What is the purpose of Government anyways???

True but what Adama and Roslin are asking for is a leap of faith. and the civilians colonials, have already given up there liberties and its pretty much still gotten them no further then they were in episode one. So if it was you. Would you still trust the leaders that brought you there? Would you give them the benefit of the doubt? If you and your children were working night and day on a tilliam (sp?) ship? Personally if I’m taking on the perspective of the average Joe Colonial. I’d be done with them, and want someone else to lead. but thats right there not having elections anymore.

lucky them.

To be honest, if I were Juana Colonial, I would just have stayed on earth with D’Anna.

As Juana Colonial, I still wouldn’t be able to get over Zarek. I’m not sure I’d believe Adama and Roslin led us to a nuclear wasteland knowing it was a nuclear wasteland - I would probably give them the benefit of the doubt on that count. I would probably be looking for an alternate leader (probably no one we’ve seen, a pacifist), or immersing myself in drink or religion.

But religion also failed them. Drink it is!

I will give you this: as joe colonial, I would not trust EITHER side. I, for one, would be looking for fresh leadership with a new perspective. If I were Roslin or Adama, I’d be looking for a replacement (well, Roslin seems to already have tagged Lee for that role) but fast. They are, admittedly, tired and low in spirits and I doubt anyone would begrudge them a quick retirement.

In the real world I’m not so sure I would be eager to jump to the streets. Not so much out of cowardice or out of total loyalty to the government but out of concern for my own family. Perhaps I’m also biased in that I live in a nation where every four to eight years we have a popularly mandated bloodless coup, of sorts, and PEACEFULLY transfer power to a new (ostensibly) government.

I Don’t think I’ve ever heard a better description of democracy

What, one that boils down to “let’s get drunk and have a peaceful transfer of power?” heh heh. Thanks!

Hey, who can argue with that?

You know, I never answered the original question either: what is the purpose of government anyway? I think it’s to SERVE the people, not just protect them.

Before someone says that protecting the people is serving the people, I want to add that governments are supposed to “serve” there people in a great many ways.

I should also try to keep Adama out of this question I asked (and apologize for always coming back to him), because is he really part of the government? I know he governs the military, but isn’t the military a tool of the government and not a branch of it?
