i received the series as a gift, i could only choke down 2 or 3 episodes… and i usually like crappy low budget B sci fi

Do it. The series is rather well considered around here. I haven’t seen it since it aired, but the beginning of a series is often rough, as the writers and actors are trying to figure out the series themselves. Think ST:TNG.
Jurassic Park. 1 was great, 2 was livable and past that…well, let’s not go there.
I actually listened to a podcast that covered this subject for an episode. It was mostly about the man and was pretty f-ed up but interesting.
