I wish the retro light cycle had a bigger part.
Tron on his averagecycle, Quorra on the lightbuggy thing, Flynn on the retrocycle in fast and the furious style race to exit portal.
Then Clu comes in on his lightplane thing, only to be taken on by older flynn as he comes in in the bigger plane from above all millienium falcon han solo like.
Then daft punk somehow save the day
but I suppose it was cool enough already…
I went to see it at the Imax in London and I was rather blown away!
As a fan of the original I was a little worried, especially with all the hype surrounding it but I was very pleasantly surprised especially because they got a pretty decent story out of it as well as the nerdgasm-worthy visuals and music.
Oh and I’d also like to pay special tribute to Gem’s arse in 3D; truly a wonder to behold.
I just saw it again last night and saw something I missed the first time. During their time on CLU’s carrier, there’s a second where they zoom in on a random conscript, and it looks a bit like Gem’s chin underneath the face shield. They show it for about 2 seconds, and it seems to be just a little too unnecessary to not be a clue or a hint to something. I know she was supposed to have been blown up in the End of Line club, but there was some unaccounted for time between CLU leaving and the explosion. Of course, I could just be in denial and don’t want to accept that such a fine piece of programming as Gem was killed;)
If your data is on the disc and you were about to die…couldn’t you like throw your disc before you die?
I’m also wondering if that’s why Kevin traded discs with Quorra before they got to the portal, and if Kevin is on the little memory stick looking thing Sam downloaded data to and put around his neck. Did Sam intend to take back the company in order to research a way to bring back his dad?
Though I don’t share in the general fascination with Gem’s physique, I have a thought on your musing.
Someone (I’ve only seen the film once, don’t remember who, prolly Flynn Sr.) said that CLU didn’t have the ability to create programs, just to repurpose them. So it would make sense that Gem, and every other program that was destroyed/killed/disappeared, would be repurposed into his soldier corps. That said, I’m not sure what to make of the giant explosion/tabula rasa -ish move when Flynn Jr and Quorra went through the portal, so they may all be gone, anyways? (though I’m hoping not)
