Traveling to London

I and my girl-friend are going to London for a week this month. So I am starting a thread for suggestions for this to see, and when we get back, reviews of what we saw.

This is my first and her second time, so we will see all the big museums, and eat a lot of Indian food.

So, warm up your passports and let’s chat!

Since I’m a cheeky chappie by birth, I’ll give you some recommendations when I have the time after work

British Museum, Science Museum, V&A Museum, Museum of Natural History, Tate Modern/South Bank, Highgate Cemetary, National portrait Gallery, Tussauds, Plague tour, Ripper tour, Greenwich Park & Observatory, Camden Market (which I personally avoid, but is worth seeing once) See a show (The Mousetrap, The 39 Steps or wicked, depending on your taste for drama, comedy or Musical).

Of course - Let us know your interests and we might be able to tailor it a bit better.

Obviosuly you have the shops (Oxford Street,)
The museum’s as mentioned in the above
London Zoo
The shows are good and you’re near the centre of the west end so you’ll have a manner of places to go to (Chinatown, leicester square)
Maybe look to see if you can hit some of the expensive resturants (http://www.gordonramsay.com/index2.html), (http://www.jamieoliver.com/fifteen-london/book-a-table) - for example

It’s kinda hard as I’m kinda removed as I haven’t lived there for a while, but I do know that what ever your interest - you will find it.

You have the london eye, you have the tube.

In North London, you have Highgate and the fashionable areas
West London is generally the posh end with Kensington and Chelsea

Take a river boat ride and see the Houses of Parliment.
Go to a sunday market.

I think you will enjoy yourself.

A couple of places I recommend:

The Forbidden Planet Megastore for all kinds of geeky goodness.

The Wallace Collection for fine art and arms and armour!

Avoid the Aquarium, it’s a bit rubbish.

Forbidden Planet - I remember there - many a coin has been spent in there.

If you guys like Dr. Who, there’s a Dr. Who museum of some sort. I have no idea where, but it was featured on the Nerdist TV pilot.

The Tower of London is worth a look as well. I remember the Maritime Museum being good as well. But it’s been a long time since I’ve been in London, at least 15 years.

History. We are both history geeks. Less what happened when, but more how did they do this in…

We are both in the Society for Creative Anachronism, which is pre 1600.

Though the Forbidden Planet thing looks cool.

Oh, and will American beer taste like diabetic moose piss when I get back?

I’m stealing that. And the only way to retain is to use it.

Honey, this tea tastes like diabetic moose piss.
Sir, your cologne smells like diabetic moose piss.
Excuse miss, step back. Your breathe smells like diabetic moose piss.
Your cab reeks of diabetic moose piss.
Grandma, the bathroom smells like diabetic moose piss. (I ALWAYS take it too far.)

Oh, there is a lot of History in London, I doubt you would get bored with the history that the UK offers.

I think, grammar wise, it is best spelled “diabetic-moose” piss. The moose is diabetic, not the piss.

As others has suggested, The British Museum is a must. So many amazing artefacts that we have stol… acquired from around the world. Plus it’s free to get in, although a donation is asked for.

The Tower of London and Windsor Castle are also popular tourist spots, although they will cost you, and Windsor Castle isn’t in the city, so you’d be best putting aside most of a day for a visit there.

I have visited most of the museums and castles in the last 5-10 years and even posted of my exploits here, if you’re interested in hearing it firsthand from a fellow history geek. And yes, that website is a historic relic in itself, heh.

Hope you enjoy your trip, and if you have any questions ask away, I’ve not lived in the capital for a few years but I might be able to help out.

So far London is AWESOME!

Pictures - my good man :)…

How long you got to go?

We’ll be back Sunday and pictures will dribble in that week.

Sadly, my girl-friend’s wallet was picked in the British Museum. :frowning:

Ach, sorry to hear that, hope she didn’t lose too much.

Glad you’re having fun though, and you’ve caught some decent weather too!

She lost sixty pounds, but we got the wallet and ID cards back!

We packed for cold and rainy, but we aren’t complaining!

Back from London. Had a great time. More later.
