Oh yeah, I’m having a blast! I’d seen IV and VI before and everything after that, but as a kid (and later) I never got around to seeing the early movies. They are much better than I imagined. And I’m finally starting to appreciate the original crew. I grew up with Next Gen and never really understood or appreciated TOS. Now I’m all giddy about them - they’re like new old characters for me.
Well, your excitment is contagious, because thanks your discussion about 'em on the cast, I’m all the sudden I got a craving to go and rewatch ST:III (and to do that properly, I gotta rewatch II, and after III, IV --so I’m off to the races!!)
Yeah, it’s amazing how a show that was canceled after only 3 seasons picked up such a huge following in syndication; so much so that it had Shatsnizzle screaming “get a life!”
I remember the toy communicator, tricorder and phaser that shot little plastic discs. I’m lucky I still have both eyes.
I’m definitely looking forward to the Star Trek arc and Audra’s take on TOS.
Anybody see the ‘director’s cut’ of STTMP? It’s supposed to be much better.
I saw it, but it was good number of years ago. I think I remember that it included scenes that spiced up the character interaction a little bit—but I don’t remember. Sheesh! Now you’ve got me wanted to go back and rewatch that too.
Thing about the Trek (Original Series) movies is that, although I think I own most of them, I own 'em all on VHS, not DVD. And now I’ve pretty much given up on the VCR age—I don’t even have a VCR hooked up to my TV anymore.
Get the DVDs. It’s totally worth it, just for the clarity. The GF and I still spot things we never noticed.
I’ve never watch 'em on a "46 in HDTV. So yeah, time to buy the DVDs I guess.
Another problem is that my DVD is not a progressive scan DVD player—so the quality of DVD viewing is not as good as regular stuff TiVoed or watched live on TV.
Craaap, Pike…now you’ve got me thinking about spending even more money…
Doing my part to jump-start the economy…
It’s cleaned up a bit. The CGI work is flawless. It doesn’t feel like the work they did in Star Wars. It looks like model work that with more time they could have produced for the film in '79.
You get to see what V’ger’s ship actually looked like instead of that blinky graphic on the Enterprise viewscreen.
In the end, it’s still 2 hours of the Enterprise driving somewhere. The film is tighter but unfortunately it still lags. If I get a chance before the Trek arc, I’ll edit a youtube of the good bits.
IMO, I’ve always loved this film for the pure majestic view of the Enterprise in drydock. I remember seeing that on the big screen for the first time as a very young lad. After watching the 60s Trek on a 13" screen and then seeing that kinda makes an impression.
Oh man, remember when “on the air” meant “on the air”?
I used to have to get up and move the rabbit ears every time the ghosts appeared.
Entertainment systems nowadays can rival the theatres.
I was just explaining, to my five-year-old, life before remote controls. Having to get up and walk to the TV to change the channel. Truly a primitive age.
My Grandfather had the very first remote control.
Her name was “Helen.”
My dad named his remote “Harry” Sometimes Harry worked as a tuning aid as well by calculating how to pitch and yaw the antenna for maximum reception.
Are you referring to your Grandmother?
