As I understand it, Edward the Emo Vampire is like 100 years old, but in all that time never “did the deed” or “Met Hannah and her 4 sisters”.
100 years is a long time to build up that kinda frustration, so he took it out oh his hair. “I HAVE TO MAKE SOMETHING STIFF AND STAND-UPPY! SO IT SHALL BE MY HAIR!”.
I get to fulfill a major dream of mine next fall and conduct the piece that changed my creative life. My group will only be the second professional ensemble to perform it in the United States and the first made up of Americans.
Yeah. Now the trick is to raise the rest of the money we need to pay the performers a fair wage (we have enough to pay them our usual honorarium, but we would like to pay as much as we can for this big a piece) AND cover our advertising costs, but we have a head start on that, so hopefully it’ll work out. We have a venue that can pay SOMETHING and the Dutch consulate is going to cover the rental of perormance materials, so we’re more than halfway there.
My good news for today- I’m at a writing conference this weekend and I had the opportunity to pay for a read/critique with my favorite author in my genre, Jane Green. The not-so-good news- my novel isn’t where is should be (knew this, was hoping to stay in denial) but the great news is that Jane not only helped identify the problems but gave me the solutions to fix them. She also encouraged me to stick with this book and assured me that I was a good writer.
So I feel great now because I have a plan (The Plan?) to get the book in it’s best possible shape. The process will be tough though, so I expect to spend some time on the B&m thread during it.
See, fight them until you can’t, Dawn! And you pick up some allies along the way to boot.
Someday I’d love to talk to you about the process of writing a novel. It seems so daunting! I mean, I’ve written big pieces before (an hour or more), but those still don’t take as much of my life as a novel seems to take (particularly a first novel). I guess the equivalent in my field would be writing an opera or other large theatrical work, which can often take years and revisions after workshops and first productions.
Thanks Pike and Armando for the support. Armando, I’d love to hear about your process too. I bet that even though we’re in different creative mediums, there are many similarities creating the work- like swearing, self-doubt and anxiety!
In congress you don’t need mandates, just majorities.
I will refrain from getting political here, in the interest of keepin GWC friendly, but this is a cause that’s VERY close to my and the mrs.’ hearts right now as we’re currently paying $1500 a month in health insurance.
