Cool craaaaaap you've acquired/done lately

actual books. I also like to write on my books, and curl up with them, and certain publishing houses I just love the way they smell. I like having them as artifacts.

Articles, I like digital editions, and if I can’t get something any other way, digital editions. But if it’s something I’m going to use a lot, I print it out and bind it up for myself, so it’s like it’s a book!

Ahem, MATE! but you need to have a look at my location…

Crikey.

WHOOPS! Bloody hell, crikey indeed

No worries me old cobber

Hey Bostonahs, dont’cha think these outtah townahs tahlk wicked bizaaahr?

P.S. I actually did pahk my cah in Havahd Yahd once!

Oh, actual books for me, please! I can manage reading web sites and such, but reading a screen gets tiring after a while. I also love the very physicality of books. Not just the smell of ink and paper, but the heft of a book and the beauty of a particularly nice edition.

I’m going to have to do this with a couple of books I’ve been sent (a book about soldiers’ music making in the Iraq War by an old grad school friend) or downloaded (The Secret History of Star Wars), which I haven’t gotten around to reading because of them being in my hard drive. But all that paper!

¿Qué?

Yeah, I’ve been told that

Funny thing I just realized: no one in immediate family has the same accent. Even my younger brother’s accent is different, at least according to my mom. She says it’s “less southern”. Of course that’s compared to her broad NJ accent:)

Driving in Cambridge? You’re insane, or Harvard educated, which is the same thing.

Harvard diplomas. Don’t they give those away in vending machines now? :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree about taking paper books over digital ones, but my reasoning has to do more with the DRM. I firmly believe that if I buy a book, I should have the right to lend it to my friends, make a working backup copy in case my hard drive dies, and not have to be at the mercy of the company I bought it from to continue reading the book indefinitely. The recent amazonfail over them recalling the Kindle edition of 1984 and Barnes and Noble putting DRM on uncopyrighted works in the public domain tells me digital booksellers still don’t fully have their acts together with regards to their business. Given how competition eventually drove online music sellers to drop DRM, I’m going to wait until a similar thing happens with ebooks before spending any money on them.

Meh, Boston and Cambridge aren’t that bad to drive in once you know the area! It’s driving in New York that scares me!

Driving in New York’s a piece of cake. (It’s the damn pedestrians that are the problem!)

definatly real books over anything else. i read alot on a large variety of things. and lemme tell ya if the religeos extreamist ever come to power. me and many books in my collection are gonna be involved in a religeos “purification ritual” you know study old cultures. study their fears (AKA religeons)

and the fact that the whole kindel thing i had been looking to getting one had saved up the money. and then they pulled that whole remove the book thing. that basicly made me decided to stick with the glued togeher chunk of paper. at least for the forseable future. and the whole deal was giveing me weird Asimove like vibs.

Gave my notice at the Omnimax today (just a few minutes ago, actually). I now have 30 days left. August 29th will be my last day, and due to a special event that evening, it looks like I’ll be working a double shift. What a way to go.

Meanwhile, congrats Cackleberry and DrQuest! You’re really putting the “distance” in “Long-Distance Relationship!” God bless the Internet, right? And the GWC.

DrQ, where in Missouri are you? I’m here in St. Louis, and the closest GWCer I’ve met is Gryper in Peoria, IL. 'Twould be great to have a mini-meetup.

I’ll post this for the sake of karmic balance: I finally, FINALLY picked up Mass Effect. Gonna go play now. This better be good.

See you on Monday.

Well, I can’t run it in any way that makes me want to play it. I think I made a mistake buying a lap top last year, except that this is the first time I’ve had any sort of performance issues with a game. ugh!

I’ve got a Dell 1720 laptop and that runs it. It looks up occasionally but I’ve just learned to save a lot.

Monday? If Armando doesn’t do anything else, he might be done by Monday.

I’ve got an HP Pavillion dv2700 an AMD Turion 64 2 gig processor, 4 gigs of RAM and and an NVidia series 7 video card. I can run the game, but it drops some lines of dialogue and the graphics and mouse controls are rather slow. This machine SHOULD run Mass Effect but my performance score is apparently 2.5 and I need a minimum of 4 to run ME at minimum levels. I bought this machine not just as a work computer but because it was designed for gaming and this game is older than the computer, so it can’t be a compatibility issue, can it?

I did try to update my video card drivers and the install wizard couldn’t find any compatible drivers on NVDIA’s web site or my computer. I’m very confused.

armando often computers with invidia video cards have a diganostics and settings program. i know what mine is but its possible yours isnt installed.?? and sometimes you gotta kinda dig on the nvidea site to find your drivers. allso check you computers manufacturor site for the drivers and oddly enuff windows.

if you could tell me exactly what model of nvidia serise 7 i could prolly find the newest driver and link it to you in private. (this is one of those times you wish the guy was close enuff to bring it over) or if you have a buddy that is a gameing freak drop the problem in his lap. he really wont mind the complaing is for show.

tho just looking if its a nvidia Gforce serise 7 this is the driver http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_190.38_whql.html

if its some outher kind let me know.
