GWC Podcast #162: Star Trek VIII: First Contact

The EMH has a bedside manner better than Bones? Bite your tongues! Check out McCoy’s little pep talk to Joe Tormolen in “The Naked Time”… his sympathy to Scotty at Peter Preston’s death in ST II… and, granted Kirk is his close personal friend, but I can’t imagine the Doctor ever delivering a speech like McCoy does in “Balance of Terror” (…“don’t destroy the one named Kirk”). C’mon, fellow Bones fans, help me out – what examples am I forgetting?

And the Doctor’s “life on another planet” episode would’ve been more impressive if TNG hadn’t already done it with “The Inner Light.”

and cinco de mayo is not too far away!! ole!

Mentioning Yesterday’s Enterprise and Generations in the same podcast reminds me of the fact that the scene from the movie where the warp core is about to go critical is written and blocked nearly identically from the episode. Steam bursts from a pipe, Geordi yell’s “Coolant Leak!”, opens the same panel, then says the core is going to blow there’s nothing he can do. I chose to view this as evidence of the writers’ dedication to continuity…

I haven’t listened to this whole podcast yet. They mention “Yesterday’s Enterprise”? Cool.
Chuck (and Solai and Pike) starred in that episode I believe ;):

The Borg also assimilate holidays! What if assimilation were more like a workplace negotiation?

“Resistance is futile! No, you will not retain your paid vacation days. But you will integrate into a work schedule that combines holidays from millions of cultures.”

The Borg always scared the shite out of me, but the “resistance is futile” line always made me think of Vogons.

I dunno… it seems to me that the Borg probably planned the time travel plan all along. The cube assault was a diversion, perhaps, from the real plot: remember, that sphere that goes back in time almost goes unnoticed amidst all the fracas. Maybe they didn’t send two ships back because they thought they were unstoppable. Doesn’t Data say something about the Borg becoming arrogant?

You are all forgetting that Picard “flips” over that woman in the episode “Liaisons” that he shares flute lessons with (no, that’s not a euphemism… though it could be, I guess… flute lessons in the Jeffries tube…)

Yes, thinking of the Borg assimilating the Keys and unmotivated types… Jimmy Buffett brought into the Borg collective would help matters certainly. Then again I’ve been to a couple of concerts and they do form somewhat of a Buffett Parrot Head Collective.

The episode with the terrorist kidnapping Beverly is The High Ground. It is also one of my top 10 favorites, and shows an example of ST not ending in a happy resolution. If I remember correctly it had to be edited for UK broadcast because in discussing successful terrorist movements Data refers to the Irish reunification of 2026 (or something). That didn’t play very well there…

Introducing the Vulcan survey ship VULVA.

Ahem, I stand corrected.

You are so going to hell.

I REALLY don’t understand how you could post something like that without first supplying me with something to wipe the coffee of my computer screen.
You totally made me spittake a half a cup of coffee all over my screen.

This is good GWC rules reminder.
Rule 1: Chuck is always right.
Rule 2: If Chuck is found not to be right we will retcon to make him right.

Stop spaming the pic damnit!!!

What, like this?

lowers my head
Damnit Audra…

You know, until I listened to this podcast I didn’t know that the movie with the Borg and the one with Farmer Hoggett from Babe were the same movie. Then again, the last time I saw First Contact, it was new in the theaters and I knew jack-all about Star Trek.

I really need to watch these movies again now that I know something about the universe other than “OH GOD EAR WORMS NOOO.”

Eeh…when you’ve seen one Uterus you’ve seen them all.

I hate you guys…

Dear Audra,
I feel bad that there wasn’t any opportunity to do a Junk Report for this movie.
So, here’s something to help you keep your reporting skills well-honed.
(The measurement is 11.0 cm, by the way)

Given the diversity in nature, you have the opportunity to design a whole fleet of Vulcan ships…
