The soundtrack was inspired by ‘The Planets’ by Gustav Holst. Meyer gave Eidelman a copy. At points the music is a blatant rip-off. You can get away with that in movie scores, though. Williams has been doing it for years. Please see here
That was the first trailer for First Contact, it premiered with Independence Day, which was way before the movie was done, so yeah, it had a lot of effects shots not from the movie. The Miranda-class starship was actually in Next Generation episodes, but we can assume they were “refit class” Miranda’s.
I’m not sure if I remember the refitted version, but I do remember the USS Brittain and that was definitely a derelict Miranda class ship. And then the Stargazer, which was a Constellation class ship, definitely built after the Miranda class ships, and they too were kind of out of order during TNG. What we saw a lot, though, were Excelsior class ships.
I’ll throw down for Generations. Sure, not as action packed as others, but there is something about the story that I have always enjoyed. A little soft, a little cheese…some very cool moments. Yep. I like it.
wow. look at the poll! can y’all see the pattern?
I wish this was a public poll. Who voted for Nemesis? there are 3 of you. Own up, we won’t make fun of you… much
I seem to recall that the whole idea behind “Nemesis” was “let’s just give the fans what they want”
… here is the funny part, not only do I recall not liking it…I had since purged the experience from my memory. I had to go lookup the plot to recall what the heck it was about.
It’s funny – I enjoyed Nemesis. Sure, it’s not one of my, say, top three. But I thought it was a good flick, and I enjoyed its combination of political intrigue and classic 'Trek villianry.
But then I still cling to VI as my favorite. I’m more fond of the TNG crew, but VI just struck me as a truly great story – one that tied so well into future 'Trek and made me feel a lot more emotion when the Kittomer accords are mentioned later. I feel sorta like I was there, you know?
I voted for Nemesis
But you can’t hang me yet, it is the only film so far I’ve seen, so it wins by default. (hey, I only started watching star trek three weeks ago and I already own 4 seasons of TNG, 1 of TOS and 3 of VOY. I’m so happy I found it, I always avoided star trek because I felt it would be the final nail in my ‘geek’ coffin. However now I have some 500+ hours to work through.)
Yeah, well, the plot wasn’t as ingenious as, say, STII, but I think well executed. A clone of Picard? Laughable, but they found a good actor to pull it off anyway.
I concur, I especially liked the final battle, thought it was greatly depicted from the scene Picard comes onto the bridge and orders a maneuver called “Kirk Epsilon” - great Trek moment. The deleted scenes on the DVD are also very insightful, there’s a great dialogue between Picard and Data about ageing and one more scene about the ending, gives it a kind of different mood.
Wow! I envy you. Watching Trek for the first time… great experience you’re going through, I would imagine. Let us know what you like/dislike, what you feel about Trek and DON’T forget DS9 - best Trek show ever!
And hey: geekdom is not a coffin, it’s a door to a brand new world!
I gotta got with II -Wrath of Khan. Every Star Trek movies has some great moments (yes, even Final Frontier), but Wrath of Khan had a tight story that all fit together, and great moments, great pace, great tone, and the best villan. My favorite scene/line: Khan says something like “Times up Kirk”. Kirk puts on his glasses, and says"It’s coming through now Khan". “Prepare to Recieve our Transmission”. Pulls down his bifocals gives Khan a look and says “Here it comes”. And the the Enterprise’s phasers fire and Khan is screwed.
Every Trek movie has some great moment, whether it’s a great line, great special effects moment, great emotional moment, litterary moment, etc.
My favorite line from Khan is:
‘I’ve done far worse that kill you. I’ve hurt you and I wish to go on hurting you. I leave you as you left me, as you left her. Marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet. Buried alive. Buried alive.’
And well, you all know Kirk’s reaction.
What simply amazes me about that film is that Ricardo and Shatner’s performances were totally filmed seperatly. Ricardo filmed all his stuff first then Bill did his stuff. Editing is a wonderful thing. Brillant performances all around.
Yeah, well, I thought about making it public, but eventually shied away from it, I really had no idea how the community would react to a public poll, if fewer people would vote …
oh yeah, I’d go with ya on that in a heartbeat. Yes, even V had some cool moments - actually, a lot of them, it just wasn’t enough to make up for the shitty ending and the lame bits in the bar.
off the top of my head: Kirk’s T-shirt, campfire singing, Scotty banging his head against the bulkhead, the steering wheel in the observation lounge, Sulu landing the shuttle, a navigator and a helmsman getting lost in the forest, GOD IN NEED OF SPACESHIP (I totally can understand him, though, if I were half-omnipotent, I’d wanna cruise around the universe in the Enterprise, too) … did I leave something out?
OK that’s fair, I guess. By the way if you start watching when you get to TNG give it 2 seasons. The first couple are pretty bad but it soon get’s really good. In fact that’s pretty good advice for DS9 as well. They both take a couple of seasons to find their feet. I can only imagine if either of them were started today they wouldn’t last half a season.
VI was a great bridge from the old generation to the new, much better than the actual “Generations” movie. (Although, as expressed by others, I have a fondness for that one. The writers obviously were more used to writing television episodes than movies, so it wasn’t great like it could have been, but it had some nice moments. To this day, I wish they’d have shown Guinan standing behind the bar looking out the broken windows of Ten-Forward when the saucer section came to a stop.)
Yeah, what he said! Welcome aboard, DocP! Let us know what you think as you work your way through. It’ll be great to hear fresh, new reactions.
I agree with all those moments, even though V was the weakest of the original series movies. I remember being really disappointed after seeing it, because during production, my family and I were living in a small town called Ridgecrest in the Mojave desert, and we got all excited because we found out they were shooting the God’s Planet sequences nearby. The cast stayed in a local hotel, and a guy we knew from church worked there and showed us the crew pin they’d given to the staff of the hotel. We took a drive around one weekend hoping to see something, and we parked next to a pickup truck with a strange, bare, white tree in the back. When we finally saw the movie, there was the white tree in the first few seconds, right before Sybok appears walking through the desert!
Outside of a convention, that was my closest encounter with the world of Star Trek off the big or little screen.
DocP, you’re in good company. I’ve shelled out for all seven seasons of TNG, all seven of DS9, all seven of Voyager, two of BSG, Firefly and (thanks to you, EmilyfromOhio) season one of Lost. Best money I ever spent. Welcome!
Sadly, I’ll have to agree. But on the other hand, maybe not! Just imagine: good Trek - today? Wouldn’t people just DIG it? I mean, even the only modestly entertaining first two seasons of TNG/DS9 had some great episodes (Duet, Sherlock Data Holmes, and 11001001 among others) and all in all, both - even in their early stages - were better than Enterprise!
Wow. You lived near God!
hm … I gues I’ll have to check out Lost, too, after all … hm…
Well so far I’m enjoying the next generation the most, and on my corridor its become a bit of a activity, sitting down to watch star trek. Picard is just a brilliant captain but Data is my favorite character, he has some of the best comedy and most touching scenes in the series. I’ve never been closer to crying at a tv show than at the end of “The most Toys,” where Data gets captured by a collector and at the end he faces the man in prison and the collector asks him if he’s happy about destroying his empire and Data just replies that it brought him no pleasure, because he’s just an android. (It was sadder than it sounds)
I also love Q, he should be in more episodes.
see, that’s the magic of Trek! I wish I could be there and just take a seat and watch it with y’all instead of studying for my finals …
Picard is just a brilliant captain but Data is my favorite character
hm… Data sure is cool … but Picard is at least as awesome as Data … I’m thinking of his speech in “The Drumhead” right now…
I’ve never been closer to crying at a tv show than at the end of “The most Toys,”
wow. yeah, Trek can be very emotional at times… I had a similar moment when I saw Nemesis in the theater, after the exposition, the first time they show the Enterprise flying by and the kind of re-used the music from STTMP, that was deeply, deeply moving for someone who … hell, I’m 23, I’ve been a Trek fan since I was 6, so that’s like three quarters of my life…
EDIT: I found this video, the scene I’m referring to is the first scene in the video. I still love it. It’s so graceful, with a touch of sadness, of autumn, of melancholy…
I also love Q, he should be in more episodes.
Q is a great dude. And his best episodes are in TNG, didn’t like him all that much in DS9/Voyager.
It did wonders for property values, but the smoke and thunder did tend to keep one up at nights.
