GWC Podcast #163: Star Trek IX: Insurrection

Yeah, it’s been a while since I watched that episode, but I think that was Tom’s dad.

The admiral who made the deal with Julian’s parents to let him keep serving in Starfleet wasn’t too bad.

Oh, and here’s a little easter egg I found when I was looking at admirals on the Star Trek Wiki (Memory Alpha) Vice Admiral Ronald D Moore

Okay here’s a memory lane question for you 40-something GWCers.

How many of you remember when Friday (Saturday?) nights meant:
(I may the the other two mixed up, but B-Bunch and P-Family I remember distinctly).

8:00 The Brady Bunch
8:30 The Partridge Family
9:00 Love Ameican Style
9:30 The Odd Couple

Brent Spiner was pushed by Levar Burton to get on twitter. I think this started only a few months ago. Brent did not twit much but Levar did. Now it is the other way around. Maybe Brent is just trying to out tweet Levar.

frakkin good pull…frakkn

can totally pick her out in a crowd:D

Thanks for catching that - I kept puzzling to myself, where do I know him from? :stuck_out_tongue:

The real question - did he speak at all?

raises hand

Loooove American Styyyyylle! It’s yooo and meeeeee!

He was also in one of my favorite chick-flicks, While You Were Sleeping! The intern with the box of personal stuff he tried to give to Sandra Bullock.

Yeah, he has one line I think. That’s what made me recognize him more then the face.

Awesome.
Love, American Style,
Truer than the Red, White and Blue.
Love, American Style,
That’s me and you.

When our kids reach our age they won’t be able look but on shared experiences like that (as you and I just now did).

Back then there were only so many TV stations, so pretty much, on Friday night, that’s what we’d all be watching.

I had to mention this about the Borg and the species they’ve assimilated.

They HAVE assimilated Ferengi before, as illustrated in the Voyager episode “Infinite Regress”. Seven’s exposure to a synthetic pathogen triggered personalities of people who’ve been assimilated, in essence giving her a severe case of multiple personality disorder.

One of the personalities she assumed was that of Daimon Torrot.

The one problem I have with Insurrection, is in this film The Federation is in the middle of the Dominion War, Whole star systems are falling to The Founders and what is the best, most powerful ship with its most experienced captain doing, launching daring strikes against Cardassia?, leading a strike force to retake Betazed, no he is being a diplomat and trying to save the fountain of Youth. Pathetic

Re: women’s underwear in space, this is one place that Star Trek and Star Wars are in agreement :stuck_out_tongue: Carrie Fisher’s boobs were duct-taped in ANH after George Lucas told her that there was no lingerie in space.

I totally agree with your timeline assessment. As far as I can tell, Insurrection took place sometime around stardate 52200, which places it squarely in the middle of DS9 season seven. But Picard does offer an explanation: clearly Starfleet had lost some trust in him after his Borg experience, and they were keeping him out of “harm’s way” as much as possible. Or an even better explanation is that the events of Insurrection only occupied about 48-72 hours. Who’d give their all for a captain who wouldn’t take a day or two to come save your ass?

Now if it happened after the Breen attack on Earth (sometime between 52576 and 52645, I believe), I’d imagine that Picard taking a 48-hour sabbatical would seem more unrealistic. But clearly the events of Insurrection took place prior to this.

In-universe speculation aside, I’d guess the real reason for this is that a) Insurrection released in 1998, whereas season seven of DS9 didn’t air until early 1999, and DS9 was sort of nailed down timeline-wise to the events of Wolf 359 making it difficult to adjust to compensate for the movie. Besides the fact that I’d imagine none of the TNG crew was available for 'Trek TV work at the time, it also likely wouldn’t have made sense to have the TNG crew rush in to rescue the DS9 crew – though there’s no reason not to imagine that the new Enterprise didn’t see some off-screen combat in the war, maybe even participating in some of those large battles.

But apparently there’s duct tape in space – and many uncomfortable women.

T-shirt opportunity.

My favorite game to play in the TNG movies is: “How do we sneak Worf on board this time?” In one I meant to rewind and catch it, but I think it was pretty lame like they have given up on making an elaborate way of finding him back on board.

“Sir, I happened to be in the area and thot I would say hi. No, I don’t need to get back to my duties on DS9…I’ll hang out with you about 2 hours in cinema time and then get back. No problem.”

DS9 folks, do they ever nod to the fact that Worf takes off every once in a while for no apparent reason to go Star Trekking with his old crüe?

Of course there’s duct tape in space! It’s the unspoken second most plentiful object in the universe next to hydrogen atoms. How else do you think molecules and spaceships are held together?

that was the big thing that bugged me in Insurrection. the “Worf! What the hell are you doing here?” moment. I was like “yeah, Worf, what the hell ARE you doing there? Isn;t there a war on?”

And no - don’t think DS9 ever mentioned that fact that Worf taeks the Defiant on joyrides, or any mention of the old crew.

I think they mentioned the Defiant being under repair around the time they switched to the new uniforms, but I don’t remember for sure.

And they wouldn’t need to have many of the DS9 cast besides Worf. Maybe just a cameo from Sisko at a mission briefing for whatever mission at the beginning of the movie to explain Worf’s presence on the Enterprise or something.

They had pretty easy reasons for him to be there in First Contact and Nemesis (the wedding), but it seems like they didn’t even try for Insurrection.
