Who is in the picture in the pilots' briefing room?

Hi there,

This may be common knowledge but has anyone else noticed that next to the exit in the pilots’ briefing room there is an old picture of someone (with his back to the artist) which the pilots touch on their way in and out of the room - it seems like a mark of respect - even Adama did it in one episode.

Unless I missed it I don’t think it’s ever been explained who this is. As with lots of seemingly unexplained trivial things in BSG I am sure it has / will have some kind of significance…

Any ideas / theories anyone?

BB

It’s the “Lest we forget” picture. It’s a photo that was taken during the initial attacks on Caprica of a soldier on his knees as the city burns in front of him. Roslin was given a copy shortly after the attacks. It is considered something of great respect. I’m such a Battlestar nerd that I hung a copy next to the doorway to my computer room.

Do you have a higher res copy? I’d love to put that next to the door of my office.

This is the best I could find.

FINALLY! I’ve been wanting to know what that photo meant since I started watching the show.

Thank you!

THANKS for posting the picture!

BB, regarding your question, it’s an iconic picture of the Cylon invasion. The soldier looks on while Caprica burns. The pilots touch/make a reverent gesture right before they leave the room. In our real-world context, it’s like the Iwo-Jima picture (soldiers pulling up the US flag?) in WWII or maybe the burning WTC picture on 9/11.

Excellent. Thanks!

I found a higher-res version of the photo on the Galactica Wiki:

Yeah thats the one I posted just above. It might appear smaller in the thread but if you download it, its the same size.

Okay, here is another question: (SET DECORATION SPOILER FOR “RAZOR” IF YOU CARE!):

The Pegasus crew has a similar picture, we see in one scene. Anybody know what it is a picture of? I didn’t get a close look, but it seems somehow more belligerent than the Lest We Forget photo from Galactica.

What episode/scene was this one shown in?

A whole lot of them, especially first season. When you see the pilots walking into the ready room and they reach up and tap the picture hung high and to the right of the door, this is the picture.

It shows up as early as “33.” At some point, the photo moves to Roslin’s office aboard Colonial One, so look for it there in Season 2 on – except, of course, when Baltar is occupying the office!

Yeah yeah I knew that (thats why I posted the pic in the first place of this thread) but I was talking about the question…

… about the one on the Pegasus.

Oops. Sorry!

I think it was in
the montage after Cain declares war on the Cylons in her shipwide address. I don’t remember specifically, and it only shows up the once, but I am pretty sure it is there, in the Pegasus’ equivalent of Galactica’s wall of photos.
Anyone else out there remember this?

I just looked at the part you are talking about and there is a picture, but it is of something different than you thought. I would post a screen cap up here but Razor hasnt yet aired and I dont want to be accused of spoiler leakage or something.

No problem --as I said, I’ve only seen it once and that is just what it made me think of, especially since
the story of “Razor” was doubling the story of the mini at that point, with Cain’s speech to her crew being sort of a mirror image of Adama’s speech to his – so I was probably in the mood to see parallels where none, perhaps, were intended.
But, as Audra et al. would be the first to tell us, works of art often have effects and consequences far beyond what the artist(s) intended!
