Cool craaaaaap you've acquired/done lately

You’re absolutely right. Ownership of human beings who are deprived of their rights (called “slavery”) is so 19th century. Short-term leasing of human beings who are deprived of their rights (called “graduate school”) is much more sensible way to go.

Adjunct teaching is also in the leased human labor category.

$5million=upper middle class. HA! Who’s saying this, John McCain? Phil Gram?

(There I go, bringing politics into this!)

Um. Actually, yes. Sadly. $5M income (not net worth) is what JM defined as rich at the big Q&A at that California megachurch a few weeks ago.

Also, adjunct teaching is totally leased human labor. Without that, my department would not survive. It is ridiculous how little we can pay our adjuncts.

You’re preaching to the choir, sister. I went from a cushy, one class a semester, five minute commute, full time gig postdoc to three classes at part time status (meaning no benefits) and an hour commute. But at least the school’s got a good name! (Let’s see if that pays off in this year’s job search.)

Today I had a very strange and ultimately very nice experience. There’s this colleague who teaches composition at my school whose name I’ve been aware of for five years. He’s about my age and is infinitely more succesful so, naturally, I’m insanely jealous of him. So for the last several years I’ve always pictured that he would be stuck up or, at least, unapproachable in his self-awareness about his own success. This morning I was introduced to the man. Sweetest guy on earth. Down to earth. Friendly. Wants to hang out, get a beer, talk shop.

I feel like a schmuck. Serves me right. I love it when things like this happen. They restore my faith in humanity.

I took a language proficiency exam and I think it went OK… even though the exam itself isn’t what that language department did in the past. And advertised as what the exam was about. But I think I passed, so that’s pretty cool. I’ll know in a few weeks for sure, but I’m nearly 100% sure I passed.

I passed my first section of an on line course I am taking to keep my teacher certification. That is one of the reasons I am not chatting with you lovely people as much as before.

I was on the constitution section of our text on the correct day to teach it. When we passed the date in the text one of my students yelled out that is today. I am so thrilled that someone in my class was paying attention and thinking.

It turns out I did pass the proficiency exam. So that’s pretty neat

Congratulations.

an iPod Touch with my callsign engraved on the back–complete with exclamation point

Congratulations!

Congrats, Cas !! And you were worried…

Picture please !

That’s cool  Mine is boring, it just has my name. Well and I don’t have a Touch, just a shuffle. But still. Shiny!

I recently moved closer to my work. So now instead of driving 42 miles to work I now drive 12! It’s such a cool little place too!

Congrats! Your new, smaller fuel budget is probably also a nice perk!

Yes, yes it is! Only real problem is I know like no one here!

I bet if you put I sign on your door that says “Free Beer” you will meet a lot of people.

Hmmm I’m not sure I wanna do that…I mean what if TFG or Talos walks in? Oh wait, that might make it entertaining…

wakes Whut? Who? Free Beer. Oh. Oh.
