I am not excited about Glee anymore. I haven’t watched the finale yet since I am at work but honestly after ‘Funk’, I was about to say bye bye to this show. I loved the first half of the season. The last 9 eps have been meh to bad for me. It feels like TPTB are trying too hard to make the plot fit the music and not the music fit the plot. I hope they stop doing the artist theme shows. No offense to Madonna and Lady Gaga, in my opinion it feels contrived and overproduced. I’m not very Gleeful right now
don’t give up on the finale, it’s pretty sweet.
The 3 themed episodes in 1.5 weren’t great, but there were awesome episodes, like the one where Artie dreamed about dancing and Kurt sang Rose’s Turn. That episode in 1.5 is actually my favorite in the whole first season.
yeah, that match was pretty awesome. All three 3 pieces were wonderful and I love how they showed them in a row like a real performance.
I am loving Sue more and more. What she did in the voting room was very moving and powerful.
Bohemian Rhapsody combined with Quinn is brilliant. I actually thought they did a great job on that song. If i get that version song from itunes, i am sure it’d sound 10 times better than the way it was on screen.
But i get what you are saying about somebody to love. ND really made that song their own.
i don’t get how when the music business frequently “samples” others works, that they can’t allow others to do mashups. But at least with the show, they are run by studio that will negotiate for the rights.
anyway, if you haven’t seen the finale, you really need to see it. i am pretty amazed by the lack of discussion about the finale… so i am still in spoiler free mode…
Most high schools, OTOH, are not.
I loved the finale! (So please do give it a chance) It moved me to tears several times. I think Jane Espenson said it best, that this show wears it heart on its sleeve. Which is refreshing in a world where most shows pride themselves on being cynical and above it all.
And even though I’ve been out of high school for many, many years, it’s still so easy to identify with these kids (Tina talking about her 2 Facebook friends). And with Emma. Being a part of something special, having someone to believe in you – heck, I’d give anything to have that now.
The judges’ scene with Josh Groban and Olivia Newton-John was hilarious and yet cringe-worthy. It’s great that they can show the human side of Sue even while she’s being Will’s archnemesis. See, even she cried during their rendition of “To Sir, With Love.”
i rewatched the finale again. the second time through i had more time to chew on what’s going on. i think season 1 finale isn’t as powerful as the fall finale, mostly because it did not feature a cliff hanger. and the Will and Emma drama was more power the first time around.
but it is one solid finale style episode. it has a lot of heart. the acting by the main cast were emotion filled and amazing. The musical number were wonderful. While some didn’t like the Quinn maxing with the Bohemian Rhapsody, I loved it. I thought it made the situation more entertaining and we didn’t spend time just watching her suffer.
The focus of the episode, weirdly, was on Sue. Because she is the one that had a breakthrough. While I worry about if her hostility will still be taken seriously next season, I thought Sue was brilliant the entire episode.
Somehow, Sue has become the character with the most depth in the whole show. Isn’t that twisted?
Okay so if I’m reading this right - the author is stating that if Glee were real, they’d be violating copyright laws with the mashups - right? They aren’t saying that the show itself is because I assume the producers get permission from the artists…right?
If my assumption is correct - if high school students perform a song and they don’t charge admission - that does not violate copyright laws…or is it if they don’t perform for an audience?
Common misperception. They avoid some penalties, but they still incur copyright violations.
The game is rigged.
it is an unfair system, though in reality the record companies aren’t going to sue high school glee clubs right? i mean how are they going to benefit from doing that? though it is evil to have rules that allows it to be potentially abused.
Back from vacation and finally watched the Glee finale. I was pleased with the all of it, most especially Quinn’s birth scene and how it was cut with VA’s performance of BR. The scene with Quinn and Puck looking at the baby and agreeing to give her up was touching and earnest. My only complaint is that it would have been a hell of lot more interesting if Quinn’s mom left the dad because she missed her daughter, not because of the affair.
I read in TV Guide that John Stamos will play the dentist that Emma is involved with. I’m looking forward to next season. There’s a ton of gossip about diva behavior on the set though. Hope the cast holds it together. Fast fame is a rough ride.

Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one who liked that scene. Yeah, maybe they could have muted the hospital sounds, and just have VA’s audio. But I don’t think it ruined the scene. Having the hospital sounds makes me laugh, it’s clever I think. Anyway, cutting between the two with or without sound is way better than having each on their own.
yeah, i would have loved to see Quinn’s mom left the dad for her and not because he is cheating as well. That would have been much more powerful. If her mom only wants to be apart of her life simply because she doesn’t want to be alone, I wish Quinn said no.
I heard talks about having a non-ridiculous conservative Christian religious type on the show to balance it out, because they made fun of the ridiculous conservative type a couple of times. I wonder if that is going to be Quinn’s mom…
^ I read that it’s more of a teenage Carrie Underwood that they want to add to the “student” cast. Someone at the same talent level as Rachel but who isn’t afraid to express their Christian views. Which is fine as long as that’s not the sole point of the character.
Just wanna point out that all those storys about copyright violations are FALSE. According to Entertainment Weekly, all artists & record labels sign over the rights for a flat “scale” fee for the rights to cover the song & sell the cover version on itunes. So far everyone who’s done this had made buttloads of money because their original song sells like crazy too. If you watched itunes after the last episode, all five of the Glee albums were in the top twenty along with “The Best of Journey.” The only exception to this is Coldplay who decided not to let them cover one of their songs (As of three weeks ago EW said they have gotten permission to use EVERY song they asked for except Coldplay!). So far they have gotten permission to use over 700 songs and they are writing them into the scripts as needed. All these “articles” about copyright violations are from bloggers who see the popularity of Glee and want to make money on Amazon adsense adverts when Glee fans flock to their hypothetical article. Don’t trust blogs, trust reputable publications.
Hrm? I’m not sure what Entertainment Weekly’s point is. Nobody is saying that the producers of Glee were violating copyrights. What they’re saying that if the events shown took place at an actual high school, it would be liable for copyright violations (unless they paid a bunch of fees.) Similarly, some of the depictions of viral videos within the show would be subject to DMCA takedowns.
Don’t trust entertainment magazines, trust reputable blogs.
My question is - how would the “powers that be” even know about an average high school in Ohio doing covers of Madonna songs? I mean I guess if a Sue Silvester like person reported them but - what possible benefit could come from them going after a bunch of high school students?
youtube? the problem is the retroactive ability of the record companies to hunt down the performers if they ever becomes a hit on TV or internet.
I remember right after Glee got popular, there was a couple of talk shows that invited real glee clubs to perform for the cast members. I wonder how the copyrights are solved there. By the talk show maybe?
Never underestimate them. ASCAP just sued a bunch of venues for having, e.g., jukeboxes without paying the appropriate tribute. The Girl Scouts have been threatened (they sing campfire songs, after all.) In the UK it’s even crazier, with farmers being threatened for playing music to calm their animals.
Almost certainly. The laws are written from an early twentieth century understanding of how media works, and legacy companies are well versed in how to navigate them (they still end up suing each other, but that’s sorta different.)
Here in Oklahoma we had a kid that went viral doing a piano cover of Lady Gaga at his school talent show - and he now has a record deal. I don’t see them going after him…mostly because I think public reaction would be off the charts negative…and when I was in high school we always had people who performed pop or rock hits - though to be fair when I was in high school we didn’t have Youtube…
