This Xmas the same thing happened with Slumdog Millionaire, but now I’m too old and couldn’t take it. Had to trade in the ticket for a later show…
I for one, like the Spock and uhura relationship. I vaguely remember teh occasional episode where Spock and Uhura had a little chemistry…nothing at all overt and could be completely glossed over. Liek Audra, I’d liek ot think that Abrms saw that and just played it up.
But Kirk…I dunno. Kirk and Uhura kinda reminded me of Han and Liea in ANH and the first fwe minutes of ESB. The moreshe resisted him…just made em wonder.
Kirk with a Boston accent? That definitely hasn’t been done before!
KHAAAAAAAHHHHN!
Baltar
And from the move we can tell that he clearly liked 'dem apples…
Jimmy Kirk!
Baltar??? You’re sounding like an outtah townah to me!
I don’t know if this has been posted elsewhere, but there’s a very sweet (and interesting in light of some of the discussions around here as late) piece on the influence that Trek has had on people’s lives in individual terms: link
Oops! Of course I meant “Baltah”. He’s pahked in the backyahd, came in on a raptah.
South Boston Jimmy Kirk says, “Khaaaan, ya [frakkin’] wicked prick, ya!”
“Mistah Spahk, ya greenah than a St Paddy’s Day float, ya bastahd!”
“Khaaan! Yer a bum!”
You’re right! The same logic goes for Lord of the Rings and every fantasy story that came after
That’s a beautiful article. Annalee hits another one out of the park.
Thanks for posting!
Loving the podcast, and loved the new movie. I absolutley LOVE the “reboot.” Once it was established that the movie wasn’t about setting the time line right, it was like I could just relax and get into the story, not having to deal with continuity, or all of my preconceived Trek expectations.
I would totally have to agree with those who were disappointed with the Uhura role. I’ve since read a bunch of feminist takes on the gender roles portrayed in the new movie, and all I have to say is it has really made me appreciate on a totally new level how amazing BSG was in that respect. RDM was talking in his last podcast about the language that would be used in a gender neutral society keeping the show true to that, and it really made me realize on a deeper level that equality and opportunity based on gender is about a lot more than what positions are open to a person (double entendre intended). As Spock would say, fascinating.
On a side note, will NOT being seeing this movie in IMAX any time in my lifetime. I walked out of the theatre dizzy and slightly nauseous - the shaky way a lot of the action scenes were filmed really got to me, and I usually don’t have that reaction to movies, even sitting in the front row. Not hating on it at all, but maybe they should have had some perimenapausal women on HRT in their early test screenings I’m sure it will be fine on DVD.
And um, Bana…I’m sorry, I just couldn’t A) stop looking at him as Henry VIII and B) couldn’t stop wishing his shirt would just fall off…
Question about Bana. We just watched The Other Bolyn Girl about a week back. IS he wearing a “fat suit” Lee adama style or is his face really that round. I tried for the first half of the movie to convince the gf that was the same guy that was playing Henery and she wasn’t seeing it. I mean he didn’t look fat… just bigger than the Hulk or Henery. I wasn’t sure if that was makeup or what?
I can’t find any references to how he “gained weight” or 'bulked up" or was made to look different. Maybe the director did it with skill and lets not forget how small Scarlett Johansson is and Eric is 6’3" .
I meant Bana as Nero. I was uesing TOBG as a recent referance.
His face look unusualy plump in the face closeups as Nero. Round, and double chinned. I am not makeing a vain judgment call on his looks or anything… we had just watched that movie and the GF wouldn’t believe that he was the same person. I thought that was romulan makeup. But if it was… it was a perfect match for his skin. ( pores and all) I mean damn good match. Makeing him the best peace of Romulan makeup I have ever seen.
Yeah, in TOBG he looked like a giant next to Portman and Johanson.
Mister-aaaah Sulu, Paaaaahhk the Enta-proyise in eeerrr-ahhh, standahd orbit
OH! And I forgot one of my favorite aspects of the new Trek: Charlie Bartlett as Chekhov!!! OMG how frakking great is that - and to top it off, he actually IS russian - born and bred.
