Indeed. You can totally do it. I started at 270 lbs, btw, so don’t feel bad. Food logging will definitely help as good nutrition provides the basis of fitness.
thank you kind chuck, I’m aiming to as I’ve said, drop around 50 pounds or so. I want to be a much lesser man at the next meet up

I ate everything this weekend. I ate it all.
this is a lie because I ate it all FIRST
well no I really didn’t eat a lot this weekend…but drank way too much beer…probably worse than overeating
Even the babies?
I’ve started working with a trainer and it’s (so far) exactly what I wanted: she’s mixing it up in ways that I just don’t do when left to my own devices. She has me try doing things that I wouldn’t have thought would be practical/comfortable/achievable but they are. Well, not always comfortable, but achievable, at least. And ultimately satisfying.
I still don’t really like working out in front of other people. Yeah, I know, I am a faithful gym-goer. But this preference for fitness solitude is the reason that I love that we all now wear our iPods or plug into the TV speakers at the gym. Working with Hanna, I’m not as isolated from the other folks around me. The other day this guy who honestly didn’t look like he had it in him waltzed into the classroom where she and I were working and proceeded to jump rope across the room one footed (hopping) at a rather fast pace. Back and forth, back and forth. It was both distracting and somehow intrusive. I gave him an impressive death glare. He did not notice.
Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?
Other than that, it’s been a good week fitness-wise. I should not have eaten the popcorn at the theater yesterday and I should have eaten more veggies today but otherwise successful. Heading to the gym again tomorrow evening–first night in a new schedule.
Will post progress on Tuesday evening after the weekly check-in.
Well I’ve finished the challenge on another fitness forum and at the end I lost a total of 25lbs which is good, the bodyfat is going and I’m fitting into decent sized clothes.
The mindset is good and getting better although there are times when I do doubt myself and it does get confusing with the whole ‘Am I eatting enough’ but I’ve consistently lost weight since July 2010 so I know that I can do it.
I hit the better stocked gym over the weekend and it felt so good doing bench, dead lifts and presses with decent weight. I’m also thinking about hiring a trainer for a session - She’s competed in shows before so she’ll be a good one that knows how to achieve goals in a practical sense.
I know know that my limits on the big lifts are
Deadlifts - 100kg for 10 reps
Bench - 60kg for 10, 70kg for 2 reps
Military Press - 35kg for 10 reps
Handstand pushups are getting better, I can now do 5 1" pushups, just have to keep working on going all the way to the floor and back up.
Phaze - We’ll be here for you, but it’s all about the diet mainly. You need to figure out your BMR and then you calorific burn. You then need to figure out how much you want to lose - for starters, go for a 500 deficit each day, that should give you a 1lb loss every week.
Ensure that you drink alot of water and make sure that you get your healthy fats in, some good carbs and of course the protein.
In terms of exercise - it’s all about movement - so if in the gym and it’s your first time, just concentrate on full body routines, compound movements that work your whole body
Squats and their variations
Bench Press
Push Press
Deadlifts
Farmers Walks
Planks
I’m sure we can find you a routine.
Also make sure you log your calories so you can keep a track of how you are doing. Actually look up Stronglifts 5X5 program - It’s pretty simple and should knock the weight off. Also don’t forget your NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Time) - It does add up.
Drop me a PM - No expert but I can tell you what worked for me. (I started at 280lbs - 20 stone and now I’m 15 stone 2lbs.
Well just back from the gym and have just tucked into a Jamaican beef patty with swede mash and carrots and peas. Very very nice :). My calories have come in around the 1300 mark (plus 5-10% for error) and my protein is around the 130g so it’s getting better The fat is 15g and the carbs are around the 50g mark. I didn’t mean to have the fat so low so I’m going to have to work on that a bit better to get the healthy fats
Workout is as follows:
DB Bench Press - 2x12 @ 24kg (A new pb - felt strong and only failed on the last rep of the second set).
DB Deltoid Raise - 2x10 @ 6kg
Push-up Scap Shrug - 2x10
Incline Dumbelll Bench Press (Alternating) - 2 x 12 @ 14kg.
Then did cardio for 25 minutes - Feeling good at energised.
The gym was packed - I thought that it would have died off by now but it seems that people are determined this year. It’s cool though, it’s getting to the point where I recognise people and the staff/other gym members recognise me.
I’m probably not the best one to ask, there’s a reason I stopped going to the gym and started exercising at home but I know exactly what you mean, I use to have certain people at the gym that made it a point to stare at other people while they worked out, would give them the glare of death and they’d stop staring at me for maybe 5 minutes before they start again
but like as they would walk by people they’d turn their head at you and keep it locked on you as they walked by, drove me nuts especially when I would catch it out of the corner of my eye while lifting something
@bm as with others here, sb included i’m not really good at the whole gym thing at at my current weight even stretching causes muscle cramps, until i drop below 100 kilos/220 pounds i’m gonna stuck with wii fit and ea sports active but initial plans are to quit drinking and start walking in to work again - it’s just under two miles and a lot of up and down hil stuff.
when i get down to around 90 kilos or so i’ll go back to the pilates classes, i enjoy half killing myself with women, the ones in my palates class make audra seem like a nun, honestly some of the comments, embarrassed even this foul mouthed Irishman.
it’s a long journey, i don’t want to bulk up, just lose weight so the whole reps/weight thing isn’t for me I’d rather be toned than have muscles to show off.

My 2 year old SIGG metal water bottle has seen better days. It is now so dented from falling on the garage floor that it won’t even stand upright without wobbling. So I find myself in the water bottle market once again. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m a big fan of the Camelbak bottles. Sure, they’re a little like adult sippy cups – Michaela accurately and appropriately identifies mine as such regularly – but they’re awesome: They hold a full liter (or 750ml if you get the smaller one), they’re pretty much impossible to spill, and you don’t have to keep removing and reinstalling the cap all day.
I got a couple stainless steel water bottles for 2 bucks a piece on sale at Menards one day…I’m sure if you look around you can find some decent ones for cheap
unless theres some kind of designer water bottle market out there I’m not familiar with…which there probably is
The Camelbak bottles are good quality if you like the design. I’m more of a classic Nalgene guy myself, but if you like stainless check out Kleen Kanteen bottles. They even have a few different types of tops.
Water bottle not really an issue for me, at this early excercise stage i’m either doing wii fit at home (which means a glass balanced on the mantlepiece) or walking for under 25 mins a ta time (Whihc means empty orange soda/coke bottle refilled from filtered water fountain in work).

Havent signed in for a while, so thought i’d post a progress report.
Had some issues due to too much alcohol at a convention, then getting sick for a week, then going to another convention, and staying sick another week… lol…but i’m back at things now after life gave me a detour and happy to say i’m still losing weight, though a bit slower now due to 2 1/2 weeks of no exercise.
As of this morning, i checked in at 314. So as i said, slowed down considerably, but i did eat not as healthy as i should have while i was sick and had no exercise at all, so i am happy to have lost anything at all. Anyways, feeling better now and have no excuses not to get back on track.
My three year old SIGG is in terrible shape and along with wobbling it leaks because I dented the lip. About 6 months ago I replaced it with a Clean Canteen, which I LOVED. It was even better than my SIGG. Sadly, I lost it on the bus one day. Because I am lazy, I am back to lugging my leaky old bottle everywhere. It was recently thrown in the trash by security guards at the Capitol and covered in smelly banana peel, but a kind custodian rescued it for me and after a soak in boiling water it’s good as… well, it’s clean.
I also tried a Camel Back but really did not like it. I found the sipping to be quite annoying. And, perhaps because I’m a biter, the sippy part developed a leak within 6 months.
Of course, when I say I carry my bottle everywhere, I mean it. It goes everywhere with me, usually in my purse, where it can roll around a bit. Work, gym, out on weekends, doing errands, whatever. I have my water bottle. If you use yours less and are not a biter, a Camel Back might be good for you.
I’ve decided that I’m going to use part of my income tax refund to get an elliptical for at home to remove a couple of my exercise avoidance excuses. I’m aiming for the $4-600 range. Does anyone have any tips?
Oh, if you were concerned at all about BPA and thus switched from a Nalgene to aluminum/stainless steel, Nalgene is now BPA-free. Pretty much everyone is now, I think.
On the other hand, the metal bottles are more sustainable/enviro friendly and they seem to start smelling weird less frequently.
other than heading to a few stores and trying out to see which one you like best nope!
keep in mind the ones you see at the gym are typically in the 3k range (or at least the ones at my old gym were when I looked up the same brand/model) so the ones you see in the store in that range won’t have as many gadgets but they’ll get the job done
