Once, when asked whether he preferred playing heros or villains, William Defoe (I think) said that there’s no difference.

Frequently, when a villain’s motivations are reveled, it’s a bit of a let down. Maybe it’s just me, but Cavil came off as a bit pathetic when Ellen unwrapped that one for us. Not so the Shadows. Understanding them is like understanding National Socialism. Sure it’s internally coherent and intellectually interesting, but it’s still depraved.
