GWC Podcast #162: Star Trek VIII: First Contact

We’re in the end run of our Trek arc leading up to the new movie! Highlights: we note the fact that LeVar Burton seems to get more buff as he ages, debate the hotness (and moistness) of the Borg Queen, discuss Picard’s newer, kinder way of jacking mercilessly with the timeline, wonder what happens when the Borg add the distinctiveness of lazy-asses to their own, suggest that maybe Lily should’ve landed a little more credit for actually building humanity’s first warp ship, and call Sean’s father for some midnight Trek advice.

The Christopher Walken movie we couldn’t remember last night was of course Brainstorm.

My bad, I never can remember that one.

HHHAAAA HAAAAA, first comment!

“Hello father this is your eldest son”
Bwhahahaaa!!!

I love the TNG. And I dig the movie overall, but here’s my gripes with…

  1. TNG movies: I haven’t watched them many times each, but the TNG movies, the cast chemistry seems markedly less pronounced – especially after the OG movies. It’s not bad, mind you. But where the original cast had tangible chemistry, the Next Gen movies have waaaay too many exchanges of knowing smiles.

That’s probably the director’s fault, not the cast’s.

And maybe there really aren’t that many knowing smiles. But it sure seems like a lot. Maybe that would make a good drinking game.

  1. The Borg Queen. It bugs me when series/shows Try Hard To Have It Both Ways. After presenting the Borg as The Scariest Bad[SorryBarb]s ever and as a monstrous, faceless collective… now we have Queen Borg.

Tangent from there: It bugged me how Voyager series was set up to have all-new stuff. But as soon as they were pressed for ideas… “Uh, better bring back the Borg!”

It’s sorry chuck now damnit!

And to think I was almost going to defend your (admittedly slightly hateful) anti-hate rant in this podcast. Oh well.

Which one? The one I called in and made a fool of myself or the recent X-men one?
:stuck_out_tongue:

I didn’t notice them my first fiew viewings, because like Chuck said, they’re all grey, but I did spot some klingon borg in First Contact, and unless I’m mistaken, I’m pretty sure we see a Cardassian at some point too.

Correction: Sorry[Chuck]. Didn’t listen to the cast yet.

To offset my minor griping, here’s some random stuff I did like:

  • Deanna drunk = funny.

  • Overall pacing: They get right into the action.

  • Whathisface, the new guy on CIC – sorry, the Bridge – who’s had so many shots in TV and film. One day, I hope he gets some kind of breakout role.

  • Lily, and how the smart black woman is the forgotten historical figure behind The White Guy; I don’t like that part as such, but it certainly rings true.

  • Zephram Cochrane (sp?) and his personal arc (reality vs. myth): good.

  • 27-minute opening credit sequence

Here’s the Wiki rundown of how the story took shape. It’s Wiki, so take it how you will, but it has sources, too:

One early idea was the Borg travelling back to Renaissance times and holing up in a castle dungeon, while the crew had swashbuckling adventures.

I think the Borg queen was using the word ‘organic’ the way say an artist or an architect uses it, meaning natural or in harmony with nature. Which is interesting because although the collective is made up of organic/biological life forms, as a whole it is anything but natural or in harmony with nature.

I love this movie. It’s just so much fun. You guys are right, Frakes had just the right touch on this one. I think the reason is 2 fold. 1) He’s a talented director 2) his familiarity with the setting.

Thank you guys for doing this…I have not really watched any Trek in quite some time. TNG was really my formal intorduction into the world of Trek. It was always on when I was growing up, but I always changed the channel, it always looked weird to me. shrug TNG was also my formal introduction into the world of “fandom”. I went to my first convention because of this show. I was absolutely obsessed with it for the reasons mentioned in the 'cast. This is a world of hope, something to strive for & a world I would love to live in for it’s diversity & acceptance. So again, thanks, I had forgotten just how much I love TNG…

Hey Audra, Shirly Manson was on Termintaor Sarah Conner this season.

Someone hasn’t been watching!

As I remember it Vulcan’s and Romulans are both the same physically generations back but split over political / emotional reasons.

TNG was definitely my introduction to Star Trek, and really, my first sci fi TV show. Probably my introduction to Sci Fi as a whole genre. So while this movie isn’t my favourite one of ST movies (or that, I prefer the TNG as a show rather than as movies on the whole), it sure is a lot of fun rewatching this again. I didn’t remember it to be so goofy and hilarious the first time around. I am a bit biased when it comes to TNG though. I’m actually named after a character on the show.

But, perhaps I should shut up already. After all, I’m probably one of the few people in the forums that have no love for Star Wars. I get why it’s so popular, and I like some of the themes carried throughout the movies, but I loathe Lucas. I hope that doesn’t mean I’m offending you guys in any way.

Or Sean. Man, I have trouble understanding the whole cosplay genre of things. There’s just something upsetting about seeing grown women dress up like little girls.

The name of the actor who played Devon in the original Knight Rider series was Edward Mulhare.

LOL another awesome podcast guys.

Sean, BE WHERE YOU’RE AT! (ahahaha sorry for calling you out there buddy)

Good going.

Now they are quoting Red October. You have to watch a lot of movies to keep up with the quotes.

Sean I remember the TNG episode you were talking about.

If you click on LeVar Burton’s avatar from his twitter page, it actually blows up to a HUGE version of the photo. His tattoo reads “Levar” if read from one direction, and if turned upside down reads “Kunta.”

After literally, minutes, of hard work, I present:
Sandy - the Borg Queen:

Based on a sketch I drew on a post it note while listening to the podcast.

Great cast as usual…

Tho I am surprised that Sean is not up on that which is DS9…How could you not watch a show with this…

I mean…come on, man!!!

Which got me thinking about mirrior universe girls…they tend to be somewhat more…open to new experiences…as evidenced below…
