#235: Superbad, HS Stories

The only time I first heard it was on american shows, but I’m not in the army so I have no idea if they use it or not. We use km/h sometimes, but in the cars it’s always miles per hour (or sonic’s buddy Miles Prowler)

Ive watched every single Star Trek episode of every show and I rank the shows
DS9
TOS
TNG
VOY
ENT

Out of all the shows I think DS9 did the best character developement of everyone from Captain Benjamin Sisko all the way to Quark the bartender.
TNG is a good show but had too many filler episodes to be ranked above TOS.VOY was an ok show but it just didnt do many compelling stories. I dont think the writers took enough chances with the characters.ENT didnt gel into a cohesive show until the last season with the addition of a new show runner. All in all Trek is still my favorite franchise to watch and read books about.

Awesome cast, keep it up.

Also check out the new Mass Effect 2 DLC, Lair of the Shadow Broker.

Hee! You’re probably right. But hey, every generation have a different set of high school stories that might be set in different circumstances, but the heart of it is the same - kids are kids.

I started off Superbad on the fence, and the “Vagtastic Voyage” bits almost threw me off. Then the flashback/montage of their “amusing” night out won me over. The fantasy bits in the liquor store totally won me over, and I was laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe.

“I never had a choice…”

“Have fun frakking Jules!”
“I WILL!”

Well, I love Trek. And I’m almost done having watched every single episode ever (only have the last few eps of S4 Enterprise… I’m putting it off… can’t believe I’m through it all!..) so having seen almost all of it - even the animated series - I rank from my favorite to my least favorite:

DS9
TNG
VOY
ENT
TOS

TNG and Voyager are really quite close on my list, depending on the day Voyager almost edges TNG out. Enterprise had some good gestures, but never developed the characters in such a way that I cared a great deal about them (except maybe, for me, T’Pol). And as much as I love Spock, TOS generally bothers me in ways that make me glad that I was born in the 80s, not earlier.

My school didn’t even have an orchestra, so I was in band, and played in basically every group possible - plus all county, all state, etc. It was fun, though I didn’t like the other students very much. Especially as I played an instrument that was mostly played by men, and there were some instances of sexual harassment towards the few women who played this instrument that were never really addressed by the teacher or administration. I’m still angry about that, now that I think about it. I had moments moving towards being a theatre person, but I didn’t like the hazing that they put people through, so I didn’t do it. I did do debate (as a young woman), and had a fabulous time, though the gender balance there sucked, too. At least no one was harrassing me or the other women there.

I guess what this whole arc brought back for me was a) how much I absolutely hated high school; b) how much I feel alienated by many of these films, well all except Clueless (though I find it fascinating that so many people don’t have that reaction!); and c) how different and similar everyone’s stories about that time in their lives have been.

I think of the Star Trek various series as children. I created a thread explaining that here. Don’t ask me to choose. giggle

You are dead to me. Todt!

Yeah that’s how I feel in the middle of my chart - and like Chuck said on the 'cast, all of it is still Trek, and therefore awesome

But I stay off your lawn!

I tried to watch Superbad a while back but gave up pretty quickly but I get that a lot with the work of Apatow, some of his stuff I enjoy and others leave me cold. I will try Superbad again because I should like it despite not having a grounding in US highschool/teen culture apart from the movies.

Loved the life in the fast lane anecdote, so American:D

This was my introduction to Boris Vallejo:

For Boris and chicks, please see the Gutter.

No love for Star Trek The Animated Series? C’mon!
