"Fitness Club" Thread

I’ve had 3 crazy days of work - worked 12 hours on tuesday so no work out, then flew to Knoxville TN for a job interview and was there for only about 15 hours then flying back and another long day at work, so in addition to not working out, eating poorly too, and not getting enough sleep. And I fly again tomorrow.

But I did get a verbal offer…

did my four miles this afternoon, weather was awful, it rained almost the whole time while being hot and muggy, my time was awful, i’ say almost 90 minutes, i want to get it down to my brisk 15 minute walking miles I will get there, but I sweated buckets and feel quite happy.

Will do this again tomorrow and over the next three days while I’m off work.

lame question, wolverines. anybody know of an iPhone app that I can record my trainer’s instructions, e.g., machine #, sets, reps, weight, resting activity, workout schedule, etc? I did a search that was far from extensive with no luck. yes, I could just carry the paper around with me, but I feel like a dork, and my trainer has crappy handwriting

I stick that info in the Notes section of MND’s app. Then when I go in to do a similar day I just cut/paste it in from the last day and modify it as I go (different times/weights/etc). Bonus: If you run the “daily summary” report it shows up there. (Running that report to Excel is how I capture that info for the report I posted a while back.)

But FWIW I carried the paper around for prolly six months. Somewhere around the one year point it got easy to remember everything. But before that I just carried the paper. One small plus: carrying the paper indicates you’re working with a trainer, which people respect. (It’s not the n00b tell it seems.)

Well, I got my elliptical last Saturday, and out of the 7 days, I used it 6 of them (15 minutes a time, with a total of 30 minutes on Sunday). And during that time, I just finished the BSG miniseries. Tomorrow I start on 33 and will hopefully do 30 minutes on it.

Tuesday’s always going to be my day off, but now that I’m starting in on a routine, it’s time to dig out my scale and start using it tomorrow.

Go for 33 minutes, Starsaber! The episode begs for it.

I always remember that as the episode that EJO apparently kept telling the director that people should be committing suicide from a lack of sleep. I think Ron Moore said that on his podcast.

Work was rough this week, and I only got 2 workouts in, but I’ve promised myself to work out Sat and Sun to get my 4 workouts in. I did pretty good with my eating (except for two pints of porter that put me over the top yesterday). I never realized how often I had 2 or 3 beers until I started logging my food.

Well, if I do some cooldown after each 15 minutes, I might reach that

'm nowhere near you folks, I cannot run, seriously, I’ve had both PT and medical opinion on this, my knees are screwed up from being repeatedly hit by cars in the 90s, they will not take the impact and if I try and road running I’ll be barely able to walk, trust me I’ve gone there (not an excuse, accepting the abuse my body has taken).

I can (and do) however walk, I know it’s not he intense cardio vascular workouts you folks do but it’s working on weight loss plus I feel exercised and happily endorphins and exhausted after.

I’ve read up a little about fitness walking, and I believe that it can be just as good for your body as running, and fortunately it’s not as hard on the body.

I got a pair of those Shape Ups from Sketchers. They add like 1.5 inches to my already tall frame but they’re great at sneaking in workouts all day long. And if you walk a couple miles in them you FEEL it.

I’d like to jog, but I know it can be terrible on your knees and back.

FWIW, I’m totally not a runner either–and you definitely don’t need to run in order to get in shape. Walking is fine. The elliptical is even better, IMO, because used vigorously (with arm paddles) it gives a burn similar to running without all the impact.

Struggling to get out of bed right now. New circuit training workout Thurs still hurts like hell. :frowning:

thanks guys, the supportive messages really do help, as anyone who follows me on twitter will know, I’ve started timing my weekend walks, it’s hilly and urban walking which means i encounter delays when crossing roads etc (usually not much over a minute though) once I get this consistently down to below an hour, or after three weeks I’ll be tacking on the extra 3 mile loop I can add. I’m aware that although I can do 4 miles in around an hour I get tired over the 7 mile distance and it tends towards being closer to two hours.

I’m resisting the urge to weigh myself these past couple of days so will weigh myself on scheule tomorrow morning, will let you know overall and weekly weight change to date.

editing rather than double posting. I indulged myself over the past few days and it shows, 1.2 kilo (or roughly 2 1/2 pounds) gain from Wed weight of 104.4 up now to 105.6, not feeling great but I’m blaming the take away last night plus cider).
I will get back on track, report in again weight wise in 10 days as I’m away next weekend, it’s a marathon, not a sprint and I know I’ll have good and bad weeks.

Well, not sure if I’ll get two times in on the elliptical today because I just got done sleeping for 3 more hours, but I did weigh myself during my first time awake this morning to get a starting baseline, and it’s not quite as bad as I thought it would be. I currently weigh 287.4 lbs.

My plan at the moment is to focus on my exercise routine for this first month or so (because I’ll be travelling for half a week in May), then start a more concerted effort to change my eating habits. That’s going to be the tricky part because I try pretty often, but it never really sticks.

I had a great workout yesterday, despite getting the shot in my foot on Friday. And I can tell that I’m getting better at cycling long distances because my ass doesn’t hurt today–good for me!

Later today I am going to do some core work and shoulders, but no more cardio until tomorrow.

My foot is doing pretty well. I did walked almost 2 miles today in the process of doing errands and it’s a little sore but mostly alright. Will be icing it this evening.

Also, dinner tonight is red beans and brown rice. Healthy and delicious!

No buses today, so I’ve done a lot of walking in my Easter finery :stuck_out_tongue:

Hence, no yoga for today. But I’ve been keeping up with it well though my hip feels a bit off. I think I may have slept on it oddly.

Gooooo team!

well look at me, I had birthday cake AND easter poppy seed tort today =O

just gotta get back on track this week! hope everyone had a great holiday/weekend

If there ever were a reason to take a day off of the nutritional end of fitness, your birthday is that reason! Happy bday and good luck in the coming week!

In other news, it will be tough for me to get through a DC summer without my constant companion, gin and tonic with lime. It might be even harder than getting used to life sans beer. Thankfully, muddled blackberries with lime juice and seltzer is delicious. But it’s no G&T.

Joined a gym! It’s a 24HR Supersport, so it’s frakkin’ huge! Lap pool, separate classrooms for yoga, spinning, etc., a basketball court…and of course 8 bazillion pieces of equipment. Kind of overwhelming, truthfully!

Been working my way through all the equipment, checking it out. Needless to say, I’ve been very sore this week.

So I’ve been breaking the couple of hours I spend there between treadmill and weight training. I must’ve overdone it on the Hoist machines on the first day, my arms have been wiped out all week! Yesterday I kicked down the weight a little and was able to do my sets and when I was done everything actually loosened up and felt great. And lots of stretching before and after made a big difference too.

I’ll be going back through this thread now with an eye for seeing what y’all have been doing at the gym specifically.

WOLVERINES!

Glad to see everyone is maintaining so far  I have been doing just that but just now realised that the Warrior Dash that I signed up for is just under 3 weeks away so I’ll have to step up my training if I want to be competitive for that race.

Has anyone ever done a race of this type? It’s just over 3 miles with obstacles randomly placed. (Just for showing up, you get a viking helmet which was a big reason why I finally signed up for it.)

That sounds like an amazing gym, btw! I wish there was a gym here that I would swim laps, I’ve never done them before but hear that they’re great for a whole body workout and cardio at the same time and easier on the knees/legs/back. Make use of it for me!

this sounds like the kind of incentive that I respond to!
