The Kazon were probably the lamest enemies in Trek history. I agree the show was a lot of fun otherwise, even the way-too-many Cosmic Oddity of the Week episodes. Re: Threshold, I still find it staggering how Janeway basically abandoned her own children in the Delta Quadrant. This is the woman that Q wanted to bear his child?
I would personally liked more Zarek…
And here’s my thought on Romo.
Romo was so cool and everyone loved him because he always seems to be a step a head of everyone. During the Baltar trial, he played EVERYONE. He played Lee, he played Baltar, he was given a task and he did whatever necessary to achieve that task. It’s his own unique morals and he’s ability to look ahead that made him a cool character.
By having him slaving over the white board while the viewers already knew what the outcome is going to be destroyed a big part of what made him cool.
Now, had they have him pretend to be working on the list, but use it as a way to guide Lee to realize his own ambitions, now that would been cool. But to have him really found out after the viewers, and decide to point a gun at Lee, while puts a human side to Romo, but makes him less interesting…
I know what you mean. I’m feeling the same thing about Lost. As excited as I was to finally see it this past week, the end of that episode means no more for almost eight months.
and I want to delay the inevitable as long as possible, because once that magic number 420 comes upon us, it’s all over, my friends.
That’s nonsense. There has never been a documented fatality from…
oh. Season 4, episode 20. I thought you meant… something else.
I’m just scratching my head. The Lee thing was overdone, but it will probably give fuel to Baltar. I don’t know what to make of Six’s pregnancy or Tigh’s lack of superstrength. Admiral Tigh is the biggest WTF moment.
It’s not a standalone, so I’m not ready to bash it until I see where they go next.
unless Pike is the final Cylon, otherwise you should bash them for letting you float to the top like that.
IMDB says the actor who plays Pike (the BSG Pike, not the GWC Pike) is also in the next two episodes, so I’m hoping we’ll be getting a “what happened at the other end of the galaxy while Romo was having a head cat” two-parter
Edit: You know, if there are people out there who have read or seen the Stanislaw Lem novel “Solaris” or one of the two movies by that name, they have head characters in “Solaris” too…
I don’t think that valid criticism necessarily has to rise to the level of bashing. The editing and pacing was off. The storyline itself was great, though.
Lastly RE: Tigh. I actually think this is going to work out awesome. Just imagine: Tigh single handedly saves the RTF as Galactica actual. Then, after the hub, no. 3 reveals the final five. That’s the way I would like to see it go, because it would be a huge WTF moment for everyone, and like Sean, I like to see people get their heads messed with.
I also think he’ll do fine. He’s been a lot more even-tempered, rational, and confident since finding out he’s a Cylon. OTOH, a Cylon is in charge of the safety of all humanity. That still has to give us some pause.
Yeah, that was odd. Zarek just rolled over way too easily. Unless he’s plotting something behind the scenes (which is certainly possible), it was just so out of character for him to just step aside like that.
Even more so with the state Adama was because of Roslin.
Maybe that wouldn’t have been so disconcerting if they hadn’t been so coy implying the nature of their relationship. Until this episode, it could have easily been written off as nothing more than a close friendship or even just spending some time with a dying associate.
Someone had mentioned that the whole gun incident was some sort of test to see if Lee had the character that Romo believed he did. I didn’t think so during my first viewing of the episode, but I could swear there was the slightest inkling of a smile after Lee “passed”, so I can almost see that this argument has merit. I say almost, because the whole thing with carrying around the dead cat for weeks definitely calls his man-with-a-plan status into question.
Good point. The Old Man stepping down at the same time could give his presidency a certain dynastic quality.
I don’t know what to make of Six’s pregnancy or Tigh’s lack of superstrength. Admiral Tigh is the biggest WTF moment.
It’s not a standalone, so I’m not ready to bash it until I see where they go next.
A very enlightened position, considering that they killed you.
Oh yeah! I forgot about that. Great book. A planet-size goo tub.
As always, Sean, Audra, and Chuck did a great job on the latest podcast for Sine Qua Non. Lots of fun to listen to.
…yet it seemed to me that they were more upbeat, funnier, and just grooving on things more than usual. I have NO complaints about the other podcsts (I’m on my second go-around of all 102), but the three of them seemed to be having a even more wonderful time on this one.
Seems to me that many folks are just upset because Romo turned out NOT to be super human but just as humanly frakked up as everyone else. It would have been totally out of character for BSG to have a character that wasn’t some kind of head case.
Yes, the Lee thing became obvious but really, think about it, Lee is the most junior member of the quorum so it’s only natural that others should be considered before him, duh! Zarek is a realist, he knows when he’s beaten. He no doubt will have influence. He was stonewalled as pres.
I have always thought that BSG is Voyager done right. Voyager should have been dark and gritty and all about survival against the odds… the crew should have dwindled over time along with the number of shuttles and there should have been no reset button… but alas, Voyager was a planet/ hostile alien-of-the-week show that got old fast.
I wouldn’t say Voyager got old fast. There are merits to the more episodic TV shows. There are episodes of Voyager that is incredibly challenging to intellectuals. And people really grow to LOVE the characters and their friendships. I get less of that feeling when watching Battlestar.
I think Voyager’s problem is it was setup to focus on a certain demographic, instead of just doing something that they thought was great.
Unfortunately, it was focusing on a demographic that is stereotyped to be easily impressed (by boob scenes), and show really went out of their way to impress them with these stereotypes.
Regarding the whole SG1 nudity bit. I remember watching the pilot a number of times of television and then I picked up the DVDs. When it got to the scene mentioned, it was a bit of a “Those women were in the nip!!” moment (a little Father Ted humour). I believe would have remembered that scene.
hansoiux, I believe you’re spot on about the Big Three choosing to discuss each episode as a real-world event instead of criticizing the creative/production end of things. It makes for a good discussion whether you think the episode was well crafted or not. Like many others, I think this one was not, but I don’t think it was nearly as bad as, you know, Black Market, Sacrifice, or any of the Season 3 fillers. The creators made some big moves on their chess board–Lee’s presidency, Cap6’s pregnancy, Tigh’s command, Adama’s resignation, Athena’s incarceration–so the story’s still rolling, but it went over a few bumps this week.
I’ve always been iffy about Romo. Nothing against the actor–he’s cool enough to call in to the show, right?–but while his shades-of-gray motivations were spot on with the themes and characters of BSG, the character himself seemed a little too much, a little too over the top for the world he’s in (and it seemed all the more obvious since he popped up near the end of season 3, when some main characters’ development seemed to drag a little).
Zarek on the other hand, fit the show like a glove and provided all kinds of intrigue long before Romo showed up, and I feel this episode would have been more in tune with the character of the show as we’ve known it if the conflict and been between him and Lee. Maybe as a nice bookend to the first time they met on the prison ship. I mean seriously, Zarek has been a charismatic, though unscrupulous, leader all this time, and then as soon as Adama won’t listen to him he rolls over and plays dead? This isn’t the Zarek I was used to. I wanted to see some sparks fly. Instead, he got pushed aside so that the fan-favorite-of-the-moment could get some screen time.
That’s about all the venting I’ll own up to, 'cause I don’t want to step on any toes.
On another note: RIP Emily, Pike, and the kitty. (And, if you recall, Kat was “Topgun” at the time she died.) I’m getting paranoid.
Just went back and re-watched part of “Blink of an Eye” the Voyager episode where the planet is spinning really fast (its my favorite Voyager episode btw). Doesn’t look like the Doctor ever mentioned what name he had while he was down on the planet but he did have some romance and also had a son (I can only imagine by adoption) named Jason. The only time he ever picked a name was on the second to last episode of the show. He picked the name Joe.
I also agree with Chuck that Kes was a terrible character. In my opinion maybe the worst character ever made for sci-fi.
Still finishing up the podcast but thought I would pause and comment.
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Yeah, the reveal that Lance was dead made me cry. You just can NOT mess with people’s pets. I saw a fantastic movie last night, The Fall, and I also cried when the evil henchmen killed fantasy-Charles Darwin’s pet monkey.
Yeah, that was exacTly the problem with the ep, I think.
GR, I agree. Actually, there was an interesting mix of criticism and praise going on in the frak parties for EST and PT on Friday evening (not much help to you, of course, as it would be 4 or 5 a.m. over there and your ep aired days ago). I am in the didn’t like it camp but also in the loved Romo camp. More on that in a moment…
In my opinion, the problem wasn’t sloppy writing as much as it was sloppy episode layout. I wasn’t surprised that they didn’t address where the base ship went and I am ok to wait, but they still packed way too much into this one ep for it to feel well paced or well developed. Romo’s story took up too much time; I think it would have been more effective to use his story as a way to frame all the other action, instead of switching around from character to character and arc to arc.
This has to do with the fact that I think RDM really needed another 1/2 season to do this justice. Some of the eps have literally blown me away, while others have felt forced, almost always by time constraints. For example, in S2 or S3 the Romo mini-arc would have been presented as a complete narrative. They would likely have included some scenes from after the trial, with him really going down the tubes, so that his changes in behavior were in context. They would also probably have cut some Laura/Bill into the narrative about Adama losing it. And I think that the Lee/Adama scenes would have been more satisfying. Ultimately, this is skiffy’s fault for committing to the desired 2 additional seasons (and to pour money into craaaap like that monster-bugs take over Earth thing they keep pimping!) but RDM and co. should also have adjusted their story line a bit better, accordingly, I think.
I wasn’t sure I was on board with him pulling a gun on Lee or with his direct attack- both of which seemed out of character from what we saw in S3. But once we got the full story I felt like it did make more sense. Lance wasn’t just a cat- Lance was his past, his family, the mitigating factor keeping him from the full burden of his perceived sins. Plus, like Chuck said, if people killed my cat, I would probably try to kill them.
I also think that Lee needed to get bitch-slapped by someone other than Adama or Zarek about the false-humility and repressed ambitions. I think Lee knew he wanted the job and that he was the best option, but that it would look crass and nepotistic, so he wanted to wait a while longer before going for it. Plus, he’s never asked for things and I think he doesn’t like how it makes him feel to do so. I’m glad he got the talking-to from Romo.
The characterization moment that bugged me the most was Kara. She was cool as a cucumber in her 30 seconds on screen. What happened to Kara being totally driven by her need to understand the Hybrid and pursue her destiny to find Earth? I know they want to put Katee into each ep, and I want to see as much of her as possible, but I’d rather do without her than have her acting as the CAG and doing a good job out of nowhere. She hasn’t looked that with-it since S2! What the frak?
I hadn’t thought of this yet, but I think you’re on to something, Lucky. That would be a fantastic way to bring the civilians into the process of cultural integration with the Cylons. Tigh is pretty reviled among the civvie ships since the Gideon incident in S2, so if he could redeem himself with them and then get outed in quick succession, that would be awesome.
First I am sorry for your lost. Animals are often more understanding than people.
I was wondering did anyone really see the Romo’s cat? Could there have been only a head cat all along? I think some of Rome’s show of humanity may have been a way to sway Lee. We know he was always a bit off since he stole small items etc.
I was wondering if the baby in the dreams were 6’s future baby and not Hera. Hera shared the dreams and that could be why she drew the pictures.
Last question. Where was the dog seen before? I can not remember him. I have two lovely Australian Shepherds and can not understand how I missed him.
not to be a wet blanket, but you wouldn’t think Cookie Monster’s recognizing cookies as a “sometime food” was utterly and completely ridiculous if you took a good look at an elementary school playground these days, especially one in a low-income area. the number of kids who are not only overweight, but obese is staggering and depressing.
Good thought on the baby! Wow, how interesting. I am not sure I agree, but I think that Cap-Six may have been clueing in to the fact that Hera is different and representative of the future of humanity and Cylonity. Perhaps with a Six-baby, though, Head Six will stop referring to Hera as hers and Gaius’s.
The dog is Jake, from the webisodes and brief appearances in Exodus and Collaborators. He was someone’s pet in the city of New Caprica and Chief and Gaeta used his food dish as a way to pass messages from inside Baltar’s government to the resistance.
