Classic Sci-Fi Movies

Not many movies feature both a giant squid AND a giant octopus. Nothing short of brilliant - at least when you’re 13 years old.

So true. Brazil is so bizarre, it is a cult classic.

My man!! high five

Never seen it. But I had the same feeling about putting King Kong on the list.

I don’t think it ranks as high as the others. Bargain bin. heehee.

Honorable mention. This is a tough call. Vincent Price is worth nowadays admission prices but Goldblum is priceless.

I think your evaluations are spot on. We’re talking excellence and/or cult fame here. Bag The Fly, Shrinking Man (help! help!) and X-Ray Eyes (although some day watch it - a VERY disturbing ending - Stephen King ranks it at the top of his list for movie horror - which, come to think of it, means he must not yet have seen Brazil - talk about a rough ending) - and my later added Mothra (merely a sentimental favorite on my part) and anything starring Peter Graves.

Here’s a tougher one - Alien or Aliens?

Depends. I love both films. I find the first film more suspenseful with one Alien opposed to hundreds in the second. I’m glad they went back to one Alien in III.

Then since you are the ring master here - suggest you add Alien to the list.

This topic is a blast. Also, suggest to not open door to Star Trek or Star Wars - each is its own “species”.

The eternal femine leads us on - Goethe

OMGs That’s right. They are re-making Trek. palm to forehead And you could consider the pre-quels of Wars re-makes also. Like you said, let’s not even go there. Besides, there all series of films.

Out of curiosity, what is your take on Metropolis? Anyone else can feel free to chime in on Metropolis also. Don’t mean for it to sound exclusive.

My take on it is that I fully intended to raise it, had a big brown drink before dinner (OK, maybe two) and promptly forgot to do so. It has to be on the list. It’s the “father” of all sci fi films. Some may contend that the story drags a bit (not I), but even they would have to concede that the look of the film remains fabulous (and the robot is top notch too). Think Gotham City in the first Tim Burton Batman movie is amazing - take a look at Metropolis.

I originally watched it because of what you just said, “father” of scifi films. I watched the one restored for DVD, it still had missing parts. I don’t even want to think about the one with the Queen soundtrack (I’ve never scene but it just doesn’t sound like a good idea).

I really enjoyed all the scenes with Maria / Robot (Brigitte Helm). I mean, she’s a hot seducing robot. What’s not to like? The sets and scenery are spectacular, especially the flooding the city scene.

Seems I may have started something here, but I’m not ready to include the 1990s in a ‘classic era’ just yet. I’m thinking 70s and before with a sprinkling of the 1980s.

I miss the 80s.

Kids today… It isn’t a classic until early sixties, latest.

Boy - Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea barely sneaks in.

LOL…I’d say early 70’s at the latest. Here’s a link to Classic Sci-Fi (they call all of them classic through 2006…which is craaap):

This list by year (you can show it by title, etc too) give a good idea what we’ve missed in our listing. :stuck_out_tongue:

Frak the Whut! How is Casino Royale even scifi?

The Woody Allen one? Makes sense to me.

Click on a movie title and you can see the film’s poster and summary…plus clips for them…well at least the one’s I checked out have clips from the films. I question all of the Bond films being in their list.

Point taken.

A Tron ‘cast would be frakkin’ sweet! I havn’t watched it in ages.

I think there was a Tron in the DTA 'casts, but that’s all fraked up right now.

This is my first post, so don’t kill me…

If another Classic Sci-Fi arc is done, this would be my humble list…

  1. Metropolis - 1927, Dir. Fritz Lang

I just watched the new restoration tonight, and man is this really an amazing movie! Great effects, some of which hold up very well today, and the grand daddy of all Sci-Fi epics. Blade Runner stole from it, Lucas based C-3PO on the design of the Maschinenmensch in this film. The new restoration that premiered tonight in NYC, is shy 6 minutes of how the film was shown at it’s premier in Berlin in 1927, and I highly recommend that if you can get to see it, see it!

  1. Things To Come - 1936, Screenplay by HG Wells.

Come on, a movie based on a HG Wells novel, with a screenplay by HG Wells himself? You gotta see it. It’s in the Public Domain here in the US, so you can freely find somewhere to download it I’m sure.

  1. When Worlds Collide - 1951

George Pal produced this one, and it won the Oscar for Special Effects. Very cool movie.
