GWC Podcast #107

Probably closer to the truth about how it came down than we would like to admit.

That’s the legend re his wife. You know. Like letting your daughter star in Godfather III.

Speaking of actors weighing in re dialogue - What the frak was William Shatner thinking? How about “I refuse to speak those words. If you do not write a better ending for him, find somebody else to play Kirk.”

i just remember watching one of those behind the scenes documentaries shortly after seeing return of the jedi and i DISTINCTLY remember carrie fisher (and gang) talking about THEIR reactions to leia being “the other” and luke’s sister…she said (and i’m quoting loosely) “george wrote himself into a corner…he needed something dramatic to push luke over the edge…by this time he had been working on star wars for about ten years…he didn’t realize when he started that it was going to take up so much of his time and he just wanted to be done with it” that has haunted me for nearly 15 years…it just gave me the impression that george just said eff it…leia is the sister let’s get er done!! (so that he could move on to his other projects and then when he found out his “other projects” weren’t very good he came back to the golden goose :frowning: i have always ALWAYS felt let down with leia being the other…it was soooo anti climatic for me :frowning:

i think this is another reason i like serenity/firefly so much…the actors really cared about their characters and knew them inside out…joss whedon even made a joke on the commentary that he told nathan fillion (mal) say something mal would say!! and asked himself why did i spend so much time writing a script when i could have just had you guys improvise through the whole thing lol!!!

I don’t know… I always thought it was kind of crucial to the plot, because Luke needed to really care about the Other so that it could be a desperately held secret that Vader could intuit in their final confrontation. I don’t know who else Luke would have cared so much about in the story…

That’s true. The whole reason Luke is able is redeem his father is because of the love and compassion he learned from his friends. (mainly Han and Leia) Finding out that they are siblings makes the bound between Luke and Leia even stronger. Notice how Luke nearly gives into anger in the final duel due to the bound between himself and Leia.

i think the bond was strong enough…vader could still have taunted luke using his feelings for leia and his friends to make him angry and get him to snap in the final dramatic confrontation…i know i love my friends more than my blood family…my friends are my family…you don’t need blood ties to care deeply about someone…again, another reason why firefly is so powerful for me is the idea of created family…

also it’s not like they grew up together the way simon and river did

it would still be a desperately held secret vader could intuit because luke knows if he fails, that the other (his NOT LEIA sister) is in danger and it would be his fault and therefore the galaxy and his friends are in danger…

vader says “your feelings for them are strong…especially for” …lukes mind turns to leia and their last conversation and the promise she made to him to go and find his “SISTER!! sooo…you have a twin sister!! obi wan was wise to hide her from me…yada yada yada”

So are you saying you wish the other was some one other than a Skywalker? If that is the case then Luke wouldn’t really have a connection to the Other and it would seem he wouldn’t have been able to intuit who it was from Obiwan and Yoda who themselves were trying to keep it a secret. Wow, that was a particularly awful sentence… good thing my 6th English grade teacher doesn’t inhabit these boards…

no he DEFINATELY has a twin sister just it’s not leia ~ it’s baby girl skywalker lol hidden from luke, vader and the emperor by yoda and ben…i LOVE THE IDEA OF TWINS just not that the girl baby is leia…divine twins like artemis and apollo is a great mythological theme

the way i re~imagine it, after yoda dies, ben takes luke aside and tells him “the other he spoke of is your twin sister…” i tried to keep as much of the original dialogue and story as possible so instead of luke saying “leia leia is my sister!!” it goes like this (in my pee brain!)

ben “to protect you both from the emperor you were hidden from your father when you were born…the emperor knew as i did that if anakin were to have any offspring they would be a threat to him…that is the reason your sister remains safely anonymous”

then luke would say something like “but where is she? how will i find her”

then ben says “the force will guide her destiny as it has guided yours…use your feelings and find her you will lol”

then luke could say in astonished joy “i have a sister…”

ben “bury your feelings deep down luke…they do you credit but they could be made to serve the empire!!”

my wireless internet cuts out sorry bout the double post AND for the poor punctuation and lack of capitalizations…i type too fast and i forget!!!

Just so you know, the GF requested a copy of that one. Nice.

You know, this makes me re-think my answer to Leah’s original question a bit. Yes, the Ewoks seemed really great as a kid (even had myself a stuffed Wicket) and now they seem kind of…dumb. (But I still say that movie is better than 1,2 or 3.)

As for Kirk’s death - yep, total tripe. sigh.

To all you Ewok haters… listen to Brother Warick!!

//youtu.be/yuviqXSdc4k

awesome!! LOL…that’s so cool they got that guy from " expose " (that show within the show on lost??) to play the reverend lol!!

Now that would be great!

Almost any movie is better than 1,2 or 3. (Overstatement - only 1/2 of all movies ever made are better than 1,2 or 3.)

Your point sort of sums it up about Lucas after The Empire Strikes Back (a terrific movie - even 30 years later) - to appeal to the broadest possible audience (think $$$) he made movies that appealed to almost nobody.

Wow, that’s great! I’m thrilled your kids like listening to the 'cast! Now I just hope I didn’t say anything too risque…(!)

Thanks for sharing us with your family.

I just want to know if they’ve picked up on “Sorry, Barb.”
