GWC Podcast #163: Star Trek IX: Insurrection

I can understand you guys remembering Julie Newmar, but how do you forget Lee Meriweather and Eartha Ktt???

Welcome, Bedlam!

Cue deep voice: “On a previous GWC post, the Women of the Batverse Poll…”

Ms. Kitt deserves some votes. She’s smokin’, I just have a thing for Batgirl.

We keep looking for blown-out explanations of how Worf could’ve appeared on the Enterprise and how the Enterprise wasn’t directly involved in Dominion combat during Insurrection, but I think we keep missing the obvious ones:

[ol]
[li]We see about 24 hours of DS9 happenings during the entire seventh year during the war. Any number of things could’ve taken place during that time, including Worf leaving the station for a week.[/li][li]I can think of numerous reasons Worf could have taken the Defiant somewhere during the war for administrative purposes.[/li][li]Even during the war everyone wasn’t actively in space battles every moment of the day for years. The Federation continued to push papers and initiate first contact with various species during the war. In fact, Picard mentions the reason for this in Insurrection – in light of the war, the Federation “needs the doodz.” </Animal House>[/li][/ol]
I’m sure you can think of others as well. C’mon, everyone! It’s easy to poke holes in a fictional story. At some point, it’s all made up.

Though admittedly, I get a kick out of coming up with even more random ways for Worf to show up. Maybe I’ll Tweet a few.

agreed! like:

 1. Worf tookt eh keys tot he Defiant while Sisko wasnt looking (someone is getting grounded)

 2. Worf was on this way to a Dominon battle when he realized he “should’ve taken that left turn at Aluquerque” (it all goes back to Bugs Bunny)

 3. Needed a shave and knew Deanna was on board (giggedy)

The obvious answer is that as second in command of the Defiant, Starfleet could have ordered Worf to come assist in the battle and order Sisko to stay at DS9 because of the Dominion hostilities. Being that the Defiant was supposed to be designed to combat the Borg.

OR - they were out of Prune juice on DS9…warriors drink:D

I didn’t watch DS9, so I don’t know what Wharf’s dating status was, but maybe he had a girlfriend on the Enterprise? Some non-player character.

Even if he didn’t, maybe he was like that guy in college who graduated, but was still around all the time?

Jewfro is a perfectly acceptable description for said hair style. This Jew approves

Thread dedicated to this topic can be found here

Of course we know duct tape was integral to SW because it is in fact the Force:

There’s a light side and a dark side and it binds the universe together.

Yes it’s an oldie, but it’s a goodie nontheless…

Funny thing is that I consulted The GF on my Batgirl vote, and she (and, thus, I) went with Newmar, even though The GF looks a bit like Kitt.

Weyoun talks about the Sona as Dominion allies right after this event as soon as season 7 starts in ds9. So It happens between seasons 6 and 7.

As for The Enterprise in the Domminion War: I have been screaming this for years!!!
I realize that they couldn’t have TNG crew step all over the DS9 crew, But they could have at least refreenced that "the enterprise and the 4th fleet are attemting to retake Betazed, or said “the Enterprise has just retaken Vulcan”. That would have been ok with me. It is the flagship of the federation. That’s just bad oversite on the part of the Paramount Trek staff. Enterprise got better about doing these little things later on. Voyager did refrance the Dominion war when the Maquis all find out that the Jem’hadar Killed all the Maquis. So they think about the Dominion war in Voyager… no nod for the FLAGSHIP of the federation.

The non-cannon books have the Enterprise hanging back as a problem splver, hole filler, reserve starhip. In the Domminion War short story book, they have the Enterprise defend earth and fight off the breen attack. All this is non-cannon of course.

I heard, a few years back, that there was a line in Insurrection, when the admiral was giving Picard the speech about why they were doing this to the Baku… that the Dominion war was going poorly and they NEEDED the baku world to save the Federation from destrucction.I hear that the editing process got rid of the line because he didn’t understand the significance, as he wasn’t familure with ds9’s plot. I heard this from a “know it all” at a con. So take it as you will. If you watch the scene… you can kinda get that feeling thou. Might have been the truth.

If it was during season 7, his wife had died less than a year ago.

What a nice surprise after the Outtro at the end of the podcast! The Manhattan Transfer would be rolling over in their graves… er, if they were dead.

Now, if you’d segued from conn to con to Khan to Cannes to Sammy Cahn, then I’d have been impressed. (Oh, he’s got high hopes, high apple-pie-in-the-sky hopes…)

How’s this for a young Demi Moore?

And here are those oh-so-attractive TOS spacesuits:

Oh, and in the DS9 episode Far Beyond the Stars, Benny wasn’t a journalist, he was a sci-fi writer. And yep, Marc Alaimo is pretty scary lookin’:

Yes, Audra, there is a company called Sona that makes furniture.

And in the DS9 episode “The Reckoning,” Kira was possessed by a Prophet and Jake by a Pagh-Wraith (named Kosst Amojan, no less).

And Chuck, I didn’t “myth” your Skeeve reference! I really enjoyed those books when I was about fifteen, but I tried to reread them a few years ago, and just found them silly. Thieves’ World is better…

Nope. And no reference to the experience afterwards, either.

I thought (and I’m putting it in spoiler tags for those who haven’t seen the series)
Jadzia died at the END of season 7, and she and Worf were married in season 6… so he just ran off? Is Jadzia just hanging around Risa?
Or I could be misremembering.

that’s the irony. Jadzia dies… and so immediatly (or a few weeks later) he goes off to participate in Insurection. ( this time period is established by stardate and by mention in ds9 season 7) No mention, No nod, or anything about Jadzia. He isn’t any way changed (as he is in DS9, He is just worried about his zit.

And in nemisis, no depression ( while attending the Riker wedding ) over him haveing been married. ( and by the way we never see any mention from THIS TNG crew of a “I’m sorry for your loss” kinda thing in ds9 or TNG movies.

I harp on this subject EVERY time a discussion about worf and these last 2 movies comes up. These movies are written by ( and for) guys who don’t watch Trek.

Okay, but did you say " went with Newmar, even though you look a bit like Kitt." out loud?
If so, I predict you’ll be sleeping on the couch tonight.

Do Klingons get depressed?

He sure did on DS9.

No,
She died end of season 6. Season 7 was the last season and had Ezri Dax instead.
