#250: Tron Legacy

I had to get up from bed to write this since Audra mentioned Kato is foine.

The new Kato is played by the Taiwanese songwriter turned singer turned mega star, Jay Chou.

He started out as a songwriter. when the record company decided to make him a singer, he became famous for his unique music style due to his classical piano training.

recently he’s been going into the film business, and The Green Hornet is his first American movie.

i am not sure if he is anywhere as good looking as Bruce Lee… but he certainly looks the part as Kato.

Has anyone from the trio listened to SModcast 149: Harry Scotter and The Hefty Swallow? OMG, I would love to hear your thoughts on this in the next podcast.

That’s what he said.

Just got back from the movie, and I gotta say, it was fun. I completely understand some of the negative reviews I’ve heard, but I still enjoyed it.

Ups: Overall Soundtrack, story, Bridges

Downs: Uncanny Divide still exists, Tron’s rather ambiguous end(?)

One thing that really stood out to me was how Clu’s story matches the creation and eventual Fall of Lucifer. Lucifer was created to watch over Creation, and while he could not create anything, he could turn things to his purpose, or destroy things that threatened his charge. Like Lucifer, Clu’s only response to the seeming betrayal by his creator is rebellion. The Tron: Evolution game also adds the possibility of a viral infection, but that’s the game.

I did think that the soundtrack during the final fight scene was perhaps too slow, and took some of the energy away from the battle. The light trails almost seemed to pin the vehicles in place as well, which may have added to that stagnation. Just me.

Grats on quarter-of-the-way-to-1k!

FWIW, my (spoilery?) review is at my blog here. In conclusion, I want to see it again. And again. Preferably in IMAX 3D if I can swing it, even though it’s a drive and expensive.

And YAY, Disney XD ordered a series (possible spoilers? Maybe? If you squint?) to air in 2012! They’re doing an awesome job with the Avengers series, so I’m hopeful.

Only just getting to the actual discussion part of the 'cast so I don’t know if it’s covered, but I can’t be the only one who saw the Paradise Lost references in this, right? Call me pretentious, but I latched on to that and adored it.

Wasn’t it great to see Donnelly Rhodes again?

Ok, I missed it. Where was he?

Forgeticus!!!

Grandpa Flynn at the beginning of the movie. Always good to see Doc Cottle disguised as Not Doc Cottle.

So on the subject of references to other movies, who thought that Flynn’s apartment in the virtual world looked like the “zoo” room at the end of 2001?

2001:

Tron:

Also, anyone catch the War Games refernce? The only winning statergy is not to play, is I think what Flynn says.

I caught the War Games quote…but I didn’t get a 2001 vibe from Flynn’s abode. It’s very sparsely furnished compared to the zoo room.

I did -especially when I saw the furniture when they were eating…

I was the only one in my cadre to catch that when I saw it last Friday, but others in the theater obviously got it.

“The only winning move is not to play.”

Thanks for my new avatar! lol!

Have any Trueblood fans noticed Clu’s sycophant henchman is Tara’s psychotic vampire James Frain as Franklin Mott?

Creepy!!

How often I would use that in everyday life

Oh, Pirates  (original thread here).

Audra’s comment on Antonio Banderas makes me think of his early work (See his IMDB profile here), particularly in Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) and Tie me up! Tie me down! (1990). If you haven’t seen those, oh they’re fun. And funny. And fun.

With regards to the dark science fiction --> light science fiction pendulum swing. I enjoy Warehouse 13 (haven’t had the chance to catch up on Eureka yet), but what got me watching TV science fiction after a long time of not watching was Battlestar, and as much as I can enjoy the light-hearted show, I really enjoy (and seek out) programs that are perhaps a bit more openly philosophical, or that make me think about the human condition. Sans Trek reruns, I got that from Caprica (cancelled not long ago) and SG:U. So while I don’t want to imply that the other shows aren’t great in their own way, they aren’t the kind of shows I make sure to make time to watch week to week, and I am sad and somewhat resentful that to my knowledge, there isn’t something of that “type” on TV at the moment. (That said, V’s coming back soon, maybe that would fit the bill?)

LOL! Very nice, ma’am. I don’t remember you from the movie. I guess i’ll just have to see it again…in THREE(EEEE)-DEEEE(EEE)!

okay so everytime i hear a movie is in 3D, I think this

I love sci-fi and dramatic tension in film with good characters. Looked forward to the new Tron movie. Couldn’t wait to get it over with. Had that new Star Wars feeling of boredom halfway thorugh.

Was extremely disappointed with it’s ‘story’ - what a waste of franchise - so boringly Hollywood and predicable. I was never in any doubt they’d win though. The baddie was shallow, his henchmen utterly laughable. Zeus was grating after 3 minutes. Tron himself seemed to have been put on heavy medication. Another classic gets boxoffice botoxed! Sigh…
