Cool craaaaaap you've acquired/done lately

I made my first forage into Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I wanted to move in. I could spend oodles of dollars there. Limited myself to $40.

Bed Bath is all kinds of awesome

I don’t know how much this applies to this discussion, but I thought it would be covered under the “Cool Things you’ve done/acquired Lately” topic . . .

I am a doctoral student at University of Phoenix, and we have this online class about postmodernism and how it applies to the corporate business world. There is a thread where the topic digressed to the subject of mythology and the difference between what we percieve and how it affects us.

My classmate had the nerve to post something with a picture of Barney in it. so this is my reply:

"All,
"BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. . . . .
That “purple character” has changed my opinion about many things. At one point, I saw a picture where the person had taken a screen cap of a Jurassic Park scene, the one where the people are being chased by the T-Rex, and replaced the T-Rex using Photoshop, with a picture of our favorite “purple character.” They called their picture Jurassic Barney.

"Which leads me to wonder, what is to stop the general public and all the people who ‘control’ what we see and watch to say that the image of the dinosaurs is too violent and that all grade school teachers should teach that all dinosaurs were purple and friendly? This would lead to purple pterodactyls with high-pitched singing voices and purple brontosaurs with low, deep voices. They could all have been singers in some giant dinosaur choir and sailed away into the sunset, just like the Elves from Lord of the Rings.

“I think that how we see the past is tainted by how we perceive our present and where our future seems to be headed. I saw an interview on the extended version of the DVD for Lord of the Rings which said that some hold the story in such high esteem that they believe that someday it will be actually considered mythology from ancient England, even though J. R. R. Tolkien actually invented the story (complete with Elven languages). Will Lord of the Rings ever be considered more mythogically correct than Beowulf or . . . dare I say it . . . the Bible? That could be a scary thought!”

I just thought my GWC friends might get a kick out of this!

Oh man! That last paragraph has me all kinds of excited, Ethan. I actually think that, indeed, things like LOTR and (especially) Star Wars and Star Trek may one day become folk myths and even evolve into religions (didn’t some citizens of Australia and the UK put “Jedi” down as their religion in the most recent censuses there?).

And, from Futurama, we know that this will lead to the great Star Trek Wars and the Star Wars Trek.

His story sounds a great deal like yours. Except that his family who was very confused did not disown him. The mom knows her ignorance caused her son pain. I stopped watching when she was asked about the danger of his surgery. She said that if he was taken during the surgery it would be better than having him live like he is now. She understood his pain but still was very conflicted with guilt of the pain she caused him for not understanding.

So how is the new toy working?

Doesn’t show 'til Monday. :frowning:

I can see that it’s hurt her Mum, and I know that the guilt can be immense for some parents (not mine, but a few of my friends) and, well, they accept their new daughter, and that’s amazing.

her family is a happy thing!

So, in reponse to my little post to my class instructor, he responds:

"Even more scarey, [Ethan], is if Barney is one day considered the mythology of our time!

In ancient times, in a land they called "America," the people worshipped a giant purple dinosaur, whom they called Barney. "Barney's" message to his worshippers was universal love, and the song the people use in their sacred ceremonies was, "I love you. You love me ..."

Scarey, indeed!"

. . .

I did not see that one coming . . .

Or Care Bears…Or Smurfs…Or Snorks…

You are very strong.

I went to a dive movie. You swim in a pool and watch a movie that is projected on a large screen. Only in Florida.

I hated to have to get mine shipped. I felt very disappointed when it did not come when expected.

You better have watched Jaws. Thats the only way to do it.

Actually, I noticed this sort of thing going on at the Gaylord hotel in the National Harbor. I didn’t realize the practice had a name. So only in Florida…and D.C.

We did not watch Jaws but that is a great idea. I really had a good time.

To maintain karma in the gwc-verse…

the US made it to the final! of the Confederations cup! Yay! (1st time us men’s team is in a world final). Sure, we lost in the end (3-2), but we had an awesome first half.

The I one I discovered the practice with (alas, not by participating, just as an onlooker) was “Finding Nemo,” which also seems aproppriate.

going on a harry potter marathon in preparation for the next arc now, never really got into the movies, but i borrowed them all and now well see if i can can be converted. with a HP shock and awe campaign.

I read the first few books before their movies came out. Now I have not read one for some time. I hope you enjoy the movies.

Im sure its more amusing when with your with friends. Especially when those friends are girls who will scream bloody murder when scared. I am a terrible, terrible person
