Dungeons and Dragons (d20 RPGS)

Painted figures are a the way to go. I’ve got neither the time, nor skill, nor patience to paint metal figures.

We’ve played Clue Jr. with them and they love it.

Funny thing, my friends and I had not played D&D for a long time–maybe 10 years maybe. And then my friend who used to be the one who always DMed when we played D&D, decided he wanted to play it again. We all dug out our our old characters sheets and books—and I’m talking AD&D 1st edition–copyright 1978—and we played with those old rules. Why? Because after so many many hours of playing when we were younger, those rules were just so ingrained—Amazingly it was like riding a bike–came back to us just that naturally.

Wow. That is so great!! The wheels are turning in my head. You’ve got me thinking that RPGs are more then good entertainment—they’re a must for good parenting!

I like playing 1st and 2nd ed. but I started playing on 3.0 rules so learning the THACO and etc. Which switched the AC from a really high number being good, to a negative number being good was confusing at first. But now that I’ve played the older editions I have fun with the differences in the systems.

Some of the best parent-chold relationships I know come from gaming parents who share that hobby with their kids.

I took Pike’s advice and checked out http://www.tlucretius.net/RPGs/kids.html And from that I went ahead and bought “Faery’s Tale: Deluxe Edition”. It seems like a perfect RPG to try out with my daughters. It’s Ages 6+, so that’s about right. Can’t wait to give it a tumble.

wooty woot woot. I also currently apologize if my posts over the next few hours are babbleing and incoherant. I’ve managed like 5 and half hours sleep in 2 days and I’m stuck at work for 6 more hours.

sighs I miss my old pen & paper D&D games, not played for years.

Used to play a few other RPGs too, including the Star Trek and Doctor Who RPGs, those were interesting.

These days my RPGing is limited to playing Neverwinter Nights online. Sometime it can be almost as good as the old days, but I miss doing the funny voices for my characters!

Public Service Announcement:
MMORPG’s are no substitute for table top RPing…the more you know…

What Star Trek RPG game system do you use? I used the one from FASA–and we got years and many sessions of enjoyment out of it.

We tried Doctor Who once but it wasn’t suited to our group. Having one player be the Doctor (or other Timelord) and the other’s being his companions wasn’t so fun for the companions.

Yes, we used the FASA one too.

Only played the Doctor Who RPG once, it wasn’t my style, at least not back then when I was at uni.

Hey guys can you help a brotha’ out. Id like to learn how to play, but I have no idea where/how. i have at least 1 confirmed friend to play, and a bunch of others who i think would play too. Do you guys know anywhere that has all the rules/eternal knowledge of the game?

Interesting.

I haven’t gamed in years (it requires getting people together face-to-face, which becomes harder and harder.) OTOH, there’s a lot more info out there than there was when I was doing it. I’d search for “Open Gaming License” and see what you can dig up. I’ll be looking at some of the less popular games that I enjoyed and seeing what I can turn up.

The best bet is to look around to see if you’ve got any local gaming stores. There should be some sort of D&D group that the store employees can recommend to help you start out-and with 4th edition coming out, Wizards of the Coast (the makers) have been sending kits to stores to help new players.

My best piece of advice is to keep it simple, buy the minimum you need to start out and see how things go. If things go well then you can invest more. Too many source books and you risk scaring off your players, and it’s a dent in the wallet!

I’d also suggest you search online for local gaming clubs, will be worth dropping by one to get a feel for things even if you don’t stick around.

eBay can be your friend in locating decent prices on source books.

Hey there,
I just want to say thanks for Pike for pointing me to that link, and to GothicJossMinion for her advice about RPGing with little kids.
I just received the Faery’s Tale RPG in the mail today, and it looks like the perfect game to try out with my 8 and 5 year old girls. Can’t wait to read the rules and start playing!

These are more table-top wargame than RPG but still designed for kids (and free and educational!).

I’ve also found a very cool RPG called “Realtime” that takes place in realtime (1 minute of time in the real world = 1 minute of game time). The web site is fiendishly hard to find, so I’ll have to post a link later when I get home from work. I would love to run a game using that system, but I haven’t been able to find a gaming group around here.

I played AD&D for hours on end with Middle school friends. One thing that always turned me off was how much “cheating” went on, getting gold or special weapons was easy. Just erase and add. Did have lots of fun.

When I went to college in Madison, I was one of the first with a computer. ( Apple II ) Did this device help me get A’s? NOPE. One semester I dropped 10 credits because I became addicted to Wizardry, Trebor and Werdna. Yea Dad wasn’t too happy. I still remember the day I killed Werdna. Screamed like a kid in a candy store that that just got a free sample of everything.

Later on (yes, I did eventually graduate) I played Bard’s Tale, which was a little more graphic then Wizardy. Never finished.

Like TFG, I have young kids who love to pretend. I might check out the RPGs as well, but quite honestly since the don’t watch TV, they usually make up their own!!!

I’m part way through reading the rules for the RPG I mentioned above: Faery’s Tale. So far it seems perfect for girls the age of mine. My plan is to be all prepared to play by the time we go away for summer vacation.

This conversation reminded me of this video. This thing always cracks me up!!!

I dunno if I am just getting burned out with D20 or what…
They need to stick with a D&D system and let it be that… I’ve read some of v.4.0 and it seems like it might be okay…The only trouble is…Do I bother with it…??

Personally, I am smart enough to correct any errors I feel 3.5 has… I didn’t wanna do 3.5 either, but all my friends changed over… I dont think they will this time because of how much money they spent on all the books…

Advice: Don’t let anyone in your group become a rules lawyer. The moment you do, they’ve murdered your fun forever…forever…forever…forever…

R-O-L-E play… Not R-O-L-L play…

I’ve become a recent convert to the Savage Worlds RPG. I love how streamlined it is. I also picked up 4th ed and really think they’ve made some great strides… I just think SW does it better and cheaper… one core book $9.99.
