The others may be better orchestral and whutever, but the Original Series theme always gets my blood pumping. There are so many fun memories associated with it as well. I remember my Dad running around the house with his arms out-stretched while mimicing the lady scream.
It may not be the best but it’s my favorite.
I prefer the TNG theme mainly as it is taken from ST The Motion Picture. That is my fave ST theme.
Voyager… DS9 theme, especially the second version grew on me. But Voyager theme and title sequence is amazing.
Like I said, I love the DS9 theme. It’s the one that I find myself humming as I’m walking down the street. And it just makes me smile (probably related to how much I love DS9).
Plus I like the harmonic structure, though I’ve mostly lost the musical vocabulary to describe it.
Also, Dennis McCarthy won the Emmy for “Outstanding Individual Achievement in Main Title Theme Music” for the theme to Deep Space Nine. Just saying
I’ve always loved the Voyager theme. It just appeals to my musical sensibilities, such as they are.
I vote DS9. It has a great sense of a wide open possibility. There’s just something grand about it that I really enjoy.
Second favorite is TOS, followed by TNG.
I had never heard the Enterprise theme before. Um… wtf? S popped her head in from the other room to say, “Are you listening to Bryan Adams?” It’s kind of awful! So for fans of Enterprise (I am not a non-fan, just haven’t watched it)–what are your thoughts on that song?
It is the butt of many jokes. The producers wanted to veer away from the classical versions of the past and get a more hip and upbeat theme. ahem It did not go over well. In the fourth season for the two-parter episode ‘In a Mirror, Darkly’ they wrote a new theme since the episode took place in the Mirror Universe. Of course, it was classical and wonderful. When I first watched that episode, I stood up and applauded.
You silly, Enterprise didn’t have an opening theme!
Also, there are four lights.
When I was watching Enterprise by about halfway through season 1 I usually had to mute the theme… because my partner would complain about it. It’s actually kinda hilarious, in retrospect.
LOVE the Enterprise Mirror Universe episodes… think they’re the best in all of the franchise
I sing it often. Makes me chuckle, especially when I really get into it. I’m all Michael Bolton anthem style.
So for fans of Enterprise (I am not a non-fan, just haven’t watched it)–what are your thoughts on that song?
As far as I know, I am the only person ON THE WHOLE INTERNET who loves it. My only compliant was after the first season or so, the song didn’t really fit with what the show had become, which was a much darker serious show.
They also changed it slightly in season 3 & 4 and made it sound a little lighter and faster. Because that was going to win the fans who hated it over. That and calling it “Star Trek: Enterprise”. sigh
And yeah, the Mirror Universe episode themes were great.
not sure I’d classify it as my “favorite”, but when Voyager debuted, the opening theme actually made me tear up. still does, on occasion
Yes, the theme itself is pretty bad. However, I once heard the extended version played as background music in a department store. Since then it commonly gets stuck in my head regularly, so I have a slight soft spot for it. OTOH, the opening visuals for the ENT are a perfect reflection of the mood they were striving for. Eventually, the musical theme did begin to work for me.
I do the same thing, usually with intent of pissing off Mrs. Phil. Actually did it in the past week when watching the opening of Game of Thrones which initiated a discussion of the best opening credit sequences of all time. HBO series have a pretty strong running on that front…
DS9 theme…fo’ sho!
The best part of the theme is that it comes in two versions: a slow stately composition reflecting a sleepy outpost on the edge of Federation space and a faster livelier version reflecting busy hub in a central strategic location that DS9 had become…
Just like Talos, the TOS theme is too engrained in my soul for it not to be my fav.
So it’s not a far fight.
But my second would probably be Voyager. But damn, the Enterprise theme got stuck in my head when that series aired. I’d hum it all day.
TNG seemed like a ripp off of the Star Trek Motion Picture theme, (cuz it was)
On a related note, a remember a guitar magazine from eons ago came up with the guitar tabs for the original Star Trek theme.
Anyone know where to find it online?

PS somehow, all that comes to mind right now is Audra doing that space battle theme in Star Trek

speaking of the Enterprise theme, before Enterprise came out, the ads for the show used “Wherever you will go” by The Calling.
So for me that’s the true theme song to Enterprise
