Well, I’m certainly not an expert in paleontology. I was using the quotes just because it’s not possible to prove anything in science- scientific truth doesn’t work like that. Better to say the data supports a theory or does not- or even disproves it, for it is possible to disprove something. But I often begin my school year drumming into my student’s heads, “In science, something is true until it is proven false.” I explain, this doesn’t mean any old thing is true. Rather, that, once it is shown to be true through the experimental method, we hold it lightly, knowing that even our most cherished beliefs could (and probably will) one day be proven false, as more data accumulates. Although it is nigh inconceivable that a theory like evolution that has such weight to it from so many varied sources, could one day be disproven, we have to accept that as a possibility, however remote. Science isn’t religion, after all.
The idea that Triceratops and Torosaurus are one and the same sounds great to me (again, no expert). But to be more certain of this, we need to take this through peer review further, with more scientists collaborating the data and comparing the bones. (Obviously, paleontology doesn’t lend itself to experiments like other sciences.) It’s just a bit too soon to be conclusive on it. From the little I’ve read on these two, we have found some of what seemed to be young Torosauruses. We need to explain those. It would also be great if we could find some more transitional forms between the two- not in the sense of evolution but just regular development. From my cursory reading, it seems that we still don’t have that.
Oh, that’s news to me. Yeah, that would put a wrench in the theory.
