Torri Higginson as the new Ripley

hey,

I just had this brainwave : in the event that the movie industry were to continue with another Alien movie; I’d reckon Torri Higginson should carry the mantle of Ripley. She does remind one of Sigourney Weaver, somewhat…

Geez Im terrible with names! Took me a while before I remembered who Torri Higginson was, doh! I agree tho, she does remind me of Ms. Weaver. I wouldnt want them to remake that movie as theres nothing wrong with it. Not to say I would mind a new Alien flick with a new heroine.

I don’t think she has the presence Weaver had. She could pull it off, but I don’t really see it.

Aye, miLordCorbin, but would you mind an Alien prequel? Because Ridley Scott’s already talking about it…

I just looked it up, and even though Higginson is 20 years younger than Weaver, Higginson will turn 40 this year. Now, I’m personally not saying she is too old, but she is by Hollywood’s standards. If they do a prequel with the Ripley character, I doubt they’ll use Higginson. More likely, they’ll have Weaver doing voice-over narration or cameo (like talking with a reporter or whatever). If they do a sequel, who knows?

She would probably be better as Ripley than she was in Stargate! She was the wet blanket of the cast. I am sure she is a better actress than that part let her be.

I think they should pull a BSG-type switch and make Ripley a man…just to mess with everyone.

AWWW why’d you go and spoil it. I was just getting happy.

She did an episode of SGA where she played herself VERY OLD, and it was a stunning, heart-wrenching job of acting. She definitely has the chops to pull off a Ripley, and she doesn’t look her age.

Im ambivalent about a prequel. Ridley Scott is back so thats a big pro, but prequels are always shite so thats a con. If the main character is Ripley, somehow, then I think thats a con. An Alien film that has a ‘human focus’? Im not even sure how much more anthropocentric you could get, I mean the movies have always been about human beings facing terrifying ‘others’. Hope it doesnt suck. fingers crossed

A prequel would probably have to tell the story of how Weyland-Yutani learned about LV-429, decoded the signal, and decided to sacrifice the Nostromo’s crew.

Actually, a story about a group of bastards being a group of bastards could be pretty entertaining.

Didn’t AvP kind of tell the story of how Weyland’s founder first discovered the Aliens? I’m not sure how a movie about a bunch of unlikeable, pencil-pushing bastards debating the sacrifice of their workers would be interesting, but I guess anything’s possible.

Here’s what I think made the first movie so damn unique: They weren’t looking for trouble. It wasn’t about a bunch of bad-ass characters assembling for a quest that you know is going to be their doom. They were normal folk, annoying at times but competent at their jobs, not necessarily “the best and the brightest” that you typically see brought together for these kinds of stories. They weren’t off on a mission fraught with danger and mystery to find some strange and powerful artifact.

They were on their way home.

They’d been “on the road” for a long time and just wanted to tuck into their own beds with their sweethearts beside them. The encounter that got them into trouble was a detour. No one wanted to do it, but they felt compelled by company rules (and the underhanded machinations of Ash) to check things out. It went downhill from there, and we felt for them because their original goal–getting home–was slowly and inevitably thwarted. If they had just been there to pick up some alien macguffin, their losing struggle wouldn’t have been nearly as poignant, tragic, or terrifying.

I don’t really need to see the behind-the-scenes story of the suits who sent the crew of the Nostromo to their deaths, because I’ve already seen the most compelling part of the tale.
