GWC Podcast #162: Star Trek VIII: First Contact

I must of missed a few Enterprise.

Ahhh, Lt. Marlena Moreau.

Love Naughty Hoshi.

Uhura! Work it girl!

You can see her (well, the actress) again in Star Trek New Voyages episode “In Harm’s Way.” She’s still a knockout.

Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken
Drei Ecken hat mein Hut,
Und hätt’ er nicht drei Ecken
So wär’ er nicht mein Hut!

My hat it has three corners
three corners has my hat
and if it didn’t have three corners
it wouldn’t be my hat!

Welcome aboard, blergh!

The damndest things will cause people to post for the first time…

Given their description, I figured her name would be Flo.

You know Audra, I never noticed the poofiness. But now that you mention it.

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became the slave of my hair

Fresh Prince. Close. Actually it’s Play’s from Kid-n-Play.

OK, fine. YOU come up with a Kid-n-Play riff…

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Holy crap, I’ll be in MY bunk…

Seriously, though, Sean needs to get caught up!

Thanks blergh! And welcome to the forum!

Chuck and I used to go to a German biergarten/restaurant sometimes and the guy on the accordion played this song- we used to joke about the lyrics being something like “Mein hund der hat drei augen” which I think is “My dog has three tails.” Which, of course, we switched to “balls.” Hehehe.

Hmmm…I’d forgotten how many times James Cromwell has been on Star Trek;

IMDB says:

“Enterprise” … Dr. Zefram Cochrane (1 episode, 2001)

… aka “Star Trek: Enterprise” (USA: new title)
- Broken Bow: Part 1 (2001) TV episode (uncredited) … Dr. Zefram Cochrane

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” … Hanok (1 episode, 1995)
… aka “DS9” (USA: promotional abbreviation)
… aka “Deep Space Nine” (USA: short title)
… aka “Star Trek: DS9” (USA: short title)
- Starship Down (1995) TV episode … Hanok

“Star Trek: The Next Generation” … Jaglom Shrek / … (3 episodes, 1990-1993)
… aka “Star Trek: TNG” (USA: promotional abbreviation)
- Birthright: Part 2 (1993) TV episode … Jaglom Shrek
- Birthright: Part 1 (1993) TV episode … Jaglom Shrek
- The Hunted (1990) TV episode … Prime Minister Nayrok

EDIT (added picture)

Chuck just to flesh out the points in you podcast. When Liliy states

You broke your little ships.
the ship the film concentrates on is the Enterprise D, and mirrors its destruction in Generations.

I always thought that it reminded him that sometimes it was sacrificed to save him and thats why he changes his mind.

Also Alice Krieg who played the Borg Queen in First Contact also played the Borg Queen in Star Trek: Voyager except for the two parter Dark Frontier where she is played by Susanna Thompson due to Alice Krieg’s commitment to another project.

Of course, for us older Treksperts, this is what Zephream Cochrane REALLY looks like

Susanna Thompson!! I knew she looked familiar.
She plays in the Queen in the new TV series Kings.

frak! I can’t believe Sean actually called his dad in the show!

Now, if only they could have a 'cast show with MRS Sean & Mama Cage…
they’re such nice boys… heheheheh… :stuck_out_tongue:

I was especially worried when they got the answering machine. I thought we were headed for a Russell Brand moment…

Random points from first 45 minutes of 'cast:

  1. The Back to the Future/Starfleet Academy scenario had me cracking up. Because it deserves all the exposure it can get, here’s The Biff Questions Song:

//youtu.be/v/iwY5o2fsG7Y&hl=en&fs=1

  1. I just caught You Don’t Mess With the Zohan on cable yesterday. The Hair Repor(t) made me think of the hairstyle books.

  2. Maybe the Borg Queen is more a program than one specific configuration of hardware. So there can be many copies.

  3. Early 90s Saturday Night Live reference: The evolution of Data’s thoughts on the Borg over First Contact, after meeting the Borg Queen and getting touch-sensitive skin.

Not at all interested in betraying the Enterprise crew for the Borg Queen.

Not interested.

Suddenly very interested.

VERY interested, fully on board.

Suddenly, not interested.

  1. Tangent from “German drinking songs”: Hot Dog: The Movie is on FLIX this month.

“Not on zis side, not on zis side, but right in ze middle!”

For my money, it might be the second-best 1980s sex comedy, after Hardbodies. Maybe third after Porky’s, which featured Kim “Valeris” Catrall, behaving in a most un-Vulcan-like fashion.

As I recall, Seven of Nine says on some episode of “Voyager” that certain species were deemed unworthy of assimilation. Maybe the Ferengi were one of those, I forget. In a short story in one of the Strange New Worlds volumes, a tribble gets assimilated. It’s a funny story. (One of them also has a fantastic “origin story” for the Borg and their Queen.)

On whether the Borg Collective grows only by assimiliation: remember that baby Borg we see in “Q Who?,” the Borg’s very first appearance? Do you think that was a kidnapped baby from some humanesque species, or do the Borg sometimes reproduce as we know it?

Always wondered. One of many things about the Borg never resolved, to my knowledge.

The Borg Queen was not hot, but was interesting, even though her introduction as a character marks the beginning of the end of the Borg as uber-scary bad guys for Trek. Actually, maybe “Hugh” did that, too. It was probably too hard a concept to sustain in its original form, although I wish they had tried a bit more.

Kid’s more than hair and a smile!

Come back to bed Harry.

Harry?
