Twilight Series Books

Jarathen, just a heads up, but a lot of us women here at GWC aren’t particularly weird, nor do we subscribe to essentialist descriptions of what a particular gender “is” or “wants”.

I had to get that out as it seems to have dominated the discussion of this thread recently.

My church school students love Twilight, which makes me happy insofar as they are reading books (reading books! good!). With one (rabid fan) exception, though, most of them wouldn’t recommend that I read it. And this is coming from both boys and girls.

OK, try and read what you wrote from the perspective of a guy who is mystified why behavior that is literally illegal is so attractive.

LOL I’ll admit that I too don’t understand the “liking bad boys” or girls, for that matter, thing. But I’ll just chalk it up to personal preference and go my merry way…

I want to be clear that I’m not trying to disparage the books (like casilda said, they have encouraged lots of people to read, which is wonderful!) or throw all women into the same chest and kick them into the ocean as “weird” or “crazy.” I’ve just seen the Twilight Virus spread all over the place at work and heard so many daydream sighs that it seems that most women I’ve met who have read Twilight not only love the book, but specifically the romance as it is portrayed in the books, a romance which I cannot understand despite my greatest efforts.

I really don’t want to derail the thread so I’ll just say I’m glad people are picking up books and reading them. I feel like JK Rowling did a great deal of good for an entire generation of children, and Stephenie Meyer is helping out as well with young girls also. I love movies, television, and video games, but none of them can tell a story the way a book can, and I hope new readers take a book like Twilight as their first step into a larger world and not just a one-off.

I kind of hate it when people refer to Edward as a “stalker”. Mopey? Yes. Dangerous? Yes. But he’s not stalking Bella with the intent of seeing her naked or hurting her in some way. For gods sake the guy won’t sleep with her until they are married!! He literally leaves the country against her wishes in order to protect her. I’d say if anyone in the books has an unhealthy obsession it’s Bella herself. And the bad boy thing - Edward is not the bad boy of his own kind -vampires- he’s actually the boy scout who refuses to eat people because it’s wrong.

Yes some women are attracted to bad boys… and vampires are certainly the ultimate idea of a bad boy…and I don’t really know why.

Got bullied/bribed/brow beaten into giving it another shot, will say, while I get the bad boy/girl thing I mean, some of us , (raises hand sheepishly) tend to go for people. Who are.not the best for us.

But to my descent to maddness, I m In the second book. I figured out what’s bothering me, its not that its unoriginal, or the stalking aspect because that is a staple of the vampire arcatypes. It’s Bella, I’m at a point where she’s in her room where she’s. Waking up at night screaming cause her boyfriend left. For months like this. I’m hoping her character gets stronger.

Makes me miss Buffy.

okay so finished the second book, and well i’m not really attached to the characters i will admit the writing is well done, and i like the mythology she’s setting up… so well see about eclipse

Well I did it, yep all four books, so let me state for. the record that I have read a book, where a warewolf fell in love with baby… ill just let that speak for itself. But snark aside, it wasn’t all that bad I mean half way through I was cheering for that. Victoria chick to kill them all but the werewolf mythos was pretty cool with whole pack mentality. Still they occasionally fall in love with babies. (sorry ill stop with the pot shots) The writing is really very well done. Its downfall to me is that It’s main characters where just unteresting.

But its not as bad as I thought

I’m firmly on the side of team Victoria

Yes I was a alittle different myself. I was a fan of team Wolf in general with my fav being Lee and her brother. The baby thing was strange but she had to tie it off somehow… which is funny I never would have thought of doing it that way. Congrats on finishing all four homie!!!

Wow thought for sure you’d go with super hot homicidal. Chick

But I agree to me the best parts were the wolf pack stuff. I kind wish she would do a book about the wolves alone.

Congrats Boomer, on finishing up the series. How do you feel? For me it was like binging on candy (Snickers!): it felt good at the time but there was hell to pay later. I have so many issues with the characters, and the writing, and the pacing, and the romance, and . . . did I mention the characters? But Twilight is still brain crack.

The wolf portion of the books was my favorite section, too. The history of Jacob’s tribe was very well done, and if Meyer wanted to spin off a few books focusing on them I would snap them up in a heartbeat. I’d be consumed with terrible, terrible shame afterwards–but that’s my cross to bear.

I

Well here is the thing its compelling writing, but The characters are boring still I can’t look down my nose at those who like it cause it ain’t bad its just a talented writer telling a slightly above par or at times below par story I mean when there was a serious disscussion of how horny they were and how that effects imortal lives and skill sets I was like really. I’m reading this garbage, but than I was you go Seth and leah… so for those to polite to comment my brand new vag is growing quite nicely. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyone looking forward to reading ‘The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner’?

I know that I’ll read it eventually, but I don’t think that I feel the need haunt the closest Barnes & Noble to get the book. I’ll probably wait and borrow it from the library.

I am curious to read the rest of Midnight Sun, I read the draft released on the internet and I’m the kind of reader who can’t stand not finishing a story. I understand Meyer’s frustration over the book being released without her permission, but it’s frustrating that she won’t even speculate on when she might finish the novel.
