#285: Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Conan

We offer some just-back-from-the-theater commentary on the new ‘Apes movie. And we run down the week in geek, including Sean’s Dragon Siege 3 experience, an early take on Conan (now with 100% more Momoa), the scornful Forza 4 Walmart Mini, the wisp of new Babylon 5 production possibility, and big Blade Runner news.

Indeed you should…tis OSSIM

Yes. You must. This endorsement comes from an old-school Apes head who was hesitant to see the new one.

Apes may have my favorite movie line of the year. Y’all who’ve seen it know what I’m talkin’ 'bout.

I’ve seen it three times already in theaters. A movie really has to be damn good to make me do that. If I don’t include documentaries, it is the best movie I’ve seen this year, 3rd best if I include documentaries (after Senna and Bill Cunningham’s New York). Definitely go see it.

Listening now. Sweet that Chuck caught the callback to the 1968 film with Tom Felton’s character name - Dodge Landon, a name that was made from the two other astronauts on the Icarus from the original movie.

Oh and the Heston movie that was being shown? The Agony and The Ecstasy

@PhotoNutz: Steelin’ myself up to go see Senna. It opens at the Angelika here in a week or two. I’ve heard great things, but I’m not sure I’m ready to re-enter his life.

I saw it here at the Sunshine before going into a midnight showing of Forbidden Planet with a new 35mm print. Senna is just amazing. I actually got a chance to see Senna race in person when I went to the Gran Prix of Monte Carlo a long time ago, and he was one of my heroes.

Oh and of the trailers I saw with ROTPOA, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and In Time really grabbed my attention. I’ve seen all the swedish films and read the books so this version looks very interesting, plus c’mon Led Zepplin playing for the whole trailer? AWESOME!!!

In Time looks great, sort of like a very modern dark Logan’s Run, and having hot readheads in it? Pure Awesomeness

Want to hear the amazing Planet Of The Apes soundtrack by Patrick Doyle? Here’s a link to the YouTube playlist: Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Soundtrack. And let me know what you think. Did you like it? Did it rub you the wrong way? Am I completely nuts for thinking its good?

Maybe I’m just starved for good movie soundtracks and have been spoiled by John Williams, James Horner, John Barry and Daft Punk. Wow - did you ever think you’d see Daft Punk in a list along with the likes of John Williams, James Horner and John Barry?

The “evil” ape from Rise of the Planet of the Apes was named Koba. The mark on his face (along with the milky eye) is a scar. It looks like the result of an injury (at least I hope it wasn’t on purpose.) At one point, when they’re strapping him onto the table for testing, one of the lab techs makes a comment along the lines of “He knows the drill” which makes me believe that Koba had been tested on quite a bit before and that’s why he has such a hatred of humans once his intelligence kicks in.

This looks to be setting up a relationship between Caeser and Koba along the lines of MLK and Malcom X (or Professor X and Magneto.) If a sequel gets made, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them at odds on how to deal with humans.

Just had to share this because it is ALSO my favorite moment in Babylon 5. Note: Labeling is in Spanish (I believe), the clip is in English

And my second favorite moment (just because I can) this one involves Ivanova

Great scenes! On of my personal faves is when in “War Without End Part 2” Londo gets G’kar to kill him so Sheridan and De’llen can escape

I’ll give it a spin… But your note also reminded me of a few moments where the score gave way to silence very effectively.

great cast, +1 for foreign hostness, +2 for Hit Girl reference.

hopefully mister Serkis get’s a frakking Academy nod.

usually when I watch an hour of tv I lose an hour off of my life. 22 minutes seems like a bargain :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyone see this article:
