GWC Podcast #124

Aw, Shaun of the Dead is a great choice for the podcast. That being said, please go watch Spaced! I’m surprised you haven’t watched it yet. They re-released the entire series maybe a couple of months ago or so in the states, so it should be pretty easy to get your hands on a copy.

Side question for Sean, given his prowess at anime (or anyone else here who are also anime-meisters who might know):-

This is a long shot, given the lack of info I can give on it, but I recall watching this anime when I was a kid (sometime in the late 80’s). It was kind of a OVA (movie form) of sorts (I’m not sure if it ever was an actual series), and it featured this dude with some kind of a mechanical cat-girl of sorts as a pet ever since he was a kid. I think either his dad made her, or worked at the company that made her. I think his mother’s not around, maybe dead. I think the cat girl had purple/pink hair, and as with all anime, totally hot, as a cat and as a woman. The story had something to do with breaking back into the company/factory that made her when the kid grew up (probably in his teens?) It’s Japanese, but I watched it in dubbed Chinese, so I’m not even sure if it ever made its way into the States. It’s also pretty obscure, because I remember looking for it a while back, and getting hits on something with a similar premise (regarding the cat-girl part), but NOT the show I remember. And I don’t think there’s a lot of/any nudity in it either, so… sigh. I wish I could remember the name of one or any of the characters.

Somehow, I just imagine that German strip clubs are more interesting than ours.

Any particular reason why talking about strip clubs reminded you of him?

Actually, I’ve been wondering the same thing myself the past few days.

Some of the mentioned alternatives were My Little Pony and Aliens, but really, why choose? :stuck_out_tongue:

Weird. When I saw those pics, all I could think of was gremlins.

ETA: I will always think of “the landing strip” when I see one.

Really, I have never scene an anatomically correct lego figure.

I accept the challenge!

As a matter of fact, it IS pretty difficult to find such a thing. I tried googleing LEGO PENIS and LEGO [other things], but I got nothing. Nothing. I gotta try harder…

Now you have. :stuck_out_tongue:

Here you go.

I totally understand buddy. mrskintalos must check up on you to see what you post. I think she may be worried because 5000 posts in a year is technically a love affair. Then there is the whole Shatner thing.

Honestly, I agree with you and I have never been to one.

In Armando’s defense it is like collecting comics. Someday his daughters will need to go to college and since investing is so risky nowadays he needs to invest in something that will hold its value. Also, after Judgment Day, he will be a rich man. With no more internet and no means of production and distribution it will be as good as gold.

For all we know, Armando could have a side job scoring them. Then after they release it he gets a free copy.

Here is an idea. You can give up the strip clubs, take frakkintalos’s advice on starting a venture and open the first Lego porn site. You could get some cross promotion with a company like Vivid and release sets for the different videos they make. It your really good you could make some life sized models and create a magazine.

Thank everything that is good and true in this world that the podcast finally discussed this film, because I have to admit, after countless viewings, it has not only become the tenet of my lifelong affliction with RFQR (Random Film-Quote Tourette’s), but no matter how many times I watch it, I pick up more and more gems that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright wove into it, both visually and through dialogue.

I’m sure I’ll have plenty to expound on in future posts regarding the film, but for those unaware of Pegg/Wright’s background, know that you can see the grassroots of their comedic writing along with Jessica Stevenson (whom you’ll recognize as Shaun’s doppelganger, Yvonne) and Nick Frost (Ed) in the BBC series “Spaced”. Absolute comedy gold, I tells ya!

Two side notes on the podcast itself this week – first, I love hearing people react to their first viewing of the film, because you simply can’t help laughing out loud at even the recollection of half the material, and Chuck and Audra just seemed to be loving every minute of it…huzzah! (Audra’s got that signature laugh, too, which just makes it all the more entertaining…) Second, the idea of zombie speed is one that I’ve had a number of coffee table discussions about, and while SotD is a tribute to classic zombie films (with the shuffling, groaning class of zed-words) in its own right, I think the industry is definitely shifting to the new style of fast-moving attackers, as in “I Am Legend” or “28 Days Later”, though I know, I know, they are infected, not undead, but I refuse to get into that debacle…anyway, that’s my soapbox, and y’all can kick me off if you choose.

“Vacant…with a hint of sadness…like a drunk, who’s lost a bet…” Classic!

HM: It’s a Will Smith sci-fi movie arc. First Men in Black, then Independence Day, then I, Robot. Yay!!

Welcome, Keir! Thanks for the recommendation - I will totally be on the hunt for Spaced now. OMG, RFQR! That’s the name of my condition!! My students look at me like I’m insane but now I have a name for it. Not that I’m interested in a cure, mind you…

(laughs signature laugh)

Duh, that was my bad, should have been RFQT, I can’t even acronymalize right today! No cure, just a lifetime of puzzled looks from across holiday meal tables after you blurt out something like, “They’re cuttin’ off my thumb, here, Ira!” (Note to self – time to watch Suicide Kings again)

Well, we do the Blockbuster mail-rental thang, and they have the complete Spaced set (seasons 1 and 2, about 7 or 8 episodes each plus a bonus disc) that just recently released in US disc format NTSC…they were strictly UK (PAL) a while ago, and I had to pay a guy over there to rip and re-burn them, but totally worth it. Netflix must have them too, I would imagine. The GWC masses will absolutely hold them near and dear, as they touch on scifi fandom and all the film and TV references that make us…well, ‘a warm gathering of scarcely interconnected geeks and nerds’. Wheee.

Incidentally, Simon Pegg being the next Scottie has to be quite the buzz over on the various Trek forums, though I’ve never ventured there…all I know is that they’ve asked Pegg to sign a waiver not to discuss his interpretation of the character, or what variation of the brogue he’ll bring to the table. Strange days, indeed…

Hey Chuck! (and other Kevin Smith enthusiasts) Television Without Pity has a very funny “family-friendly” rundown of Zack & Miri. Seems Smith’s having some trouble promoting a flim with “porno” in the title. Who’d have thot?

I really don’t see why, seeing as all the virgin/stoner/teen pregnancy movies don’t seem to have problems in “fly-over country”. When I lived in Kansas City, “Knocked Up” was packed, and I saw a couple folk from my former church there.

I’m gonna go see Zach and Miri Make a PORNO as often as I can, though the theaters will more than likely be packed here in my new home of Seattle.

Do’H!

[Text added for the minimum post length, I think this should be enough…]

here’s the spoilerish threadless shirt.

I’m not a religious man, but Superman, if you can hear me, please buy me this shirt for my birthday. Amen.

We wants the shirt, precious.

For the record, Chuck, I don’t think you and I disagree nearly as much as you think we do. And if you disagree with that, well, what can I say?

Oh, I like you.
