Eve Online

Frigates are cheap. Rifters are very arguably the best pvp frigate in game. If you’ve got a wardec, enjoy it.

Takes a bit to train if it’s outside your race though.

My old alliance recommended drakes or flying what you could afford.

I obviously got the wrong set up. What fit would you recommend?

I’m only asking because I’m a casual noob.

The Drake Army is kinda the flavor of the month. Although with current game mechanics, Minamatar/Amarr is the way to go for pvp. The notes from the last CSM says they’re going to ‘balance’ hybrids soon, so maybe you’ll see rails in fleets again.

Plus there’s the old Eve rule about not undocking in anything you can’t afford to lose:)

Dunno if anyone is affected, but…

TL;DR: CPUs that don’t support the SSE2 instruction set will not be able to run EVE Online after the Incursion 1.1.0 deployment on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. This will cause players still using Intel Pentium 3 or older and AMD Athlon XP or older CPUs to not be able to run the EVE Online client. Athlon 64 CPUs are not affected.

During the testing of Incursion 1.1.0 we received reports of a seemingly random issue that caused the client to crash on startup. While some of our Singularity testers reported the issue, we weren’t able to replicate it. The error log that was generated didn’t prove to be helpful, and due to the extremely few reports we received on it, we couldn’t take the investigation further.

In an epiphany moment, a diligent tester figured out that some of the third party binaries we use to run EVE Online had been updated recently. Looking further into the issue, we found that a feature had been turned on that used the SSE2 instruction set and the unexpected fallout was that non-SSE2 capable CPUs became incompatible.

We’ve looked at hardware trend reports and the general status of the market and this obsolete generation of CPUs in desktop computers and gaming rigs is nearly extinct. We estimate that around 0.3% of the playerbase will be affected. We have, therefore, decided to not let this block the deployment of Incursion 1.1.0. An info message that pops up when you start the client on a non-SSE2 capable machine has been added for clarification. We urge everyone who encounters this specific error to submit a petition to our customer support department. We will have updates on the next steps we take with this issue immediately after the weekend but we wanted to get a blog up ASAP to inform everyone about the issue.

Cheers,

CCP Zulu

Kinda funny. I use a P4 AGP computer for one of my clients. Looks like it only has a year of use left if not less.

I wish they gave people more lead time though…

Edit:
P.S. Long skill queue. Set one.

I like the part where it basically says “our logs show nothing”

I was starting to wonder if:

Incarna Expansion - “Crash to Desktop” hits you for “$1000 to upgrade your PC”

“$1000 PC upgrade” is shot down by “Your Wife” - EVE is out of (your) control

… Crom, I hope I’m not in the “0.3%”. I’m on the same PC I started EVE with, it’s now a little over 3yrs old.

I guess I should try to get on SiSi to see if I can get through the new character creation.

Well, if you’re frakked on that, I am too. My computer is a bit over 4 years old, and car is a higher priority at the moment. Plus, I just reactivated my account for 3 months on Saturday.

my P4 is 6 years old and is safe (afaik).

As the quote says, “Intel Pentium 3 or older and AMD Athlon XP or older CPUs” are affected. So, if your CPU are newer than either of those, you are fine. If you bought or put together your pc within the last 4 years (and had a newish CPU installed) you should be fine.

I’m worried about Incarna though. I fear that expansion will make both my PCs unable to play EVE.

Yeah, there’s a lot of rage on the forums about the lack of notice. I do hope CCP somehow compensates those in the 0.3% (free SP bonus and whatnot).

Mine’s 3 yrs old and I’m running an AMD Athlon64 2.2 dual core with 2 Nvidia 7300GT video cards. The character creator on Sisi lagged pretty hard until I turned all the settings down to low:(
I fear (hope) a computer upgrade is in my future this spring.

Athlon 64 are automatically immune. Maybe I should use bold?

Athlon 64 CPUs are not affected.

I read it and understand, I’m just saying that firing up the character creator on my machine lagged so bad I was unable to actually create the character until everything was on low.
To me, that says my rig won’t like the summer expansion. Especially if it’s Incarna.

Oh ok.

I have a laptop that’s 2 years old, but it’s running Vista and is slow as molasses. So, if I’m in a pinch, I’ll be ok. But, like most people, I’d prefer having a more recent, dedicated gaming rig.

Yay, my P4 system does indeed work. d:

I haven’t tried the character creator yet. Some ppl are having issues on the forum.

The new route UI is great!

So you don’t have to do the character creator right away? Good. If I have time to log in at all, I’m probably only going to do PI (and they were updating that too, right?).

You know, with all the extra of one of my subproducts, I should probably just not run those extractors until I run down the surplus.

I think I remember reading somewhere that you have a little time (30days maybe) but I could be making that up.

Nope, you’re right. There’s a waiver for using the creator and messing up. You can petition to have it undone for 30 days. There’s speculation on the forums that CCP may patch the creator, so I’m waiting a bit.

It’d be really nice if we could save our progress without finalizing. I gave up on what I was going for, because I’m not very good at doing faces, but I had to save to avoid losing what I did manage. I’ll probably end up petitioning, especially if they patch the creator.

A note on the new character creator

Hello all,

I wanted to clear up some confusion players have been having regarding the new character creator and the grace period.

When you play around with the new character creator, during the portrait view, when you create your portrait, you are given the opportunity to take four snapshots. Please keep in mind that when you take these pictures, only the highlighted one is used by the client and EVE Gate. Please do not accept your portrait unless you are 100% satisfied with how it looks! And if you blink, simply take a new picture.

If you do wind up looking all sorts of weird, and you aren’t at all happy with how you look, you are welcomed to file a petition, but please do not abuse this courtesy. With the release of EVE Online: Incursion 1.1.0, our customer support team will be handling a lot of petitions in the short term, and you can help by ensuring that your portrait is exactly as you want it before you finalize the way you look.

There has also been a little confusion about what exactly the grace period refers to. For the next several weeks, we are allowing players to choose whether or not they would like to use the character creator immediately, or to take some time, play with it, or consider how they want to design their gorgeous characters. It does not mean that you will be able to design and redesign your character after you’ve accepted your portrait.

We will be announcing the end of the grace period at a later date, and will provide plenty of notice. But once the grace period is over, you will have to use the new character creator to design your characters.

A fix is currently being worked on and should be implemented during downtime on Wednesday January 19, 2011. We apologize for any inconvience this may be cause you.

General Known issues:
New Character Creator by default selects the last screenshot of the character, instead of selected one. Keep this in mind when creating your new portrait!
Some players are unable to accept WTB contract.
After using the new character creator, players may find that their 3D scene is completely black but the UI is still visible.
Some players are unable to load the new character creator.
Some players may experience their desktop and screen stay dark after alt tabbing out of the EVE client. If you are experiencing this please run EVE as administrator and this should correct this issue.
Some character may appear different from the character selection screen to what appears in game.
Some players may experience that the shortcut tab in the ESC menu is blank.
Some players are unable to remove neutral pilots from the overview.

Some users may experience some speed issues with the new character creator feature, we recommend trying to changing some of these graphics settings:
Shader Quality – Setting this to low will have a drastic effect on the quality and availability of features in the character creator.

Low quality characters – This setting has minimal impact on the avatar itself, most noticeable effect is the reduced lighting and shadow effects.

Physically simulated cloth and hair – Disabling can have a drastic effect on performance.

Character creation texture quality – This has a pretty big impact on memory usage.

I’ll probably wait a couple days so the initial swarm of petitions have a chance to die down a bit.
