What GWC Means To Me

I’m watching BBC’s Being Human for the first time right now. And Mitchell just had a monologue at the beginning of this episode… it’s so perfect for explaining what GWC is (at least to me, and I’m sure many others).

intriguing idea.

I vaguely recall a snippet from Neal Stephenson’s novel Cryptonomicon when one of the protagonists visits a “dungeons and dragons” convention to look up some friends and needs to explain the woman he is with that these people (convention folk) are his “demographic”. That image stuck with me.

To me, GWC seems to be like a big virtual bonfire on the beach. Some nights you finishing surfing and drop by to hear what songs are being sung, stories being told, ideas being kicked around and discussed. Or some times you just come by to be warmed.

GWC started as a place for me to unwind and be among friends and like-minded people. It’s become an extended family, a support group, a hangout, a sanctuary, a party, a place to share and discover new things…it’s become a part of me and I like to think Ive become a part of it. Honestly, I’m not sure how life would be without this place and people Im so blessed to have found…but it would be fewer boobs and more pants.

You guys are OSSIM…thanks for being a part of my life.

We all choose our tribe. I like that.

GWC is my tribe. It’s a rare thing to feel like you belong, that you are accepted for who you are. I found GWC during a very difficult time in my life. I was on iTunes late at night looking for BSG content to keep my mind off stuff and the GWC podcast was up at the top of the search list. It’s the only one I ever gave a second listen to. Some weeks it was the only thing I looked forward to. I can’t imagine my life without this community. Thank you for welcoming me in and putting up with my crazy shit and making me laugh. I hope I do the same for each and every one of you. I believe that we all have two families in our lives: The one we are born into, and the one we choose. You are the family I choose. My tribe. I’ll love you guys forever.

One-
A social connection for Geeks.
A place free of trolls and flame wars where Geeks can openly discuss and gush about all things Geek. Without fear of being chastised for their tastes in media, art, music etc. Where one can post without having to feel they need to justify or defend why they like what they like. Anime,Super Sentai, Science Fiction, B Movie Horror, Doctor Who, Asian Horror,Psychological Thrillers, Epic Fantasy, Manga, RPG’s, Tabletop Games, LARPing whatever it is you like… Come warm yourself by the fire, you are welcome here.

Two-
A support group for Geeks.
Having a bad day? Let it out, vent. You will feel better, and you will get kind comments and support from the community. Got a hobby you are proud of? Post about it, show pictures of your projects. Not only will you feel better about sharing but we all will benefit as well. Want to get in shape and need some support and encouragement? Look no further than the forums, GO WOLVERINES!

Three:
A creative outlet.
Photoshop contests, Fantasy Science Fiction League contests. Creative Writing Workshops, NanoWrimo support threads. You have a story just bursting to get out? Post it and get feedback. Filking lyrics? Post them. RPG threads, gaming threads. Want to write your own screenplays? Write them out and get feedback… Or if infinitely bored write your own feedback! (looking at you Talos… :D)

Four:
Geeks with Benefits. (no, not in that way(get your mind out of the gutter))
For those lucky enough you can meet these fine folks in real life and add another dimension to the relationship you formed here. Form bonds and create friendships with others that share your passions and interests. Fellowship, party and revel in your Geekdom.

A Hive Mind.
Have a problem you cannot solve? Place it at the altar of the Hive Mind. It will most likely be solved.

Bored watching shows by yourself? Join a frak party and watch it together. Be your own MST 3000 and Rocky Horror Picture Show together. Want even more? Join the Crue and Eff This Week on the Youstream, you don’t even have to wear pants.
