GWC Podcast #110

This talk of confronting Vader reminded me of another revelation I had while re-watching ESB this time. When Luke escapes from Vader by dropping down into the pit I had always assumed that fell to the bottom through a shaft. I had assumed he might have had a little help from the Force to make sure he hit the shaft and not splat on the floor. However, on this watching I realized that I think it intended to show him actually “Force-flying” through a shaft on the side of the big bottomless pit. It wasn’t particularly clear, and I don’t think I understood it until I saw what Jedi’s are supposed to be capable of in the Prequels. It’s a minor point, but understanding it this way kind of better underscores how much Luke has grown to be able to focus and use the Force despite the news he just heard from Vader.

As Yoda said, “Control, control! You must learn control!”

hey that’s cool! i always thought it was some kind of vacuum on the side of the wall that sucked luke into that and spat him out onto the weather vane…and i’m sure there’s going to be some kind of naughty backlash from GR but hopefully it made sense!! i like it better if it’s luke using the force to fly

I’ll have check the novel again but I believe those were intake ports. So Luke was sucked in. I also remember somewhere that Vader tries to hold Luke and bring him back at one point but decides to let him go figuring he would die from the fall.

I always thought they were garbage shoots. It seems the best way to rid your self of waste is just dump it into a gas giant were the heat would just instantly burn it away. Luke just got lucky/used the force to grab the weather vane

That’s interesting… I wonder though if the authors of the books were limited in the same way that I was by not (obviously) having seen the prequels. Those of use who first saw these movies years ago really had no idea as to the abilities of Jedis. Who knows, Lucas may not have even had a clear idea at that point as to what type of abilities he would eventually imbue upon the Jedis?

We’ve mentioned a number of instances where interpretations of characterization have changed once the Prequels came out. Are there other instances in the OT or EU were the Prequels require re-interpretation of particular actions or plot points can possibly be interpreted? Like ST is there a hierarch of what is considered canon?

That’s pretty much what happened. I believe he tried to retcon it with the ‘diminishment of the force’ line.

Luke’s hand also survives the fall, kinda… Which opens the door for a pretty big plot point in the later novels. Which I haven’t read, but that’s what Wookiepedia says.

i think i remember seeing the hand fall out when luke spilled out…???

and holy CRAP!! we just had a humungous earthquake here!!

Gotta love your dedication. Earthquakes rumble your world but you stick it out on the Forum…Hope you and yours are all ok

Wow…the quake hit you mid post and you kept going. I am glad to hear you are ok!

Livia - are you OK?

Assuming/hoping you are, I wonder if we should try to set up a blind date between Luke’s hand and Gaeta’s leg?

If you really wanted it to be a blind date wouldn’t you want Tighes eye to go along

Genius. Although then it really would not be a blind date.

Well if they had the eye then for the date they could go to the “Show of Arms” of all the other dismembered limbs of the SW universe…

On lead vocals Anakin’s arm

Backing vocals include:

Mace’s right arm
Count Duku’s hands
Walrus man’s arm with attached blaster

Artistic interpretive dance:

Darth Maul’s lower half

You know, I don’t thick we’re quite right…

After the show they can go get some Hand dipped Eye’s cream.

OMG you guys are too clever!! and yes i’m fine  it was only a 5.8!! and if the power is still on it’s all good!!

Yay, glad you are ok. I guess saying its only a 5.8 is like saying its only a Cat 1 Hurricane for us East Coasters

Nice.

We need a head and a torso. If sci fi fails, we can get the head from the black knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Although events in Alien present possibilities if we are OK with androids.

I am at a loss for a suitable torso.

as a college-aged (maybe slightly, just slightly older) individual, i will say that i and practically all of the people i know (100% of the men, and at least 85% of the women) are at least moderately, if not intimately, familiar with the details of the original SW trilogy. i am both shocked an appalled at the ignorance of Audra’s students, but i’m glad they have her to educate them where their previous teachers have failed.

i’m upset by how hot i think that alien (Twi’Lek? maybe?) is.
