Just finished listening to the 'cast, and while I was impressed (as usual) with the new perspectives the GWCers brought to the show, I have to disagree with Audra on Lee not being able to pull off long hair. No, I guess that’s not quite accurate–I agree that Lee looks better with the short military cut than with the presidential hair, but Jamie Bamber can totally rock long hair. He was in A&E’s “Horatio Hornblower” TV-movies with Ioan Gruffudd.

Couldn’t find a good shot of the period ponytail, but it works.

OK, earlier we were talking about Jamie and long hair. I had a friend of mine cap this for me. It is from the making of, or one of the DVD extras from Hornblower

You guys mentioned the Cylon girl dying holding the Doc’s hand and that brought this back to mind. Here is something to ponder… The colonists believe in multiple Gods (pagan) and yet when Roslyn’s friend died of her cancer, she crossed over in the “Christian” way (ie: all of her family was waiting for her on the other side). However, the Cylons are Monotheistic and when the girl died on the operating table, she crossed over into a forest which very much looked like the Summerlands, the pagan belief of the afterlife. Just an odd thought.

I took the boat and the family on the river bank differently. The river Styx was the image I got. Crossing the river to the afterlife is not really a monotheistic idea. A Greek idea of afterlife include family members on the other side of a river. The Iliad for example. Hera, Athena, and Helios are in the Iliad. Wow religious ideas are so complicated that even TV religions are often perplexing.

I actually enjoyed Enterprise more than Voyager, especially that last season. Man, too bad it got canceled right when the show started getting awesome. I loved the theme song. I know it was a drastic change from the other series openings, but I thought it was awesome.

LOL Yeah I admit that the series ender, was stupid. It’s like the show runners knew they were going to be fired and so they are like “See!! We made TNG…” Totaly pointless.

Okay, I rewatched Sine Qua Non last night (while not drinking to allow myself to pay better attention) and have a better feel for the Lee-Romo confrontation and its higher significance. The big moment came when Lee said that he has made the choice to believe in… for the lack of better words… the better angels of humanities nature. This hasn’t always been the case in the series. Apollo started out the idealist believing in the higher worth of Colonial civilization and ability of people to do the correct and honorable thing and he became nearly suicidal when it became apparent that this was not the case (i.e., Laura authorizing the assassination of Cain).

[As an aside it just dawned on my why the Laura-Cain thing affected Lee so badly. Lee has always felt guilt over the downing of the Olympic Carrier, but I think he was able to justify it to himself that if the leaders and society at large continued to act honorably then some major losses were justifiable. However, now that in his view the leaders and society was not living up to his ideals he was left to question for what reason he potentially murdered over 1000 people.]

Anyway, when he recovered his senses a bit, he managed to muddle through by focussing on a more practical matters dictated by military command. Slowly, however, he began to regain his idealism and his tolerance for the strictures of military life. This first manifested itself in a belief in the “system” where he was willing to fight for Baltar’s right to a fair trial. His testimony however demonstrated that while he believed in an ideal system, he had yet to regain his faith in his fellow humans. Remember he was just calling the remaining Colonials a “gang” that had made many mistakes. I think Romo knew that Lee could only be an effective president (he is not going to be a manipulator like Zarek) if he had regained his idealism in its entirety, not only in the rule of law but also in humanity at large. I also think at that time that Romo had to hear that for his own therapy. I suspect there may be some John Nash (A Beautiful Mind) in Romo in that he has some serious mental disorders, but is genius enough to consciously or subconsciously know what he needs to do to manage them. Therefore, the confrontation allowed Lee to see for himself that he had regained his prior idealism, and the resulting speech enabled Romo to get his own head out of his ass (so to speak, sorry Barb)…

Great analysis. On another board someone suggested that the gun pulling was maybe an act by Romo to make Lee believe in himself and see the obvious. Personally I like that notion because it keeps that idea of Romo being a step ahead of everyone, and this time he was a step ahead of us the audience. Still though it doesn’t fix the fact that the Romo/Lee story really hurt the other awesome plots by taking up space.
