Forgotten Sci-fi

I remember Space 1999 when I was a kid. For kids like me starving for sci fi, it was unresistable. I felt the same way about Earth 2 when it came out—not bad when there wasn’t a whole lot of other sci fi TV to be had—aside from Trek.

And Dark Star? Oh my gods, what a great dark comedy depicting the truth of space travel—travelling through space is long and boring and will drive you insane.

Saw it when I was young. Here’s what I remember.
“Antwerp.”
Aliens similar to Monty Python’s interstellar Blancmanges.
Either Psycho-analysis or Hypnotism (kinda fuzzy memory here)
And that I thought it was really good at the time.

Just picked it up. Looking for the time to watch it. It’s behind Henson’s Storyteller series, VIP My Brother Superman, Ratatouille, Happy Feet and a full Prisoner rewatch. (It’s bumping Burton’s Choco-Chuck, Spidy 3, Shrek 3, Heroes rewatch & the Simpson’s flick)

Dark Star…2001 A Space Odyssey for stoners. Great movie.

One of my all-time favorite MST3Ks.

I haven’t read the whole thread yet, so shoot me if anyone had already mentioned these two gems that I enjoyed VERY much as a kid!

Name Change

I have been known here in the past as “jjbauer5618” but I am changing that as of now. I will no longer be using that profile and am now going to use “Joey Pizza”. I tried to just change the name but that isnt possible so I am creating an entirely new profile. I will be subscribing to most of the threads that I currently belong to so I hope this doent cause any problems for anyone I have been in contact with.

How about the War of the Worlds TV series? Very dark and very cool.
Then there’s my favorite obscure sci-fi series, Otherworld. The basic premise is that a family vacationing in Egypt gets pulled through a gateway to another world that is controlled by an oppressive regime.

I used to watch both of those series.

Heh, The War of the Worlds TV series, I had forgotten all about that, it was a good show!

Whilst not SF, the Friday the 13th series that was on at the same time was also excellent, ahead of it’s time I thought (and very little to do with the series of films of the same name).

The War of the Worlds TV series is out on DVD now.

Ooo, Friday the 13th, I forgot about that! Good stuff.

What about the 1996 Flash Gordon? No one ever seems to remember that one, maybe cos the lizard Ming was so bad.

There was a 1996 Flash Gordon?

New one on me!

PROOF!!

Flash on a rocket skateboard?

Kinda glad I missed that one, heh.

That was a great one! I always recall the wise Sleestak called Enoch. Loved that as a kid. Not as creepy as HR Puffinstuff, or Lidsville …or the evil Bugaloos!

I’m guessing you mean the seventies version and not the nineties version. I loved it too. Enik was a fave of mine as well.

There’s also a film in the works.

Loved the show. The nicknamed animated dinosaurs, Chaka, the Pylons with the glowing control crystals… And yes, Enoch the time-traveling evolved sleestak rocked.

But also gotta admit loving the trippy H.R.P., and especially Charles Nelson Reilly’s acting (pre-matchgame) on Lidsville.
(Later on I thought he and Dr. Smith would make a fun couple.)
Then again, I was a Sat. morn junky, and I watched pretty much everything the Kroft’s did (except the boring Bugaloos) including Sigmund and even their non-puppet “Supershow” with Electra-woman & Dyna-girl, Wonderbug and Dr. Shrinker.

I’m hoping Will Ferrell’s Land of the Lost will do what they did with the dinosaurs in the Ringo Starr’s uber-stupid Caveman and make them funny, not just something to run away from.

Let’s hear it for “The Magic Garden!” the trippiest of children’s television

“This is the garden of make-believe,
A magical garden of make-believe,
Where flowers chuckle and birds play tricks,
And a magic tree grows lollipop sticks!”

Here are some more:

The Powers of Matthew Star - with Louis Gossett Jr. I watched that dumb show!

Whatever happened to the “Tomorrow People”. It was a hippy British show about kids who had advanced mental powers and teleportation.

OK, who remembers Ultraman???
