Cool craaaaaap you've acquired/done lately

Ok I was sent this and could not help to pass it on. So if anyone still wonders why I like dogs here is something to watch. The soldier was gone for 14 months and his Aussies gave him this homecoming.

Dammit! You made The GF cry. (She’s an Air Force brat.)

Very nice. I like how the black one got pissed that the other one was hogging the attention.

Oh, Sorry I should have put a tissue needed warning. The nice thing is I do not have to be gone more than at work to get a greeting like that. Dogs are great. I am part of an Aussie rescue group and they sent it to me. Everyone said they got teary eyed.

I should have known to put a warning. I am sorry GF.

I hope the soldier is still doing well.

She actually enjoyed it. It was just giving her flashbacks (and her Dad’s deployments weren’t anything like fourteen months.)

There is another video with Yorkies but it is not as good. Give the GF a hug from me.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW T_T

I need a dog, all dogs love me. I need one.

Also

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW

Go to a shelter or a rescue group and adopt one. They are great when you have a bad day and just need someone to hang with. They can even lower your blood pressure. No joke dogs can be very calming. They have kept me from killing a few students in my time. Just make sure that you and the dog are a good match. The shelter I help out with have had so many dogs brought in because of people are loosing their homes and large dogs can not live where they move to. Dogs are also expensive to feed and give medical care. So if you have a good situation get a dog. Shelters will be able to advise you what dog would be good for you if you do not know already.

I have Australian Shepherds like the dogs in the video.

Wow. I was doing housework…now I’m sitting in front of my laptop with tears dripping off my jaw.
One of many many fears you have when deploying (and I speak from experience) is that your beloved pets won’t be there when you get back, especially if they’re older, etc. Thanks Leah, that was very, very touching.

I haven’t done anything cool lately, but my six year old did. She just had 10 inches cut off her hair to donate to Locks of Love, a foundation that takes child hair donations to make wigs for kids fighting cancer or alopaecia.

I’m so proud of her.

That is so cool, Armando!
My six year old year is planning to do the same! She’s ready any time–her hair is getting really long. But we’re now trying to make sure that she REALLY wants to do it–and to make it clear to her that she can change her mind if she wants. The idea of doing and and actually doing it are two different things.

So say we all.

Locks of love is a great organization (though if kids want to keep their hair long, let them! Don’t assume they are just growing it to give it away… maybe they’re growing it selfishly to keep all for themselves… ;))

That is awesome Armando! She deserves ice cream ! Pronto !

Yeah. My daughter was planning this for a year. A friend of hers back in NY did it and she decided she wanted to do it, but needed to grow her hair out a bit more till she could. We realized she had enough hair to do so earlier this week and she asked if she could donate it, which she did yesterday.

I love this kid!

I did have a chuckle when I found out that not only do they make wigs for kids with cancer but also with alopaecia, which I didn’t realize was a real disease. All I could think of was “they’re going to look pretty silly going to the opera with two mustaches stuck to their eyebrows.” Thankfully, Mrs. Armando knew just what I was talking about and giggled appreciatively. (At least no one will look like Edgar Winter with my daughter’s hair!)

On that note, I have begun acquiring the pieces of my Halloween costume- I’m going as Fidel Castro. Believe me, I look sexy in a beard.

I also acquired two new winter coats, and a habit of studying for the GRE (thus my nearly 2-week absence from GWC… well, that and this grant report that I actually had to work really hard on for two weeks).

CASTRO!?!?! Why didn’t I think of that?

Oh yeah, cause my grandfather who almost died of tuberculosis in a Cuban forced labor camp after the revolution would roll over in his grave!

Maybe I’ll go as Che Guevara…oh, wait…

Goram it! I still need a halloween costume.

Your kid sounds awesome!
How did your daughter deal with such a dramatic change in hair lengh? Was she apprehensive about it? Did she have any regrets after?

I bit my nails over cutting off all my hair for almost 4 months, and when I did it I felt FREE as a bird. It was awesome. Also, especially at such a young age, you can make it an adventure. If she hates it, let her pick out a cute hat and make her some “miracle gro for kids” (put her shampoo in a special bottle and make the growing out process fun). It only takes about a year to grow back 6 inches.

You’re one of them music makin’ guys…
How about a zombie Beethoven?
You could be Beethoven decomposing.
