#220: Heist Movies, Ocean's 12, Star Trek Douchebags

Sorry I’m late in replying to this. You know, I never connected what the Nightfox was doing with capoeira, but that may be because I learned about the martial art a while after I’d seen the movie. Interesting - I remember reading that capoeira had African roots but I associated it with Brazil.

At any rate, it is very cool to see live - one of my students did a demonstration for our class last year, and it was awesome.

Yeah I associate capoeira with Brazil, too - though in my understanding, it was a dance practiced by African slaves as a guise to maintain skills useful to defending themselves, if need be. Or the people I knew in college who did capoeira taught me wrong

I’m sure that, like most stuff that crossed the atlantic, it had its roots in the old world, but resembles its predecessors more in passing. (Cf., the banjo, bluegrass, etc.)

You’re right, started in africa as a guise and then it made its way over to Brazil where it is commonly practised.

There’s alot of information on Capoeira.com and wiki

I enjoyed the Pac Man and old games discussion. My first- and only - game when I was growing up was back around 82/83, playing Adventure, which thankfully can now be downloaded as freeware. I still love that more than any video game. I like that you have to use your imagination for everything. And you know what? I can still picture the woods, the building, the stream, the grate, the XYZZY room, the dwarf, the maze of twisting passages all alike, the bird and the snake…

Glad you like the site! In my elementary school (cira mid 1980’s) we mostly had the Apple IIE’s with the horrible green screens. Once in a hallway I saw an Apple 2GS running that someone had just put together and I was like… Whoa! That thing has colors! (Drool was probably coming out my mouth too.) Then when I went to middle school they switched to the original B/W Mac SE’s which strangley seemed like a step down even though they were newer.

By the way thanks for all the “Flight of the Concord” music quotes. No one around here seems to get thier music and when I make quotes people look at me like I’m mental or something. Au Revoir (I’m recieving a transmission from David Bowie’s nipple antenna!)
