GWC Podcast #132 (Bonus)

Good point. I’ve completely forgotten about that Eight. Who would make a hell of a lot more sense than Boomer actual, who I really don’t think is the case. Oh, wasn’t there a thread dedicated to nicknaming this Boomer wannabe? What did everyone settle on?

On another note, do Cylons need as much air as humans do? They don’t need to sleep; they don’t need radiation shots; perhaps they don’t necessarily need to breathe either. I can’t remember, were any cylons strangled to death? Oh, wait never mind. They did have that whole Leoben torture scene with the bucket, so I suppose they do need to breathe. Unless he was faking it…?

I vote he’s faking it. it did seem that he was able to stay under water longer than most people. but that was BSG Breaks ago.

What if the backyard BBQ eight is really just in Felix’s head? She does not seem to interact with anyone else (she does not seem to talk to anyone else and no one else seems to talk to her). The only indication we have that she is there for everyone else is the skin jobs comment from the deck crewman, but maybe the guy just has bad grammar? I don’t really have any other evidence other than a gut feeling, but it would also be a cool plot twist.

I’m going to be of the opinion skinjobs DO need oxygen to breathe, and will die in a vacuum, because:

We have seen skinjobs killed by:

Bullets
Stabbings
Viral Infection
Blunt Flashlight Trauma

And made severely ill, by:

Radiation of various wavelengths (Ragnar Anchorage Nebula)

I think the skinjob construction leaves them vulnerable to many of the same dangers that would kill a human. We never saw a Cavil or Leoben doing the deep space doggy-paddle back to Galactica after an airlocking, right?

And who’s responsible for that frakking hilarious Monty Python sendup at the end of 132 !!! I was laughing perfectly good coffee all over my dashboard…via my nose.

I love Tigh in these webisodes so far, but it would’ve been interesting to see this scene in particular play with Adama as they had originally planned to do, as Jane Espenson said in the webisode commentary.

I think the Cylons are built better than humans in a lot of respects (see: Cylon strength) but are not impervious to anything that humans aren’t. I mean, why go to the trouble of building yourself a nearly immortal body when you have the ability to download? It would usually be easier and less painful overall to just get a new body rather than live through the pain of healing the old one.

My theory on the Leoben water torture and Sharon never getting tired-type abilities is either 1) the Cylons are built more efficiently, so they don’t need as much air/sleep/etc., but they need some, 2) they do need the same amount of all those vital things that humans do, but they can “turn off” the sensations that go with not having those things, thus allowing them to continue on longer that humans since they don’t have to expend energy pushing past the pain, or 3) a combination of the two.

This reminds me of a “can Wolverine be killed?” discussion Sean and I had over lunch the other day, and I’m completely buying your explanation, Kappa. I’d believe that they might even be able to do with less oxygen since – I think I mentioned this in the 'cast, but should have if I didn’t – they seem to have more direct control over their “autonomic” functions than pure humans, but my guess is that no O2 means dead cylon.

If it’s a matter of optimizing human biological function, either by design, or through direct control of heart rate, etc., this would be the most likely assumption. They cannot do without, obviously, because with flesh and bone they have biochemical demands that must be met. (And are we abso-posi-tutely certain that they never sleep? Human musculature and central nervous system have an inherent need for some recovery time, melatonin releases and the like…)

I do not recall anyone saying on screen that the Cylon[z] never sleep. But there was that memorable scene when Baltar was getting out of bed with a still sleeping 3 and 6.

Also Athena waking up to a creepy Hera.

It’s not Boomer. I am as certain as I can be without going in search of spoilers. Boomer was on the base ship that exploded-- we just don’t know whether she went boom or escaped with Ringleader-Cavil.

Drat! I know how much that bugs the craaaap out of you.

I don’t know… the Cylons have already shown that without resurrection they are changing how they think about the value of their individual lives. Even if she did kill the others for Felix’s sake, I am not sure she’d do herself so casually.

Also, why hasn’t anyone brought up the fact that Gaeta can be a pen-weilding maniac? He is capable, when pushed beyond the limits of human endurance, of violence. Right, Butterfingers?

newest dance craze!

Ok, so I have a Crackpot Theory. But I am not going to write it…

Good point.

<scurries off to call GWC>[/QUOTE]

The theory might be a Crackpot, but I did write it. I will elaborate if you want thought (or even if you do not). If you notice whenever there is an ‘in the characters’ head moment the demanor of the person in the character’s head seems a bit off from what you would expect of a person who was there ‘in the flesh.’ That certainly describes the behavior of backyard BBQ eight when asking Felix if he remembers her. Furthermore, when she says that, no one else seems to take notice. Now that might be understandable, but given her seeming happiness (craziness?) it is odd that no one even looks at her. Now true, the normal signs of an ‘in the character’s head’ experience are not there, but that does not mean that shows producers couldn’t have changed things a bit.

Now as far as ‘Crackpot Theory’ goes. Is it any more of a crackpot theory than thinking that the backyard BBQ eight can affect a jump? Even the hybrid must be physically connected to the jump drives to affect a jump. There is nothing that suggests that a Cylon can wirelessly affect a Cylon jumpdrive much less a Colonial jumpdrive. Is it possible? Absolutely. It certainly could be something new that the producers/screenwriters are throwing into the mix. Of course, by the same token, an ‘eight’ that is completely in Gaeta’s head could be something new that the producers/screenwriters are throwing into the mix.

Finally…since I know it might read like I am offended…I am. When you call something a ‘Crackpot theory’ you are suggesting that the person who came up with it is a ‘crackpot’ and when you combine it with ‘scurries off’ the whole line becomes less than complimentary.

Hi Reydaman. Just to clarify, I don’t think Starbuccaneer was calling your theory a ‘crackpot theory’; judging from the previous post, I think she meant your theory inspired her with her own crackpot theory, which she then scurried off to call in about. Anyway, GWC is known for being a very friendly bunch of folks, so I am sure no offense was meant; we just don’t do that sort of thing here.

I like the idea of a “Head Eight.” If so, then the big question is: why Head Sharon for Gaeta? The Head characters usually taking on the guise of someone important to that character, so it would seem as though there’s still something that must have gone on between Gaeta and some Eight to make her that important to him…

Certainly no intent to offend on my part… I was describing a theory that pooped into my head and which I called in from the back of my office. It wasn’t a comment on anything you or anyone else had said. But just in case you’re really, actually offended, I promise that I’m a nice lady and don’t call people crackpots unless they, like me, are actually crackpots.

That actually is a good idea- the Head Sharon, I mean. There hasn’t been any indication that she is interacting with the rest of the crew. In fact, even the way that she helped Gaeta on the stairs would fit with the way that Head Six often interacts with Baltar. On the other hand, no creepy music, which is often a clue to the appearance of a Head character.

No, I’m pretty sure we’re sure they do sleep; it’s just that the Sharons in particular have demonstrated that they can handle going without sleep better than humans can. Back in “33,” everyone commented how Boomer didn’t seem as worn out as everybody else, and when Helo and Sharon were fleeing on Caprica, Helo can’t believe how Sharon can run so long without resting.

I apoligize since I have jumped to a conclusion that I clearly should not have. I only have two things to say in my own defense. First of all, I have a long history of ‘foot in mouth’ disease which joining the forum seems not to have cured. Second…it is sometimes hard for me to determine intention in a forum that I am new to. This does not, however, excuse me for jumping to a conclusion, and I will assume the best of intentions on everyones part in the future.

Don’t sweat it Reydaman, I always have problems reading people’s intents on posts too sometimes. That’s pretty much why I restrict my forum activity to GWC. Folks here abide.

Also, I’m pretty sure that if anyone from here did refer to a theory as crackpot, it could only be meant as a compliment. The crackpottier the better we say. Just look at this thread from season 4 and the discussion that ensued (click on the ‘>’ to got to original thread). Crackpots every one of us…

Reydaman,

First off, welcome to the Forums! As you explore and read you will discover that there is something a little peculiar about this place…it is 99% troll free <knock on wood> and everyone here is friendly, intelligent and thotful.

It can be a little disorienting if you have had other experiences in other forums. This will pass, trust me…as a old Scifi.com participant I needed several months of decompression before I realized that there wasn’t a dark tone associated with everything everyone wrote here.

See you on the boards.

Wait, what? You bastard!
