Fan remade Star Wars

I searched but didn’t find any mention of it, so I figure I’ll post something. There’s a project going on right now to re-film Star Wars, once scene at a time. It’s called Star Wars:Uncut, and you sign up and pick a 15 second scene from the movie to re-film completely. There are a few hundred already done, and a bunch left as well.

I’ve signed up for Scene 259:

Today, I borrowed a Millenium Falcon model and set up a quick diorama at work in an empty cube and took some pictures, now I’m converting it into my ‘matte’ background picture.

My current plan is to dress my kids as Storm Troopers and use green-screen to composite the video of them into all of the stormtrooper roles here, then do the same for one of them as Vader and the other as Officer Cooldude (my nickname for the guy who reports that the ship is empty).

Anyone else participating in this? If so, show us your scenes! If not, this would be a real fun project to consider joining. You know the source material, now’s your chance to make your own version.

Quick update, I’ve taken some pics and did a little tweaking for my matte painting for part of the scene:
(Still a work in progress, I’m adding more farkles to the scene to make it slightly less like an empty cubical and slightly more hangarlike)

I’ll composite the kids onto this.

Here’s the original:

Damn, that looks good, Screech.

Oh crap, of all the nicknames I might have acquired with this handle, ‘Screech’ is not one I had planned for.

Oh boy.

What Pike said… that’s looking awesome so far! Good luck!

I think we just found your callsign…

So, anyone else want to join and do their own scenes? It’s fun!

I think this project is a great idea, I cant wait to see the results.

Screech, well done. Well done, indeed.

Here are my semi-final mattes, I want to concentrate on filming:

I did some stormtrooper test footage with my 5 year old today, but was totally lazy and didn’t use our greenscreen, so I need to set it up and do better, heh.

You are my hero. eyelash flutter AbsoStormtrooperlutely OSSIM!!

LOVE the Solo cups.

I thought they’d be appropriate.

So, c’mon folks! Let’s get some a good GWC representation! Go sign up for a clip make some film!

Yeah, i was REALLY skeptical of this project, but the more I see, the more I like.

Here’s an early composite test, no sound and missing actors:

There are video artifacts, but I had to make do with my garage as a chroma-key target.

The stormtroopers are all static at the moment, but I’m hoping to switch to video composites, I was just have a hard time wrangling my 5 year old when I took the pictures, heh. Thank goodness for ‘Layers’ in my paint program, removing the troopers (if I need to) is as easy as conning a Starfleet Admiral.

For reference, here’s the original scene in a non-crummy presentation:

Finally finished. I realized that I could potentially spend months redoing things with stuff I had learned along the way (I didn’t have any real editing or fx experience before this so I made lots of mistakes), so I did a test render today after putting together the sound… and realized that it was done!

Well, as done as anything can be without me going fully anal-retentive and making it perfect at the expense of actually finishing it on time.

Added complications: Filming kids! The stormtrooper… was not cooperating, so he is now still still images. I wanted first-born to do the ramp and stuff, but we had some logistics problems that forced me to make do with some footage I collected elsewhere.

My greenscreen… was teh suck. I had to use it plus rotoscoping and… well, I mentioned that I’m still learning?

Anyhow, I’ll stop making excuses and just share my little 15ish seconds of the project:

Just signed up for a new scene:

Anyone have an X-Wing I can borrow?

Well done Thunderscreech! I love it! Good luck with the next one!
