If I get to drive in this world, I’m joining the Car Acrobatic Team tomorrow!
(only 'cus Speed ain’t giving up the keys to the Mach 5 anytime soon)

Yeah, I saw this… and well… I think it’ll go down as a textbook example of film going too far to imitate the original source. It looks great, don’t get me wrong - but the dialogue and story concepts you’d forgive in animation just don’t fit for me…

I applaud their keeping it as true to the original as possible, but it just strikes me as too far.

Hope I’m wrong.

I hope you’re wrong too !! I’d love to have a Speed Racer movie I can bring my kids to, and also enjoy myself…I don’t know if this one is going to fill that bill, but I’ll keep hoping until I see it…it’s been waaaay too long to wait for someone reputable to produce a SR remake…imho.

just saw this yesterday. i remember seeing reruns of SR on cartoon network as a kid, never really got into it myself. not quite sure how i feel about the movie yet. i think it’ll either be a flop for me or just a cool racing movie. i’m not exactly expecting it to be my new favorite film of all time. then again, it is the wachowski brothers…

And that is the unknown variable in this equation.

I should have been too young to love Speed Racer, but he was a big part of my sixth year of life, in his VHS incarnation. This movie looks unspeakably bad. And the actor they have playing Speed… kind of sets of the alarm bells. He looks like a child molester. The cool fx didn’t drag me in- they turned me off : (

And they describe it as “car-fu”. It’s racing, which I’m a big fan of, and it looks absolutely wild. And it’s Speed Racer! What’s not to like?

I so can not wait to go see this!!!

I think it will be good even a “bad” wachowski bros. movie is equivalent to a good movie.

Ditto. I missed Speed Racer, so I can’t judge it based on comparisons with the original show, but it looks weird enough to check out. John Goodman playing another cartoon character in live action…

It’s not the Wachowski Bro’s anymore.
It’s the Wachowski siblings.

I saw a preview of this at “Alvin and the Chipmunks” (don’t ask) and while I was a HUGE Speed Racer fan as a kid, I’m not so sure this will work for me. I like the casting (John Goodman as Pops? Quite a range for the man who also voiced the Santa Claus Robot from “Futurama”), but I don’t see it as a serious drama.

It will be interesting, though, to see if the Wachowski brothers actually make an action film or if they give us another boring chat fest disguised as an action film (so not a fan of “V for Vendetta”).

Neither is Alan Moore, the author of the Graphic Novel. You might want to check it out.

I thought V for Vendetta (movie) was good more like V for Vendetta lite but good

Okay, I just watched a rerun on the Simpsons and Alan Moore was on it. He was a member of the League of Extraordinary Freelancers (with Dan Clowes and Art Spiegelman). Poor Milhouse was on the receiving end of an ass-kickin’, all because he asked Mr. Moore to sign his DVD copy of “The Watchmen Babies in V for Vacation”. I felt validated.

Saw the Speed Racer trailer again this morning. The kid hates it (too loud, she says), and I’m still on the fence. It looks too serious to be any, well, fun.

Matt Selman, one of the writers on that episode is now blogging over at Time’s Nerd World blog. This entry may be interesting.

not according to the wikipedia

Wow, I really don’t get out much to read. I enjoyed that, and read a few more entries just for fun. Thanks, Pike!

As often happens, I’m late on this thread. I was a huge Speed Racer fan as a kid and had a HUGE crush on Speed. In fact, I hated Trixie. I hated Trixie so much that when my husband feels like being a pill he says, “I always thought Trixie was hot.”

I watched the trailer and do worry a bit that too much might be going on in the film. But the moment I saw Trixie, I hated her, so I’d like to think that’s a good sign.
