Android phone OS lover

Real wrath of God type stuff! Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness, earthquakes, and volcanos!
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together, Iphones running Android! Mass hysteria!

quick, get the Winchesters on the line!

getting on my tiny little soapbox

well that just seems great i mean apple users with a little work, can get android, i mean apple will void your warranty; its completely legal but still they’ll void any jail broken iPhone. tis the price you pay for…

apology for the above but its just that a company i loved has just gone completely… i’ll just stop

either way nice to see open source software being enjoyed by more folks.

i have been compiling Android OS for x86… yeah, you can now run Android on your computer… why would you do that? i dunno. but you can though…

phone finally got updated to 2.1 and is awesome… yeah!!! free turn by turn… also just found a way to kill htc sense ui and use vanilla 2.1 its like a brand new phone,

I just Rooted my Tmobile mytouch 3g. it had 1.6 on it and now i am running 2.1.

I put 2.2 on it. but the ROM didn’t have any of the google bits, and even when i flashed the google pack that is supposed to fix it, no google account so no market… no nothin…so i went down to 2.1 and everything works well.

phone is faster then when i got it. mostly because now all the apps are installed on the sd card and not the internal memory.

it was a bit scary to do. but i am very happy with the results.

my crappy phone without a color monitor that i used for years died, and i finally got an HTC Desire.

I am very disturbed that youtube videos are running smoother on my HTC than my computer… granted it’s old, but it’s still a fraking computer… how can this be…

i have HTC Sense running on my phone to, at school i play with Android source code and stuff, but never really used it, so i can’t get a sense of what’s different between the two interfaces.

why do you prefer one over the other, and how do you enable android ui, can i just kill the sense ui from task manager?

all the tutorials i am running into are for some early version of the desire. I will keep looking for you.
a word of warning. the sense UI is what makes the internet video run so smooth.

is anyone else using springpad for remembering stuff?
check it out…

i find it looks clutered. i like the clean look of natural android for example there is always the same tray icons on sense; in it 2.1 allows you change it up, its just personal choice

getting rid of it is more difficult on the older rom you can access it and disable it. but newer roms wont let you disable it. you disable it and it will restart. So you need to download a launcher program.

basically i think it makes my phones ui ugly.

Let’s share your favorite android apps:

first of all, I find appbrain a must have.

http://www.appbrain.com

once you’ve installed appbrain on your phone, you can browse and find apps to install, and the install command will sync to your phone. so you will no longer have to take pictures of QR codes, or browse for apps on the tiny screen.

appbrain even lets you share your installed apps, mine is here:

http://www.appbrain.com/user/hansioux/apps-on-the-htc-desire

i’ve got some pretty silly apps, and some are preinstalled (and unremovable) by my service provider…

being cheap… i only have the free versions of games… (my first purchased app will be the Bosiami input method when the trial period ends),

but here are some games I love:

AngryBirds (well… we all know what it is)
Hungry Shark (probably also available on iphone)
Baseball Superstars (i have the free version… but i can play the homerun derby till my phone dies)

Apps I can’t live without:

audible (yes, audible audio books has a Android app, i’ve been listening to Craig Ferguson’s book on it…)
Google Sky Map (if you like stars, this is a great way to get started)

Here’s list of android app of the week from the Linux Action Show on appbrain:

In case you have way too many apps that can’t be moved to your SD card, so your phone refuse to install more apps or even loses abilities to run some apps, here is a way to move more apps to your SD card:

  1. Install android usb driver from: http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
If you use Linux or Mac you don’t need to install drivers, just follow configuration instructions here: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html#setting-up
  2. Reboot after driver install or configuration (or just restart some services, but why not just reboot)
  3. Download android sdk: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
you don’t need to install the SDK, just extract it somewhere. We only need adb in the tool folder
  4. Turn on USB debugging by: Settings ->Applications->Development -> check USB debugging.
  5. Plugin USB, you can leave the USB in charge only mode.
  6. Open command prompt (cmd) or a terminal for those using better OS. move path to where you extracted the Android SDK, and go in the tool folder.
  7. Run this command: adb device
  8. If it lists your device, then driver install/configuration was successful.
  9. Run this command: adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
  10. Done! now you can move more apps into your SD card in your android phone.

I was looking at this Android phone called the Samsung Beam.

Apart from it’s 8 megapixel camera and HD video capability, it can also beam images like a slideshow on a wall.

What do you guys think of it?

The portable projectors I’ve seen generally require a fairly dark room, so keep that in mind.

great time wasting app…

its simple and addictive well to me

called tangram pro
and i believe there a a free version with less puzzles

but just traditional tangrams with a good interface.

pretty sweet.

I would really like a smartphone. Yes, I am still using a basic phone, because I am subscribed to an awesome phone plan called Even Though I’m 26 I’m Still on Mom’s Family Plan. It’s ATT, sadly, because I live in DC. As Pike mentioned, ATT doesn’t work very well in DC. She just got a iPhone but I want an Android phone. Her iPhone, however does mean that I can add a second data plan for $15 per month.

So what’s the Hive Mind advice for an ATT subscriber in DC who wants an Android phone? Any particularly good Android phones that I should check out?

i really suggest HTC phones. I own a desire and am very satisfied. If you do want physical key boards , there’s always the desire z, if you want larger screens, I suggest desire hd, but desire for me is just the right mix, even though I don’t like touch screen keyboards, Google’s default English input is simply brilliant. I just type away and forget if my fat fingers are clicking all the wrong places. I am typing this reply on my desire right this moment, because my mother board on my computer died. And I an not having any trouble.

But keep in mind that battery on most smaetphones are pretty poor. The benefit of Android devices is that users can replace the battery. So doesn’t matter which Droid phones you get, get an extra battery and a battery charger. So that when you can’t help yourself playing those awesome free apps, you always have a backup.
