Cool craaaaaap you've acquired/done lately

So I’ve been spending the week in Syracuse, NY (which is why I’ve only been around sporadically). Got to spend Wednesday rehearsing then talking to composition students at SU’s music department, which is always a treat (and the professor’s introduction made me finally realize that I’m actually successful at this job and that I really wish someone had told me how little money composers actually make! ). Had a great premiere (of a new cello concerto based on the story of the death of Orpheus) last night after spending the morning having brunch with old friends and playing morning zoo on classical radio at noon. All capped off by a day at my old haunt of Hamilton College talking to composition students there and a great concert at the end of the night by the Syracuse Symphony (I don’t go to many of those, so this was a treat) and great conversation with my hosts at the end of the night. Now… 8 hour drive tomorrow. (But no more traveling for a month, thankfully!)

well the jig is up I’ve been had!

That sounds like a super awesome time, Armando! I haz a jealous hehe

Just got back from taking my 6 year old shooting for the first time:

This is him with the Walther, he did great!

That has photo caption contest written all over it.

“What ain’t no country I ever heard of! They speak English in What?!”

You started with handguns? Or is that just later in the day?

Also, two hands! He might as well be holding it rapper-style…

Started with the 10-22 (Rifle) then moved to the Walther. Started him with two handed shooting posture, but I had him rattle off a clip one handed so he could see the difference.

I might post more pics.

It’s crazy how British I become when I see a picture like that! “OH NO! A CHILD (being responsibly taught how to use and what to do) WITH A GUN! TO THE DAILY MAIL!!”

I like Walthers, Yey swears by Glocks, but not my scene.:stuck_out_tongue:

heh heh, it’s not just British, there are plenty of folks around here like that too that lack the self awareness or see a possible positive side too.

It’s funny, I’ve noticed a trend. I know one group of people who teach their kids gun safety at an early age but are outraged at the idea of teaching kids about safe sex, and another group that’s fine with teaching sex ed, but doesn’t want their kid to ever even see a gun.

Our kids are getting both talks, heh, and the earlier they can learn how to stay out of trouble with either kind of pistol, the safer they’ll be.

Another thing, I was talking to my mom yesterday and she was upset that they were learning gun safety. I reminded her that while we can take steps to store guns safely in our house, we have no idea what the other parents might do at their friends’ houses. If Johnny Neighbor pulls out a 38 he found in a drawer and says ‘check this out!’ my kids will know to make tracks and get an adult because we’ll have defined a mental structure regarding guns in their heads instead of just hoping the ol’ ‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’ method of parenting will work.

i’m all for responsible parenting, and I totally agree that teaching kids HOW to be responsible is the best plan.

Still… hold off showing them The Matrix for a while, Gunporn is for slightly older kids! :stuck_out_tongue:

I know, and their gun handling/stances are attrocious!

It does LOOK cool though

This is what popped into my head whilst reading that:

Not that this ex-soldier doesn’t approve of training in the proper use any dangerous, but useful thing

It works, I can attest.

I have a friend who works in the movie biz (movies you’ve probably seen) as a prop master/SFX guy. He occasionally surprises me with some replica he’s done on his spare time and I ALWAYS berate him for pointing it at me. It’s not loaded, it’s not even capable of being loaded, but Eddie Eagle is nagging me from my shoulder.

My grandfather, who lives down in Warwickshire, had an air-rifle for a while for dealing with gophers or something (he used to garden a lot), so firearms aren’t unknown on Britain. Of course we never even saw the thing being 6 or something at the time. It was in the Boy Scouts that I learned to fire one.

experience a nightmarish image of himself and his peers with guns in the Boy Scouts

My peers and I have cerebral palsy with various degrees of normalcy and retardation. That would have been a disaster…

wonders if a “Kids and guns” thread should be made We’ve derailed this thread quite a bit.

Oh no, guns definately belong on the [thread=‘3020’]Cool craaaaaap[/thread] thread. At least until they belong on the [thread=‘3095’]other thread[/thread].

I have to say something good after posting in the B & M thread. My rule so I have to follow it. I am happy my husband is doing well and he is safe. The dogs made the day out well even being left alone for a long time.

I’ll echo my sentiments from the B&M thread and say that I hope he continues to do fine and be safe and that tomorrow’s stress test shows nothing wrong that a little exercise and change in diet won’t help.
