GWC Podcast #110

Do any of the people you know have a lead on a torso?

At one point C-3PO was just a torso. You might say he was Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes…

you want a torso? i can get you a torso, believe me. there are ways, dude. you don’t wanna know about it, believe me.

um…what about the Vader that Luke decapitates in the cave? Anakin’s pretty much just a head on a one-armed torso by the time he puts on the black suit. sure, he’s not really real, but these are fictional characters we’re talking about.

or maybe The Phantom Limb from Venture Bros.? he has a head, though.

The Death star that david was talking about…is that that really stupid little deathstar that was the size of ra rock? I think I can break that thing. I was so excited to get it. When I got it, I was just pissed.

i think phantom limbs arms and legs are there…weren’t they just rendered invisible by a laboratory mishap???

and a 5.8 is actually kinda big…but it’s not like living in hurricane season or tornado season…NO WAY would i trade an earthquake every few years for that!! most of the buildings are “earthquake proof” so i just went for a ride…WHEEE!

you guys are awesome!! though…still laughing at the whole tigh’s eye blind date thing!!

So its a Cat 2. I went thru that many years ago. But despite living in Florida for almsot 20 years i have yet to get a direct hit by a hurricane. They seem to dodge both Tallahassee and Tampa. But i have had random storms that have been pretty devastating that come out of no where that cause close to hurricane damages.

But im glad we can amuse you

We’ll go with that. Mission accomplished.

Yes - that’s how I remember it, now that I read your post. I loathe when I bring something up in the podcast that’s a long-shelved memory that I should totally know, and then just space on it…thanks starbuccaneer!

I remember always seeing kids riding those with another kid standing on the back, hanging onto the sissy bar.

Smart kiddo!

Lol, it reminds me of Back to the Future:

Doc: Then tell me, Future Boy, who is the President of the United States in 1985?
Marty: Ronald Reagan.
Doc: Ronald Reagan, the actor?! Ha! Then who’s Vice President, Jerry Lewis? I suppose Jane Wyman is First Lady.
Marty: Whoa, wait Doc.
Doc: And Jack Benny is Secretary of the Treasury?

Sorry Boomerang! I’ll see if we can’t get it back for the next cast.

Interesting. I wonder if Lucas intended to evoke Plato’s cave from the Republic, the whole learning the truth about life thing, enlightenment through the Force?

All right now, first of all, these are college students (not high school), and while I gladly accept the title of “geek” here, I don’t think they were witholding out of embarrassment. I think, though, that they were holding back, or not paying attention, because a couple of people later indicated they were familiar with the story. But the kid who said “the guy in the black suit” was quite sincere.

I always expect him to come tumbling out the chute and start to go all Total Recall in the lack of atmosphere. “My EYYYYEEEES!!! My EYYESSS!!!”

Yes!!!

You TOTALLY took the idea right outta my head, lol.

I can get you a torso, Dude. I can get you a torso by three o’clock. Don’t ask how.

See my last post. We’re good to go. Keep the Jersey boys in check for now. I’m sure they’ll be needed at some point.

I thought we were still short a head… But then I remembered we can use Count Duku’s… It should still be rolling around the remains of Grevious’s ship…

Maybe, but I don’t know for sure. His first film, THX-1138, follows the structure of the allegory of the cave. The parting shot is THX, played by Robert Duvall, exited the underground city and in silhouette with the sun.

I do know, as I’m sure you do, that the structure of the first Star Wars film was based on Campbell’s, the Hero Journey. So it wouldn’t suprise me if Lucas used the cave as you said.

I tested this out on some 20-somethings at me workplace. Two of them had never seen Star Wars. There should be laws. Why is this not required viewing in like third grade? Now, I despise politics but I think I might lobby this.

I’ve got a picture of their first date. Don’t they make a lovely couple?

All of that for just 80 pounds…Such a deal…

Oh, this one makes me nuts. The whole point of Campbell is “here are the basic elements of an epic tale, regardless of culture.” So if you write an epic, guess what?

It reminds me of people who used to claim that the ancient Egyptians understood Pi, based on the measurements of the pyramids. Then someone pointed out that if they used a wheel to lay out dimensions, then Pi insinuates itself whether you understand it or not.

i always felt like with 4 5 &6, GL was more concerned with just telling us a story and while you can see the elements of what joseph campbell was talking about, star wars was just a great MODERN myth and it was a great teaching aid to illustrate the relevance of these classic myths and how and why they still keep coming around…but then in 1~3, the influence was more overt like joseph campbell was being shoved into my face…i felt like GL was going to extremes to adhere to the dogma of the archetypes set forth by the myth guru instead of telling luke’s story  and in my head i’m screaming, “please just tell me a good story!”

However in this case Lucas has admitted that he used the guidelines that were Campbell laid out. Which is different than saying that his work happens to fall into Cambell.

Meh. It’s like a painter saying he studied Newton’s “Optiks.” It’s intellectual posturing, without any real benefit.

i think he had read campbell in college but then collaborated with him for 1~3…i heard campbell came and stayed on skywalker ranch…i think some elements of campbell’s influence work well and other’s he just tried to cram in there “because”…4 5&6 happened to fall into campbell 1~3 were written in accordance

i have been trying to ahve this discussion for decades!!! woot for people being familiar with joseph campbell and how it relates to star wars!! YIPPEE! best day ever (oh but coulda done without the earthquake hee hee!)

Ive known about Joe Campbell since i was about 11 or so. We had a book on tape of an a abridged lecture of a Hero of a 1000 faces. I listened to it alot cause it had some cool stories in it and it sunk in some but when i hit high school english and we started talking about Campbell and i was like wait i’ve heard this all before…since then i have totally dug him.

that’s why i need to be here on the boards cause you guys treat it like old hat and EVERYONE in my “real” life has never even heard of him and i’m like 'joseph campbell joseph CAMPBELL JOSEPH CAMPBELL!!" lol no one ever reads anything i recommend :frowning: and honestly, i feel like i’m the stupidest person ‘in the room’ cause you guys continually blow me away with your ideas and insights
