Think Occupied France during WWII.With the Cylons as the Germans.
Exactly. The show is so seldom discussed in the context of holocaust lit and occupation lit. And I’m not saying it’s Night or anything, but it totally holds its own. Certainly more than any other serial TV drama I can think of.
New. Worst. Image. Ever. Welcome aboard, BPie. You’re already fitting in just fine.
Don’t know what the origin of “Baconpie” is, but if it’s fairly obvious, it’s a great idea. I spent most of Super Bowl Sunday lobbying for a bacon buffet – as opposed to taking all the bacon and mixing it u p with other foods.
I believe the reference was from “A Mighty Wind”.
The same minds made both very funny movies though.
perryostrin and ATGreat - I wish I could remember what it was! But I tend to reference both of them as much as possible.
Even before the Cylons showed up the governmental situation looked pretty grim. Baltar pretty much hung-out in his office with a gaggle of groupies (the precursors to the Balcubines, I guess) oblivious to much going on outside. The Chief had become the head of a labor movement as was about to organize a generalized strike do to the poor working conditions on the NC. I don’t remember the Q12 being mentioned directly, so apparently they were still weak even in the absence of any leadership from Baltar as well.
That’s an interesting question concerning what type of government would develop had the Colonials remained undiscovered on NC. It appeared that they were pretty close to splintering and may have devolved into some form of chiefdoms. Nothing refocuses the attention better than an occupying army though…
Thanks for the added info Phil and Old Timer.
So, establishing a functional democracy is hard work.
Not exactly a rebuttal against ‘You’re either democratic or your not’, but it seems New Caprica illustrates the difficulties involved.
Makes it appear even less likely to me that Adama/Roslyn should be damned for not providing a finely tuned democratic environment.
Having said that, I’m still betting communication to the fleet was an after thought at best. If they chose to share information with the fleet, I’m sure it would have led to some dissent, but keeping people in the dark for an extended length of time is almost guaranteed to cause an uprising.
No matter, can’t rewrite BSG history.
Two hours to go…
A functional democracy is pretty much impossible. None of them created on our planet have ever lasted and a democracy really winds up being just a transitional government to one of the only two legitimate forms of government, Republic and Dictatorship.
A democracy is not a republic and a republic is not a democracy.
People interchange those two but they are truly two distinct animals.

As one of the people disputing the discussion of law here on the forum - I just wanted to clarify. I’ve never argued (and I don’t know that anyone has) that the Colonies had no laws, but rather that we can’t assume that the intricacies of the Colonial political system are exactly parallel to, say, the United States political system, or the Canadian system, or the British system (am I crazy, or did RDM mention in an interview that he likes the parliamentary system better?).
The question that I don’t think any of us (or the characters) have gotten a satisfactory answer as to how to adapt governmental responsibilities to the situation in which the RTF finds itself - at what point (if any) do pragmatic considerations outweigh ideological purity? The past few episodes have definitely challenged where I thought that line was, at least for me. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I suspect I’m not the only one being so challenged.
Ugh. I so rarely disagree with Audra, and yet, I HATE Raffi. Hate him. He makes me cry.
I suppose this would be worse than Raffi. If I had to choose I would take the Canadian Children’s Troubador himself. But I would almost rather listen to Kenny G than Raffi.
It’s true. I don’t think that the Chief will be important in the political or military leadership once they have a new social and command structure set up, but I do think those people should take note: if the Chief isn’t on board with your idea, you should reevaluate just to be sure.
Thanks!
My siggy got noticed!! Woo Hoo!!
Me got my fraggle shoes on.
