GWC Podcast #129

He best get second prize cause…crap I guess I never posted that post. I had a post written that said “what the frak did I just listen to at the end of the cast” but it musta got lost in the proxy jungle

When I was in grad school I figured that if all the grad students actually returned the books they had checked out, the library wouldn’t actually have the space to shelve them all.

Um, I just realised I got the date wrong. I have one job to do, and I stuffed it up! Chuck, I would have re-recorded it if you’d told me!

Summer Glaur X-Men trivia…

Summer auditioned for the role of “Kitty Pryde” in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and had even asked Joss Whedon (who was writing Marvel’s Astonishing X-Men comic book at the time and whose ideas contributed to the plot of X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)) for assistance in preparing for the part. Ultimately, the role went to Ellen Page.

…from IMDB

Yeah, I caught that too. I was walking between warehouses, a distance of about 150 yards in the middle of a blizzard when the cast ended, luckily i didn’t switch to a new cast, and I caught that at the end. If was fraking AWESOME! I’m glad I didn’t miss it.

A happy belated birthday to Audra, the Queen of cool.

Y’all rocked my socks tonight, some HILARIOUS and very insightful discusion. As well as changing my opinion on some of the characters, like wolverine. After your discussion I see him a whole new light. And somewhat comic’s in general. The whole Magento and Xavier debate was cool too.

Sean’s right about the meow’ing tunes…thats pretty darn infectious. I was sitting here kinda bopping along to it.

I just started the podcast, but I feel the urge to jump in.

First of all X-Men started as Stan Lee’s commentary on the Civil Rights movement in the 60s; casting Professor X as a sorta Martin Luther King Jr. and Magneto as an early, sorta, Malcolm X (you know peaceful coexistence vs. ‘any means necessary’). Later on (much later actually (late 70s/through the 80s), the story morphs from that to second Holocaust sorta thing.

Second. I totally disagree with Sean (sp?) on Wolverine being amoral. I think Wolverine has a totally well developed moral code (prime example the first Wolverine mini-series), but his morals just are not the same as the widely accepted morals of the world we live in.

Finally (for now)…darn…just lost my train of thought…hopefully I’ll get it back later after listening to more of the podcast.

Perfect example of why I should never post before listening to the whole podcast…I just heard the portion of the podcast where they discuss the Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X discussion.

sorry…

I was wondering if there is a site that I can go to for the history of comic books. I know so many start in the time of WWI and WWII and hope to use them in my history class. I am looking for authors etc. and the time they were written not the characters history. I would be thankful for the education. I could look up all of the authors and artists but one or two sites would make my work faster.

(Great 60s joke. :D)

Now back to finishing the second hour or so of the podcast.

Well there’s comic book Db http://www.comicbookdb.com/index.php which his darn comprehensive…otherwise i’d go for maybe wiki?

hope that helps Leah

I have been thinking about this, I thought maybe your first try might be a comic book pricing site. If you look at some of the WWII era books (Captain America, Human Torch, etc.) you should find some writer’s names and then you could google all those names together…that might get you what you want.

Albus is a little closer to Cyclops than Professor X. Albus had a clear goal to accomplish and that was prepare Harry to destroy Voldermort. Also Dumbledore wasn’t seeking power. If he was, he would of tried to become Minister of Magic.

Doesn’t Amoral mean your own kinda code and Immoral means no morals?

Oh man, I’m listening to this at work right now, trying to remember all the claims that need refuting, so I’m going to have to work up some counter arguments at home while listening to the cast again tonight.

I agree that this is going to be the best/geekiest of the arcs.

I am not usually one to believe in the whole ‘ends justify the means’ argument, but Xavier is as much a manipulator as any leader is. Also, we saw what would happen if there was no Prof X in the ‘Age of Apocalypse’ storyline, where the earth went to craaaap, and Magneto ended up turning into the Prof X-Role. Also, I may need to look this up, but I thought Prof X wiped magnetos mind because of the whole Wolverine skeleton - ripping out event. Am I mistaken? I also like how that mind ripping event let to onslaught! Oh yeah!

Who are ya’ll’s favorite X-Men artists? Mine = Art Adams, Jim Lee, Joe Madureira.

peace.

Another thing, re: the chess game. I need to go back and rewatch the chess match, but did anyone notice how many pieces the characters had captured? It seemed like Prof X was playing a way more offensive strategy, and Magneto was playing more defensively, I might have those backwards, but it seemed like the chess game showed their true colors!

Props to Sean for representing the aspiring color-blind artistis who can’t draw on paper.

that has to be the best podcast ever…

and the meow song Audra did at the end was probably the coolest thing i have EVER heard!

I just have one question about Professor X and Little Red Condom Hood. Even tho X does seem to manipulate people, but that’s just how he could use his power. If Magneto had the power to control thoughts, he wouldn’t hesitate to use it. In his own words, “by any means necessary”.

As the podcast mentioned often, it is the action that defines the person. So in the world of X-men, since Xavier was the one who controlled people’s thoughts and removing them of their choice, that he is indeed more sinister than Magneto. But I believe if their roles were reversed, X and Magneto would have done exactly the same thing as their counter-part.

To me, X and Magneto are essentially the same person with a different take on how to achieving the same goal and different tools to achieve it.

Lastly, I have actually met the actress who played Jubilee, Kea Wong when she was shooting the X3 and came down from Vancouver to LA and stayed at my ex’s house. So I asked a bunch of questions regarding what’s it like being on that set. Too bad Jubilee had such a small role in the movie, and with X3 they pretty much ended the X-men movie franchise.

Great podcast, side-effect uncontrollable laughter, people should not operate heavy machinery while listening to #129

Amoral means being neither moral nor immoral; not believing in or caring for morality and immorality

I do not play chess but I did notice that Magneto knocked over a piece as Prof X left. I thought it may have signified his attitude that he will win over time.

I really enjoyed the podcast but felt I missed some of the humor since there was naturally some laughter over the jokes. I really enjoy the very serious talk and then someone slips in a good joke. I really had some good laughs. I still need some help with the history of comics so if anyone has an idea of a resource I would be thankful for the help.

Art Adams all the way! I could stare at those X-Men annual covers for hours. And John Romita Jr’s work in the low 200’s was classic.
